Anyone’s hay fever been awful this year

Wet winter, dry/sunny spring with not much wind. Perfect conditions for pollen to be sky high.

I am struggling. Taking fexofenadine. Plus the pollen is affecting asthma too,

Any ideas how to reduce the symptoms

I'm on the fexofenedine 180 and I'm struggling! Needing my inhaler more too 😪

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/04/2025 10:54

until this year DS has needed fexofenadine, montelukast, eye drops and a nasal spray.

He’s been completely symptom free this year (age 16)!

montelukast was a game changer for him - ask your GP if it might work for you too.

Yes!

Mine started in February. It's never been that early before. The tree pollen is very high. Apparently it is a "mast year" when an exceptional amount of pollen is produced. The dry weather made it worse. My son has had hayfever for the first time ever.

I am taking Loratidine and Beconase and using my inhaler more. I don't know what else to take.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/04/2025 11:05

Yep. Horrible since mid February. Never known anything like it. I usually only react for a couple of weeks for birch and then ten days at the end.

Fexofenadine, murine eye drops, air filter, cicaplast around my nostrils day and night because it's so sore it's blistered, saline rinses, sudafed - and I'm still sat here with my eyes feeling like they're going to crack because they're so dry yet on the verge of streaming.

Still got to make it through the horse chestnut part of the tree season - not looking forward to the pink ones, as I'm usually worst with them.

Hopefully, it means the trees themselves and wildlife are going to do well this year, but it's not fun.

Jsidken · 19/04/2025 11:09

Yes, awful. I take fexofenadine daily too.
I have just begun trialling taking a probiotic after reading research between use of probiotics, gut health and hay fever. Figured it is worth a try. Might be a coincidence but since staring the probiotic tablets couple of weeks ago I have felt a bit better

Theunamedcat · 19/04/2025 11:11

Try local honey?

You can take different types of antihistamine at the same time according to my Dr check with yours first obviously

Aparecium · 19/04/2025 11:13

My dermatologist has just prescribed me Fexofenadine 180mg up to 4 times a day. That is the equivalent of 6 tablets of the supermarket 120mg strength. He said to start on one or two as my condition dictated, and increase up to four if I had a flare or severe exposure to my allergen, and to decrease gradually back to one or two once the flare or exposure subsided.

IANAHCP. I am just giving this information to you to do further research for yourself if it's helpful.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/04/2025 11:15

Yup
worst ever

MoonlightMemories · 19/04/2025 11:17

Yes, mine has been really very awful this year, especially this past month or so - take a daily ceterizine and have added this month 1-2 daily fexofenadine 120mgs too, which has helped a lot but still have my moments where I get symptoms. I'm a bit of a violent sneezer too, so I've got sore ribs and chest from how badly I've been sneezing. I sneezed so hard the other day really suddenly that I actually felt very dizzy for a short while after.

I've been coughing an awful lot too - no known asthma but something about this really high pollen counts seems to be really setting it off at times.

Year round antihistamine helps a lot for me as if I wait until symptoms start, I never then get ahead of them.

That and taking extra anti-histamine on a bad day. I also used to be on 4x fexofenadine and 4xcetirizine a day for chronic urticaria. Am happy with 1 now but if all that was safe, now I'm just down to one tablet, haivng an extra here and there isn't going to bother me.

Westfacing · 19/04/2025 11:21

Not awful but noticeable by its presence - last year I had none which is why I have a ready supply of antihistamine as it wasn't used last year!

StanfreyPock · 19/04/2025 11:26

Yes, have added wheezing and coughing to the usual litany of symptoms.

It's abating a little now, but the grass cutting hasn't really got under way here so there's that joy still to come 😭

Stuckinarut100 · 19/04/2025 11:42

I’ve had horrendous hay fever for 40 years but this year nothing, yet!

Maitri108 · 19/04/2025 11:44

Mine has been horrendous. For the last few years I haven't had to use antihistamines because it was fine and this year Im having a nightmare.

Stuckinarut100 · 20/04/2025 10:23

I spoke too soon! Definitely got it today!!

MoonlightMemories · 20/04/2025 21:29

There was a pollen bomb yesterday apparently....though thankfully I was indoors so it didn't affect me too much...except for waking up with a cracking sinus inflammation induced migraine that took me several hours of multiple antihistamines and ibuprofen to shift. That was not a nice way to start my day 😥

JaceLancs · 20/04/2025 21:33

I’m on fexofenadine and montelukast - use extra doses of my normal asthma inhaler - this year has been terrible - the worst has been the eyes - thought I had an eye infection and 2 courses of oral antibiotics and 3 different types of drops including one for fungal infections I’ve realised it’s hay fever!
Wheezing all the time
I’m on 180mg fexofenadine - 1 a day or 2 if it’s bad - might need to check if I can take it more often

44PumpLane · 20/04/2025 21:34

Nothing yet for me this year......not sure what type of pollen it is that I'm allergic to but I'm very grateful that so far it's not getting me!
