To say that my hobby is spending money?

Some people have hobbies like painting, knitting, or hiking. Me? I just love spending money. Whether it’s shopping for clothes, trying new restaurants or booking a spontaneous trip, I genuinely enjoy the act of spending. It’s not even always about what I buy - it’s the thrill of it, the experience, the little rush of excitement.

Obviously, I don’t spend beyond my means and I make sure my bills are covered. But is it really so bad that my main source of joy comes from parting with my money? Or should I feel guilty about it?

I mean I couldn't think of a worse hobby for me but you do you!
As long as you're not just buying stuff that ends up in landfill then crack on.

FeelingLessTired · 20/04/2025 17:25

Is it becoming a problem that affects your daily life?

Can you afford it. Does it affect what you can do or spend on your family?

If not then crack on.

I have a friend who has to spend every single day. We went away for a long weekend to an air bnb and by 10 am the Saturday morning she was literally (and I mean literally) shaking because she had not bought anything yet. She then went to her room and bought a heated airdryer off Amazon and visibly relaxed. Then she felt she could get about her day. We went an d visited a few places of interest and in every place- even if it was only a bookmark she had to buy something. In the course of a couple of days she spent over £900 on dresses; a carpet; a framed print; year long passes to attractions we were only at for the day and she will not go to again. It became deeply unsettling.

She is constantly broke. She borrows money off friends. She inherited and then sold her mother's bungalow and was supposed to pay off her mortgage but bought a brand new Jaguar and the lease on a shop without telling her DH.

She has a problem. If it is anything like that OP then you need to nip it in the butt asap.

No I wouldn't call it a hobby.
You certainly wouldn't put it on a jo application when asked a out interests?

I mean technically it is though since a hobby is engaging in a particular activity on a recurring basis because it brings the person pleasure. Also, as an ex employment advisor, people frequently put ‘shopping’ as one of their hobbies on their CV without any ill effect although these days unless you’re a teenager, the hobby part isn’t really expected.

I think a lot of people kid themselves that they have hobbies, when in fact they just enjoy buying all the stuff. My theory is that 90% of hobbycraft purchases are never used, or used once only.

This with bells on!! Don’t know why posters are going on about the planet and sustainability, OP didn’t say she buys crap did she!?

I’m sort of like this - the things you mention are fun - but would not give me lasting satisfaction in the way working towards something would - like running or learning a language.

I mean, I like buying things as much as the next person but to say it's your hobby is really quite sad. Maybe spend money on some counselling to explore why?

Why is not having a hobby sad?

Life is pretty busy and if hobbies don’t interest you then why can’t you just read or watch telly in your spare time?

GoodNamesOnly · 20/04/2025 18:19

Seems sad to me. Sorry, you did ask. It would be different if you said you loved food or fashion - those are hobbies - or seeing friends and family, which I don't think is a 'hobby', but is still a very valuable way to spend your time. But you seem to love the money you spend on those things just for its own sake.

GoodNamesOnly · 20/04/2025 18:21

@coldcallerbaiter I don't think not having a hobby is sad. Loads of people don't have hobbies. It's just sad to consider spending money one.

SherlockHolmes · 20/04/2025 18:22

YANBU but you are being shallow.

Feverdream02 · 20/04/2025 18:23

I think you’re just being honest about what the emotional thrill is. Some people might say their hobby is ‘fashion’ or ‘travel’. You can acknowledge that it’s the spending that excites you rather than the things you’re buying.
