Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:11

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

I know it's probably fine germwise, but I just couldn't enjoy a meal knowing a dog had slobbered all over the plate. Gross.
It's also not behaviour I'd want to encourage by the dog, human food is not for them.

Mothership4two · 21/04/2025 16:34

I have face flannels and 'the rest of my bits' flannels. The washing machine will clean them and kill any bacteria. I am never going to mix them up though. We all have our personal icks.

It’s really grim. The thing is, people with dogs just don’t see what those of us without dogs see. When I look at your dog all I see is dirt, slobber and hair. When you look at your dog you see cute little furry member of the family.

The dishwasher will most likely kill any doggy germs but I don’t want to see your dog licking the dishes I’m expected to eat from.

Just apologise, swear blind you’ll never let dog do it again and just let your dog lick the dishes when you don’t have guests.

This ⬆️

Vile 🤢

Lampzade · 21/04/2025 16:35

I think that is grim tbh.

Do you not trust your washing machine to actually clean?

This thread is so funny. Who knew this issue was so polarising? Maybe it's one of those generational things so if your parents did it you wouldn't think twice about doing it yourself? And so it passes on down the line.

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 16:36

It's irrelevant whether it's dangerous or not - it's utterly disgusting. You may as well pick your nose, wipe it on the plate and say it's OK because it's going in the dishwasher. Or wipe the floor with a face flannel before washing it on high temp.

Do whatever gross things you like in private, but spare your poor guests.

You are right.
I grew up with dogs and the doggy "pre-wash". My dog does a great job of getting rid of the burnt on stuff.

Mothership4two · 21/04/2025 16:37

@ScarlettOYara and @JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn a lot of dog owners on here (me included) have said they don't let their dogs do it and find the thought of it revolting.

constantcycle · 21/04/2025 16:37

Wouldn't bother me; do people not understand what a dishwasher is for? Can't see how it's much worse than the human saliva on cutlery which all goes in just the same.

We don't have a dog, but we do have a cat! His bowls go in the dishwasher with everything else.

AngieBlack · 21/04/2025 16:37

Massive dog lover. Also a dog owner.

But that is fucking disgusting.

I don’t worry much about germs but I definitely wouldn’t want to eat in your house again if I saw the dogs licking the plates. It would turn my stomach.
And are you absolutely sure it’s completely safe. I googled and got suggestions that it wasn’t.

I guess they are talking about low temperature cycles, because salmonella is killed at about 60C.

We expect dishwashers to cope with utensils used with raw chicken.

Isobel201 · 21/04/2025 16:38

I've survived using plates that have been licked clean by dogs and then washed up or put in the dishwasher. No drama, and absolutely no risk.

VirgosNeedGoals · 21/04/2025 16:38

Absolutely disgusting

Do your humans eat shit with their cutlery and lick their bums with their saliva?

gamerchick · 21/04/2025 16:38

It's gross and installs bad manners in your dogs.

But then, we knew a couple who used to.let the dogs lick the plates and just put them back in the cupboard. Dogs tongues are hygienic apparently.

I never eat at other people's houses.

Flowers1985 · 21/04/2025 16:39

Yuk. I wouldn't eat at yours if I knew that

MyLimeZebra · 21/04/2025 16:39

I can’t believe how many people think this is so disgusting 😂 as long as it’s washed who cares!

ClaredeBear · 21/04/2025 16:39

We do it but not do this in front of guests as I know people could be uncomfortable with it. Let me be clear that this is only for dishes that go into the dishwasher. I can 100% understand why people wouldn’t be ok with this but I have faith in my dishwasher. If I were your DIL and I saw something disgusting going on that might impact my children, I would wait and tell my husband on the way home, not have it out then and there.

Gloriia · 21/04/2025 16:33

'I don’t know whether people are going to admit that though'

Well the plate licking dog owners on here don't seem to think there's anything wrong with it so surely they'd happily share with guests?

I don’t think it’s the fact that people don’t think there’s anything wrong with it per se, it’s just perhaps one of those things that whilst your ok with it, others might not be. Like a lot of things in life we might shield from friends and family. Off topic, and not comparable with the dog thing, but I love trashy reality TV. I have a couple of friends who I know would probably be horrified that I am a fan of MAFS and Love Island, so I don’t share with them that I watch it. You’re usually sufficiently self aware as to know what you can and can’t share with people, which is why I’m surprised OP would have shared this with anyone outside of the people she lives with.

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 16:40

Well, this thread has certainly sorted the primitives from the civilised! 😅

MrsMitford3 · 21/04/2025 16:40

I think your DIL reaction was wildly over the top.

My dog does attempt to board the dishwasher to inspect/lick the plates but we don't line the plates up for her.
(Except when it is dippy egg and soldier and then she gets to like the plate)

Children are much healthier who grow up in houses with dogs-

here is an AI overview of googling the query:

Yes, raising children in a home with dogs can offer several health benefits, particularly in strengthening the immune system and reducing the risk of allergies and asthma. Studies suggest that early exposure to dogs can lead to a more robust immune system, potentially protecting children from various illnesses. Additionally, dogs can provide emotional and social support, leading to improved mental health and well-being.

HelenWheels · 21/04/2025 16:40

i believe most dog owners do that

YourLoyalPlumOP · 21/04/2025 16:40

Huge pet hate of mine

its gross and I wouldn’t ever eat off a plate that I knew if.

don’t like that at all
