Why do people laugh when they see me?

This has happened so many times, with a number of different people. I just say hello and people laugh in response. I don't get it. Or I'll offer someone a cup of tea and they laugh before they answer. WTF is this all about?

Because they are happy to see you?

TalkToTheHand123 · 20/04/2025 22:28

I'm laughing and I haven't even seen you.

I have a college with a nervous/tic laugh.

She sounds like a goat. “Baaaaaaaa!”

I like goats. It’s all fine.

It’s probably something similar.

That's lovely

Are you a professional clown/jester? If so, these people are offering a positive review of your efforts. Ask them to leave a Google review.

Otherwise, no idea!

Sunsweetsandandicecream · 20/04/2025 23:07

I think it is a nervous thing with some people. Dh can do this, even when talking about serious things with strangers, like a health professional; he genuinely cannot help it. I can only think it is awkwardness, but to the other person it can come off inappropriately timed I think. I have also noticed other people doing this, I do think it can be an anxious thing with new people.

Are you talking about new people op, or people that you know well?

OriginalUsername2 · 20/04/2025 23:10

How strange! Maybe take a video of yourself saying hello in the way you would usually and see what could be so funny.

Ribrabrob · 20/04/2025 23:14

This happens to me too! But usually more so with people that I don’t know. I too have a very high pitched childish voice so I think it probably is that.

AndrinaAdamosballetshoes · 20/04/2025 23:15

Next time it happens ask them what’s funny? Or why are you laughing? Put them on the spot, either they will tell you why or it might make them think twice about laughing again, people don’t like being challenged and their behaviour being questioned.

I can see why a high pitched voice on a man might make someone giggle or a woman with the voice of Barry White but a woman with a high pitched voice is hardly unusual or side splitingly funny.

PeriPeriMam · 20/04/2025 23:24

Are you wearing giant red clown shoes?

TalkToTheHand123 · 20/04/2025 23:24

GieYerselPeace · 20/04/2025 22:38

WHY?? Grin

Because you are asking strangers without any useful information.

Do you have a learning issue? Some people are cruel and laugh at this.

BrillantBriony · 20/04/2025 23:25

Mirror their behaviour. Laugh when they say hello to you, and if they ask you if you’d like a cup or tea chuckle before you respond.

Crazybaby123 · 20/04/2025 23:25

You said your voice is high pitched. Is it one of those voices that sound like a little girl? Why don't you test it out with a deeper voice on a few people and see if they have a different reaction?
Then if it works you could get voice coaching, like Margeret Thatcher??!

Would you be able to ask someone close? Maybe they’d be able to give you honest feedback. It’s a very odd thing to happen.

Totally unrelated to the topic at hand, but I love the username! I’ve got his GNX album playing on repeat every time I get in my car. Completely obsessed!

LadyQuackBeth · 21/04/2025 08:44

I don't think people can be laughing at you, not people you are close to and are offering tea. At a push, if you were the only British person there, maybe offering tea all the time would elicit a chuckle.

Either you also do a bit of a chuckle when you start to speak, lots of quite empathetic people unconsciously mimic the person they are talking to, or it's just something they do and you're overthinking it.

Hathall · 21/04/2025 08:47

Maybe you just have an aura that brings out joy and laughter in people.
