to think Ebay should feck off with their stupid new fees?

Portakalkedi · 20/04/2025 16:45

I had to give up with Vinted last year when they stopped allowing my chosen postage option of Royal Mail collected from my home. I am disabled, live rurally miles from the nearest town, and going to any dropoff points would mean time, effort, petrol and parking costs, so not viable. So I moved back to Ebay - just decluttering, not a business.
They trumpeted 'free to sell' but then started adding fees at the buyers' end (copied from Vinted). Great for the seller you might think, but it means 15-20% increase in prices for the buyer, so you have to reduce prices to be competitive.
I listed a bundle of items and had a buyer ask to buy three of them. I agreed and said I would relist these at xx and if she made an offer for the listing price I would accept. Well, what a fecking pantomime followed this. I had her offer, lower than the xx we had agreed. She said she DID offer xx, but of course ebay deducted fees from that so the amount that was in the offer was lower for me. We were both confused and at cross purposes, until I worked out that ebay had added fees to the xx I listed at, which she then saw as higher than what I'd told her, etc etc.
Fecking ebay - I cannot understand the sheer greed of a multibillion dollar company and why they can't just add a simple fixed fee per item, if even that is needed given the tons of ads shoved in your face on every page. What absolute grabbing bastards. They have also just implemented the same delivery system as Vinted, eg where they profit from it, Royal Mail collection from home NOT included, so will not be able to list there anymore. I cannot get my head round it, both the sickening greed. and their not taking into account that there are many people who do not live in a town centre, or may be disabled, not have transport, or otherwise unable to use the many crappy dropoff delivery companies (evri, yodel etc, clearly giving a huge bung to ebay for this).

i find the fee structure very transparent and clear and reasonable personally

but hey ho

Portakalkedi · 20/04/2025 16:49

Reasonable that prices to buyers have increased 15-20%, meaning sellers have to put their prices down?

OP posts:
HouseAshamed · 20/04/2025 16:49

I can't be arsed with it any more.

Portakalkedi · 20/04/2025 16:51

that's how I'm feeling, and maybe the rest of my stuff will be going to the charity shop

OP posts:
Potsofpetals · 20/04/2025 16:52

You haven’t had to put your prices down. There is no FVF and you can still chose your own postage setup

Darkclothes · 20/04/2025 17:00

You could try market place, olio, next door etc. I've never used vinted and only sold a few things on ebay years ago, so can't compare. I just found the time and effort wasn't worth it for a few £'s.

I've cleared out things recently and they will all be going to charity.

Tomikka · 20/04/2025 17:28

For postage choose ‘custom postage’ then you can select your own carrier and the specific size etc
You may need to select ‘view all delivery services’ to see the full selection and ‘package size’, ‘view all package dimensions’

When you are creating a listing the price you put will have the extra fees shown in some views, but failing that when you list the inclusive price will be shown

If you are sent an offer via the eBay process then you would receive the amount shown, eg in the attached screenshots the buyer would have offered £3.99 but I received the offer message of £3.15 with 74p going to eBay

If the buyer communicates in messaging with an offer then it comes as plain text therefore if you both think you have agreed an amount which you list then eBay will add their fees inbetween

to think Ebay should feck off with their stupid new fees?

Don't bother. Give it to charity shop.

The buyer fee is 4% plus 75p

Item listed at £5, cost to buyer £5.92, almost 20%

What was the category?

this on eBay?

LePetitMaman · 20/04/2025 18:41

Omg I hate the new set up. Everything is £4.83, £17.94.

It all looks like they are overseas listings converting to GBP. After 20 years of eBay looking like that, I autopilot scroll past everything.

I want to buy/sell for £5.00, £20.00.

AlphaApple · 20/04/2025 18:50

If you are literally just decluttering then Facebook marketplace, buyer collects, cash on collection is the way to go!

I do hate eBay. Small, occasional sellers have been drowned out by drop shippers and AliExpress sellers.

StrawberryWater · 20/04/2025 18:58

I don't like the buyer protection fees. I don't want ebay to be Vinted. If I wanted to sell on Vinted I'd go to Vinted.

That said I don't mind eBay's new simple delivery system. I've had nothing get lost in the post since using it. Even when an item has got stuck at a sorting hub eBay have been able to step in. poke the delivery company, find it and send it on it's way again. The only thing I don't like is the limited weight categories. It goes from 2 to 15kg with nothing in between. Give us 3-5kg!

ReesesCupcake · 20/04/2025 19:05

Agree. It’s awful now!

And to have the nerve of advertising that they now have buyer protection is unbelievable- they always had buyer protection.

Of course sellers have to reduce their prices in order to compete now. It’s that or now everyone pays more - so only eBay win in this new set up.

Not to mention it’s full of Temu style Chinese junk these days.

Indeed, the buyer protection has always been there, previously paid for by the fees taken from sellers, and just as before they side with the buyer. They just seem to be copying Vinted in everything, which is pathetic. I wouldn't bother with it but as I said I can't use vinted anymore, and find FB marketplace very hit and miss, especially as I'm in a very rural area so the chance of anyone local buying my stuff is very small. Too many scammers otherwise. Charity it is then.

I'm sure the simple delivery system is fine if you live near or go past the dropoff points every day. There are many people who find them difficult to access, as I do, and the cost of using this would mean it's not worth bothering. They do not comprehend, same as vinted, that there are sellers who need packages to be collected from their home (or workplace). I have been using Royal Mail tracked 48 with Click and COllect, works great, no problems, full tracking, but sadly no longer available at either ebay or vinted. I realise the buyer is not bothered, as they want whatever is cheapest, and it is covered by the site/seller until it reaches them so doesn't matter if it's the truly dreadful Evri or Yodel etc.

So are you listing more than 300 a month to incur fees?
or are you in selling in of the small number of high value categories that do have a fee as per photo?

And to add insult to injury, don’t forget you are treated as a scammer as a seller now.

You don’t get your money until after you send the item and it is marked as received/so many days have elapsed.

Pretty insulting when you’ve had an account in good standing for many years.

I don’t like Vinted for the same reason - I wouldn’t expect John Lewis to send me my item and then get paid afterwards. By holding the money, they accrue interest on it too. It is all pure greed.

Not at all

private sellers aren’t subject to the Sales and Goods Act, which is precisely why retailers can take money before delivery.

DuckBushCityLimit · 21/04/2025 09:53

OP is talking about the new "buyer protection" fees, which as noted above are 4% plus 75p. That adds a significant percentage to the cost of low value items, way more than the old FVF of 10% plus 30p (which sellers could often reduce if they waited for the special offers). And they make everything a ridiculous odd number, which puts people off.

Ebay can claim it's still 'free to sell' all they like, but sellers have to reduce their prices to take the fees into account if they actually want to sell anything.

But why should people send items before they get their money? It is the concept of sending your possessions to a stranger without having received any payment that is fundamentally wrong. Of course their is no law to prevent this, that’s not what I am suggesting.

eBay has gone to the dogs. Their Trustpilot is 1.2/5 now.

They either need to employ some people with more dynamic thinking or they will die a death.

They cannot keep ignoring the general discontent at their treatment of private sellers.
