My 16 month old boy has just went into his toddler bed in his own room. He's sleeping so much better now in his own bed. Last night he got up at 4am and walked out his room and straight to my room. I was shocked when I woke up. I felt terrible to think he could have been wandering about or something could have happened to him. Although he had no access to any other rooms, as all the doors were closed over, and we don't have stairs. I still worry.

My question is to other mums and dads. Do you think I should leave his door open or close it over. What did you do? I'm not sure if it's best to have him come find me or play in his room. I do have a camera but I didn't hear him getting out of bed.

Any advice would be great.

I had a stairgate across his door until he was about 3. That worked fairly well.

Stair gate in his room.

We had a stair gate across the door too.

Do you what you normally do with his bedroom door, I always keep my door open. He would presumably cry/shout out/probably both if he didn't know where to find you.

Sorry but how did you not anticipate him being able to walk around freely?

I definitely wouldn’t shut his door. He might panic if he can’t get out, and you might not hear him. A stair gate over the door if you want to keep him contained.

if it’s baby proofed , doors shut, no stairs…I don’t really see the problem though? Unless he has a knack for unlocking the front door or something

Mine had a stair gate across their bedroom doorways when they were that small. Didn’t keep them in bed but they’d stand at the gate calling screaming for me and await rescue rather than wander around. Worked well.

@Pinkelephant66 he's just started sleeping in his toddler bed. I guess I just assumed I would have heard him on the monitor or heard him. He usually cries when he wakes up. He didn't he just walked through. I just wasn't sure if it's safer for him to have the room door closed or walk through. My partner says I'm a over thinker. Always thinking of the worse case scenario.

I always shut the door. Stay in bed. Shout if you need me.

People say you should shut all the bedroom doors for fire safety, but personally I don't shut my door and I prefer to use stair gate on the doorways of small children.

I wouldn't relax knowing they could roam around the house, I would worry too much that one of the doors wasn't closed properly all they fetch something to stand on to open the door
