To think if you have wooden floorboard stairs..

You should use a soft brush attachment to vacuum them?
The thud of the plastic attachment echos and it’s extremely loud on a hollow staircase without carpet.
How do you clean your wooden stairs and do you consider the noise when doing so?

Yes YABU.

AndImBrit · 17/04/2025 13:43

I use the plastic end, and the noise of the vacuum is already loud so some extra banging isn’t going to change much.

I’ve literally never thought about how much noise I make while vacuuming, other than the noise of the vacuum itself.

Questionmark111 · 17/04/2025 13:43

In what sense?

Not unreasonable especially if you live in a flat / terraced house / maisonette situation. I can’t be doing with lugging and balancing a hoover on the stairs anyway, so I use a brush and hoover up the dust and dirt at the bottom. Much easier.

HairyGarden · 17/04/2025 14:14

Who is being affected?

Watermill · 17/04/2025 14:15

Given how bloody loud the vacuum is, YABU

bloodredfeaturewall · 17/04/2025 14:19

brush followed by damp mopping.

Frowningprovidence · 17/04/2025 14:20

I think you should consider your neighbours although, if it's not at an anti social time, I'm not sure hoovering noise is unreasonable.

I do think it would be easier to sweep the stairs though.

Questionmark111 · 17/04/2025 14:23

Just to clarify it’s my neighbours who are vacuuming their wooden stairs. I can’t hear the vacuum itself just the constant thump of the attachment. I just wanted to gauge opinions on others doing this or using softer attachments to avoid any noise. So YABU- they can vacuum how they like. YANBU- they should use a soft brush attachment.

Nope. I just hoover as normal.

carpool · 17/04/2025 22:43

I just sweep with a brush

SarahAndQuack · 17/04/2025 22:49

I think if the soundproofing is that bad, you and your neighbour need to discuss adding to it.

Most people do not need to consider how they use a vacuum cleaner before they start the job.

How often do they vacuum that it could possibly be an issue?

You're complaining about this at 2:30 PM!?!?

You need a hobby OP

BertieBotts · 17/04/2025 23:26

How often do they vacuum the stairs? Confused it's not exactly an every day chore.

I think this is a non issue (and I can be oversensitive about sound).
