Where do people get cats from now?

Just that really, where do people get cats or dogs? I've sadly just lost my tabby cat Poppy. It's still quite raw and I probably won't get another as I do have another cat who was never very keen on her. Poppy was so sweet and just ignored Jess swipes growls and hissing, but obviously people can't post on Facebook anymore. I got Poppy from the cats protection when she was 4 but I'm not sure how fussy they are these days. I see lots of cats but wonder where people get them.

There are many many cats & kittens in rescues. Adopt don't shop.

Our local rescue posted yesterday about the amount of cat food they need for their kittens. Something like 58 pouches a day.

Ruggerlass · 19/04/2025 09:41

From animal shelters. There are lots of cats/kittens needing loving homes. I adopted mine from the RSPCA. Rescue centres are not being fussy. They just want to make sure as much as possible that the animal is the right fit for that particular household.

Shelters 100%. I'd recommend getting an older cat, although kittens are lovely at least you know what you're getting with a adult cat.
Be warned though, last time I went to adopt an elderly moggy I left the shelter with 3 DCats 😅

DD got a cat recently. She was originally going to adopt but some of the shelters would not allow her to because her cat has to be a housecat as she lives in a flat. The ones that would didn't have anything suitable. However then she was told, via one of the shelters, of some people who unexpectedly had a litter so she got a kitten from them who was nearly 4 months.

ETA I've seen plenty of cats advertised that need to be indoor only.

There are a couple of cat rescues locally to us on Facebook. Can you look into that? We also got guinea pigs from the RSPCA and they had lots of cats up for adoption

goagain · 19/04/2025 10:00

Definitely rescue. They do a great job, but nothing sadder than an animal in a cage. They need homes x

Ddakji · 19/04/2025 10:03

Local rescue centre (Celia Hammond Animal Trust, in south east London and Kent). Not that fussy in that they know most homes are better for their cats and kittens than their rescue centre.

Cat rescues, they are bursting with kittens if that’s what you want, but also will help match you with the perfect cat for you. I’m in the north of England and it was £110 for my cat already neutered and fully vaccinated and chipped, fleed and wormed and came with a weeks worth of food. Way cheaper than buying a kitten and then paying for all the extras.

IamSmarticus · 19/04/2025 10:04

Mine came from a local cat rescue - not a kitten, he was 18mths old and cost us a donation of £50.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 19/04/2025 10:05

Id also say if the first rescue you check is too fussy, try another. Some are more intrusive than others.

We got ours from a rescue centre. I didn’t find them difficult to deal with at all. I did need to send them a video walk through of our house, which I completely understood as they wanted to be sure it was suitable. We had a 30-40 mins video call to talk through settling a cat in, poisonous plants, vaccinations and generally looking after them which was helpful. We then went to the centre to meet some of the cats they thought would be suitable and they dropped the one we fell in love with, at our house that evening! It was a very smooth process. It was heartbreaking seeing just how many cats they had at the centre that needed homes.

edwinbear · 19/04/2025 10:08

@Ddakji ours came from Celia Hammond too and I completely agree that whilst they obviously need to know the cats will be well cared for, they do seem to acknowledge most homes will be better than being in a centre.

SomethingFun · 19/04/2025 10:09

Rescue! I got our two as kittens a couple of years ago - I just needed to send pics of my house and have a quick chat as I’d already had cats before. Apart from a kitten my dm’s colleague gave us 40 years ago I’ve always got cats/ kittens from rescue centres.

We were rejected by Battersea when we got our first pair, whereas CH wanted us to take more than 2!

RhaenysRocks · 19/04/2025 10:11

Yep. We got kittens from Cat Protection, neutered and jabbed, microchipped etc. My older cat I ended up getting on Freecycle of all places, just someone that couldn't manage any more.

Darkclothes · 19/04/2025 10:11

Our neighbours are in their 80's, but very active. 1 of their elderly cats died and they wanted another older cat. The local shelters and rescue centres wouldn't let them adopt/buy another, saying our neighbours were too old.

They contacted the cinnamon trust who were excellent. The company transported the cat in an air conditioned van several summers ago. I think it was fostered, because the cinnamon trust paid all future vet bills! My neighbours, and both cats are still going strong.

We buy ours from rescue centres, although our current cat I found stuck in a road drain as a kitten, the vet guessed she was around 4 weeks old so who knows what happened to the rest of the litter.

MyMumTracyBeaker · 19/04/2025 10:14

Our lovely boy was from a rescue, we paid £60, he was chipped, neutered and vaccinated. He was 4 years old when we adopted him and he's the biggest softie in the world.

i have rescued 2 cats one from CPL and one a stray who turned up on my doorstep. I applied to CPL a month ago for a kitten on their website and I have heard nothing! I had a acknowledge of receipt but the kitten has now been reserved.

Ketzele · 19/04/2025 10:17

My two kittens came from a shelter at 9 weeks old.

lunaemma · 19/04/2025 10:19

Local smaller cat rescue, he was £60 and is an absolute dude

We have four "indoor" cats from a rescue. We paid to get the garden cat proofed though so they do go outside safely now

NoraLuka · 19/04/2025 10:23

We got ours from a friend who found a feral cat had given birth to kittens in his garage! Nobody could ever get close to the mum but the kittens were used to humans almost from birth and were completely tame.
