Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

Dog always licks our plates

I think this sums it up for me.

I have the same visceral reaction when I think about both.

So to any of those dog licking disgusting defenders, would you (or heaven forbid, do you), clean your toilet brush in your dishwasher?

Why it is different?

because the hot water wrecks the plastic bristles of course!

Caerulea · 21/04/2025 16:18

Nothing wrong with this & ppl are being a bit silly about it imo. If you're happy to let a dishwasher clean raw chicken/seafood off of things then dog lick is really no problem at all. What exactly do you think is going to happen?

When you have a colonoscopy, that camera has been up someone else's bum.

I can't get worked up about dogs licking plates.

I think they give it a quick wipe with a wet wipe between patients though !

I dont have a dog but tbh I can't see a big issue. The stuff is being washed well afterwards. Is it any worse than grimy toddlers lucking plates and if do why?

Only if grimy toddlers stick their face in every mound of dog shit they come across when out and about.

My dp's dog gets to lick every plate clean after every meal. It also climbs into the dishwasher as it's being loaded to lick everything in there. Because of this it now thinks that everyone's food belongs to it - while it's on a human's plate it's the dog's food, just that the dog hasn't got it yet. So said dog will snatch food out of the hands of children and adults, or off your plate, and doesn't respond to being told no. It now gets hut out of the dining room while the humans eat, but barks and scratches at the the door. It's a fucking nightmare, so even if you overlook the hygiene aspect, it's not a good idea.

This is the same dog that goes out into the garden and eats it's own shit, as well as any other it can find - whether that's cat, fox or any other animal's. Then it comes in the house and licks your plates, the work surfaces, the dining table. If you can't tell, I hate it.

Nah, a quick run under the tap 😂

Jackrussellsaremad · 21/04/2025 16:20

It's the same sort of thing as if the dog licks a perfectly good block of butter. Just scrape it off with a knife (if you've noticed the lick marks) and crack on.

That sort of thing doesn't bother me in the slightest. But a flushing loo within 2 metres of a toothbrush absolutely revolts me. There's just no accounting for some people's contrary views!

Gloriia · 21/04/2025 16:20

Those that let dogs lick plates please do inform any guests you may have prior to any gatherings involving food and drink.

I guarantee you'll see a massive drop off from those accepting invitations 🤮..

I thought it was a spit and polish 😅

Heronwatcher · 21/04/2025 16:21

I think it’s one of those things where everyone probably knows it happens but you don’t do it in front of guests. Like having sex, or picking your nose.

It probably would turn my stomach even though I also know a dishwasher would kill germs.

They slowly and gradually turn into a dog.

Maybe thr surgeon just has his pet dog on standby..

Livelovebehappy · 21/04/2025 16:21

Absolutely no problem imo. But you’ve made a mistake posting this on MN. MNetters love an excuse to froth at the mouth over dogs even existing, so I predict they will be pouring onto this thread in joyful anticipationto say it’s disgusting, and that you deserve to be excommunicated by all your friends and family, to live in purgatory forever, and that there’s a special place in hell for you….😄

Oh no no no. That butter would be in the bin so fast. I’ve caught the cats trying to steal a chicken wing before. Bin. No reward of getting it either.

Umbilicat · 21/04/2025 16:22

No one surely puts their toilet brush in the dishwasher? That's got to be urban myth. I do remember the thread on here about washing muddy potatoes in the dishwasher

Yes, especially if they can't get a clear picture. Pull it out, spit n polish, and try again.

tezzz · 21/04/2025 16:22

Sorry OP but that’s disgusting, I would not eat/ or let my kids eat using your plates & cutlery. You are probably correct that the dishwasher would kill germs but that’s still gross 🤮

That’s just leads me back to the whole how does a blind person know they are finished wiping and someone went that’s what the dogs for… 😬

Puttinginthemiles · 21/04/2025 16:23

Arniesaxe · 21/04/2025 16:17

Wouldn't bother me either. Dog saliva isn't harmful to humans.

I suppose if you don't mind the - albeit small - risk of worms or capnocytophaga canimorsus..

This thread has made me laugh.

We have a cat, and he will always try and get in amongst whatever we're eating - there are certain things I am happy for him to lick the plates after (he's thrilled we're into Greek yoghurt/granola season for breakfast, and he loves scrambled eggs) but even I draw the line at doing this with company around. My mother hates cats in general and would be beyond horrified to see him licking a plate.

He has his own dishes which get rinsed and go in the dishwasher along with everything else, perhaps our standards are particularly low.

My dd used to always take a glass of water up to bed with her. She switched to a water bottle after the time she woke up to find her cat helping himself to a drink. She couldn’t help wondering how many other times they had shared.

Apparently, there is a recipe for salmon that involves "cooking" it in the dishwasher.

2107emc · 21/04/2025 16:23

YANBU: I let the dog lick the plates here too. And drink the dregs of my tea 😂But yeah, I probably would pretend to be more civilized in front of guests.

Marieb19 · 21/04/2025 16:23

Why not scrape left overs into the dogs bowl. It is pretty gross.

OneNeatLimeCritic · 21/04/2025 16:24

Filthy. I wouldn't eat at your home.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 21/04/2025 16:24

Keirawr · 21/04/2025 15:35

Same people who have their dogs get into their beds. Gross doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Oh yes, I can't stand the whole animals-in-bed thing. Animals are dirty. The thought of their germy paws and bumholes etc in human bedding is 🤢. I knew someone who was very good with their dog and he was trained that he could not go past the turn in their staircase. He would lie on the wide steps at the turn, but he simply was not allowed upstairs, and I think that was a very good standard.
