DLA RATES FOR AUTISM AND UC?

boymummy2021 · 17/04/2025 20:51

AWARDED DLA! I ORIGINALLY POSTED THIS A FEW WEEKS AGO!!
"just curious, I am a single mother of two boys age 6 and 7, I haven't heard from there dad in years he's just disappeared so I get no help. My 8 year old is with cahms being assessed for autism, we've been with them for 3 years, I received a call last week and they said he is autistic, not just autistic but severely (I always knew but was indenial). He is with a paediatric for eating disorders and stomach issues, he has an echp plan as he is so behind in school, a continence nurse as he cannot go to the toilet or sit on a toilet he fears it, he stool withholds and wears pull ups and soils him self all day, he has a fear of toilets, as doesn't like how a toilet seat feels, he doesn't wear shoes or socks and walks around on tip toes all day, he only eats dry beige food (pasta and chips).
I have sent all this info of appointments with continence nurses, pediatrics, cahms, etc to the DLA in December his pull ups and wipes and special dietary requirements such as pedicure as he doesn't eat much, cost me an Arm and a leg I dont know what DLA is and didnt really want to apply because I know the government are in enough finical crisis. but I so need help I can't take it anymore im living off pennies im struggling so much. due to his needs I'm over £8000 in debt trying to pay for the pull ups and social drinks each month without help from his father, how much do you think he may get if awarded, I put on form that im up all night caring for him as he soils through the night and shakes after stool withholding all day, his currently on pediasure for his dietary needs and on movical for a disimpaction because of the stool withholding, its so hard :'( ive been to early help and add up charities for help with his conditions and autism as he has outbursts."

We've been awarded high rate for motability and daily care!! So receiving over £700 a month and got it backdated. Is there a special element I can apply for via universal credit for him or is it just DLA how much universal credit can you get? and say if I decide not to apply for it as dont need it right now, if I applied in the future say 2 years from now could I get it backdated for years or is there a cut off point. I receive LCWRA and pip myself as disabled so dont want to take too much from government :(

I don't think you need to apply, UC will be notified and add the disabled child element and back date it to when you became elligibe for DLA. Might be worth popping a note on your UC journal to inform them you have been awarded it. You can find the rates online.

Bigcat25 · 17/04/2025 21:21

Take as much as your entitled to, you don't have to feel guilty. You and your kids deserve to have your needs met, and you work very hard.

Noperope · 17/04/2025 21:25

UC definitely need to be notified! You can do it through your journal in the report a change section. You will receive carers element and disabled child element. They will also remove any minimum income floor if this applies to you.

Check your statement to ensure you are receiving each element. UC can be a bit of a shitshow in this regard and I had to fight for each thing individually.

Happy for you op 🥰

Noperope · 17/04/2025 21:27

Apply for it now, don't leave it then try to backdate it as you're required to report any changes as part of your agreements.

chasegirl · 17/04/2025 21:30

Report a change on your claim, children and other people who live either you to update your sons information to include the dla. And then do another report a change 'caring for someone' you will need to add your sons details and dla there as well.

You definitely need to use the date of the dla award as the date you report the change from. Then send a journal message asking for backdating of any additional elements to that date explaining it took that long to get the dla awarded

Katemax82 · 17/04/2025 22:09

My son was on high rate pip we got about 460 extra UC for him.i think

LakieLady · 17/04/2025 22:17

You'll get the higher rate of the disabled child element (£495) and around £200 for the carer element added to your UC, OP.

I really hope this will make things a little easier for you.

Lougle · 17/04/2025 22:25

You need to report the change and give the date of change as the date that your DLA was awarded (not the date of the decision letter). They will say that you have reported the change too late, then you have to ask for special consideration on the grounds that you didn't know about the award until the date on the decision letter. As long as you've reported it promptly after getting the decision letter, they'll back date the extra disability element of UC to the date of the DLA award.

OP won't get carer's element as they are getting LCWRA. One person can't get both.

Kaffiene · 17/04/2025 23:10

Great advice already given for the disabled child element but you won’t be eligible for the carer element as you already get LCWRA.
You may also be eligible for council tax reduction if you don’t already get it.

Kaffiene · 17/04/2025 23:13

Also I know you said their dad has disappeared put in a claim for Child Maintenance, if he is working they will find him.

Apologies, I didn't know that.

Iamaverysillyperson · 18/04/2025 10:17

You need to notify UC via a note in your journal.

WhoMeMissYesYouMiss · 18/04/2025 10:28

Oh good! Would it be Mumsnet without a bit of Provocateur Bingo? You are well on your way to a full house there. Do you have any pets?

Whowhatwhere21 · 18/04/2025 10:45

You will be entitled to more from UC but you do have to notify them and I can't remember how much exactly. Also what is your housing situation? I assume you are renting if not in work, so do your children have separate bedrooms or are you in a 2 bed with them sharing?
