Call 111 again in the morning?

I called 111 this morning as my daughter fell from a trampoline and landed awkwardly on her foot.
our local a&e like you to call 111 and they will give you an appointment. It is 14hrs since I called and no one has called back to even assess her over the phone. I get they are busy at a&e but not even having the initial phone consult makes me wonder if she has been forgotten about. I said she could just about weight bare but that it hurt an a lot and she doesn't want to move her foot. I've been dosing her up on ibuprofen and trying to reassure her. However, I had to try and get her to sleep. She says it is now a constant throbing in her foot.
I think I should call again tomorrow morning but my husband says leave it..

You should have already gone to A&E, though understand following their procedures and calling 111 first. I would ignore 111 and just take her in.

Needlesnah · 20/04/2025 00:59

You should take her in.

I wouldn't wait until morning and you should either call again now or go in. Personally I would take her in.

Good luck.

I can almost guarantee that 111 will tell you to take her to A&E anyway. With a history of a fall, difficulty weightbearing and increasing pain she needs an X-ray. 111 cannot assess and diagnose an ankle injury over the phone.

I would just take her to A&E or a Minor Injuries Unit. Just because they like you to call 111 first for an appointment you should just be able to walk in without one as well.

We didn't just take her as previously a receptionist shouted at us for doing that then we had a really long wait. They kept saying this was because we didn't follow the correct procedure.
So I am now just sitting in reception with her. I got the same lecture but I said back that I had done that yesterday but still hadn't heard back so when she woke up and struggled to use the foot getting out of bed I just decided to take her in.
The receptionist still maintains that I should have called back. I replied that "yeah well 111 should have called me back yesterday but here we are!"
God knows how long we will wait now.

Well done for standing up for yourself and your daughter. I highly doubt they deliberately make those who didn’t wait for 111 wait longer than those who did. And as you say, that only works when 111 actually call you back!

TheCurious0range · 20/04/2025 11:32

Our local children's a&e has a tally chart on a whiteboard for fractures earned on a trampoline. You were right to take her and that system sounds ridiculous

Needlesnah · 20/04/2025 11:35

You did the right thing. I can’t believe how lucky I’ve been - I’m
close to a large London hospital which I’ve utilised many, many times (3 teens). Both 111 and the A&E department have always been really good. It’s such a postcode lottery…
If you get any of those follow up NHS texts (‘rate the service you had’) I would definitely make a complaint.

batterypower · 20/04/2025 11:46

We have this nonsense for A&E where I am too. I ignore it, let the receptionist speech go in one ear and out of the other. If my DC needs A&E I won’t be waiting hours for a 111 callback.

I'm glad you went. How is DD?

maybejustonemorebiscuit · 21/04/2025 21:26

There is a break in a metatarsal so now she has a lovely boot.

Not sure what waiting for 111 would have achieved in getting a break seen to….

Hope she’s doing ok OP.
