Ex stole car

Nahme · 17/04/2025 23:58

Finally got divorced 6 years after ex left me for a 23 year old - he dragged it out as long as he could. We had a paid off jointly owned car that I have used for the past 11 years.
It needed some work on it, about £1k so I asked it to be signed over to me. My ex refused & had it towed from outside my house. I still have the keys wwyd?

Was the car not discussed in the divorce financials ?
you say ' we ' paid off the ' jointly owned ' car

I suppose when it comes down to it, whose name is on the V5 form I think it's called

INeedAnotherName · 18/04/2025 00:22

Who actually paid for it? Look at who signed the financial paperwork or got the loan - that person is the legal owner.

I'm very surprised it didn't come up as an asset in the financial consent part of the divorce though.

Edit - it's not the Registered Keeper or whatever the logbook is called. It is the person who is on the Bill of Sale/Receipt at the beginning.

Is he the legal owner?

Eveningstart · 18/04/2025 08:27

Who is the keeper?

simple. As. That.

Depends who a court would say legally owned it and what was said about the car as part of the divorce

No court needs to be involved!!

who is the keeper, that simple

If someone "stole" the car you wouldn't even ask, you would phone the police.
You need to establish who owns the car (and if its worth fighting over)

GRex · 18/04/2025 08:30

Only one of you owns the car, if he's had it towed then clearly that person is not you OR you need to talk to the tow company showing your paperwork. Waiting for the answer about why you didn't include it in the settlement yet expected to keep it?

Well it's not really. Even the V5 says that the registered keeper isn't necessarily the owner.

Agreed

however the registered keeper wields control over the car in every respect from a legal standpoint.
