To ask - what’s the “silliest” reason you’ve ever left a job (according to other people)?

We always hear the big, justifiable reasons - terrible pay, long hours, toxic management - but I’m wondering about the smaller things that pushed you to quit, even if others didn’t understand. For example, was it a weird office atmosphere, a passive-aggressive manager, too much small talk? What’s made you walk away from a job that looked perfectly fine from the outside?

For me, it was the constant birthday fuss. Every single month there was cake, decorations, and a forced gathering where everyone had to awkwardly sing and make small talk in the kitchen. I know it sounds minor (and maybe petty) but the fake cheer, the pressure to join in, and the loud “fun” started to feel unbearable. I realised I’d rather be somewhere with a bit more quiet professionalism - and less icing.

I left a job once because I was asked to make coffee for a client meeting and I didn't know how to use a cafetiere. I had quite literally never seen one in my life. I waited for the kitchen to empty, boiled the kettle, put nescafe instant into the cafetiere added the water, took it into the clients and promptly handed in my notice...

I didn't leave the job but I turned down a job offer because the contract had a dress code even though I was full time WFH in a non client facing role. It specified blouse, suits and skirts. They wouldn't budge to take it out it was just a blanket rule for all. I had another offer that was same salary and benefits but in the end it was that that made me go somewhere else.

The uniform made me look and feel horrific about myself. Tight pencil skirt and blouse tucked in. I looked gross, and felt unbelievably self-conscious.
