Do people really eat like this?

Kuind · 17/04/2025 09:57

Dh’s family were visiting last week. We took them to a restaurant which had insane portions. I mean no one finished their plate.

But the next day NONE of his family ate. They all said they weren’t hungry and full from the day before. They just had coffee and a biscuit or two.

I mean I certainly didn’t need breakfast and could have got away with not having lunch but I was famished by dinner. So dh and I had toasties.

Do these people genuinely just not feel hunger or is it just a habit?

Some people do experience hunger that way. Since being on Mounjaro I now experience less hunger if I've eaten more the day before, whereas previously my appetite definitely reset every day, even after every meal. I'd still want to eat though, just probably smaller amounts.

RealityContinuesToRuinMyLife · 17/04/2025 10:01

Maybe they were all constipated and still feeling stuffed? Or do they have snacks in their room? Don’t like your cooking so have been for a walk and bought sandwiches?

If I’ve had a huge meal I would compensate the next day by not having too much, but would probably have a bit of fruit and then maybe just have beans on toast for dinner. I wouldn’t eat nothing.

JoanIsNotAwful · 17/04/2025 10:02

It's weird. We're not snakes.

Topseyt123 · 17/04/2025 10:02

It can take me a long time to feel hungry again, but by mid afternoon of the following day I would definitely be wanting something. Maybe before then.

Tontostitis · 17/04/2025 10:03

24 hours of starving is not normal no. We wouldn't celebrate Boxing Day if it was

GrandHighPoohbah · 17/04/2025 10:03

I have found as I have aged that it's easier to "atone" for a high calorie day the next day, as I can no longer get away with a higher calorie intake. I would probably have a fast day if the meal had been enormous. I might feel a bit hungry but would probably not eat.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 17/04/2025 10:03

Literally one or two biscuits in a day or is that an exaggeration??

MissyB1 · 17/04/2025 10:04

I often think those people do eat really, they just deny it.

MissyB1 · 17/04/2025 10:05

And when they said "a couple of biscuits" it was probably half a packet, and they would have been better off having a cheese sandwich.

Kuind · 17/04/2025 10:07

4 of them shared a biscuit pack with roughly 12 biscuits in. They were bigger than a digestive but smaller than a choc chip cookie

DH is like this. He’ll eat an enormous breakfast and then decide that “we” won’t need to eat for the rest of the day. Even when I’ve only eaten a solitary boiled egg. When I insist on something later in the day he says “I can’t believe you’re eating again!” It drives me mad.

claudiawinklemansfringetrimmer · 17/04/2025 10:08

I think older people do, my parents are in their 60s and have suddenly started making a massive deal about how they CAN’T POSSIBLY eat dinner if they’ve had a decent size lunch

But you’re on an appetite suppressant medication so it’s unnatural. I think OP was referring to natural ways of eating.

Maybe that's it? This family are reptiles and have managed to hide it from the OP.

I'm on a medication that mimics the effect that OP is talking about that occurs naturally in some people.

I eat when I’m hungry. I have no issues not eating for a 16-18 hour stretch most days and can do an 84 hour fast pretty easily. I don’t eat things which cause blood sugar highs and crashes which lead to need to eat again, nor do I eat to the clock. Lots of people eat through boredom rather than true hunger, and the high proportion of processed rubbish isn’t going anyone any favours.

FrenchandSaunders · 17/04/2025 10:15

A big evening meal has the opposite effect the next day, I wake up ravenous.

Unpaidviewer · 17/04/2025 10:21

Unfortunately I'm the opposite. If I stuff myself with a meal or takeaway then I wake up feeling like I haven't eaten for a month. My DH is the opposite and will regularly forget to eat.

MattCauthon · 17/04/2025 10:27

This level seems extreme, but I do know a lot of people who either will choose not to eat or who genuinely don't seem to feel hunger after a large meal. And some who will actively choose to fast for 24 hours to compensate for larger meals.

Jk987 · 17/04/2025 10:31

I do that sometimes to balance it out.

I can guarantee that most people without disordered eating can't comfortably go for multiple days without eating, however unprocessed/low sugar their diet

DancingLions · 17/04/2025 10:33

If I have a really big meal the night before, then I might just have a bit of toast, cheese and crackers or something the next evening. I do still tend to feel full if I've ate a lot the night before. Same with lunch, if I have a large lunch and/or something cooked, then I don't want dinner.

Some people just need to eat more regularly or they feel unwell. Doesn't always mean they eat more. My mum eats probably 6 times a day at least. But always tiny portions. Whereas I tend to have one large meal and be done with it.

Legomania · 17/04/2025 10:35

My in-laws are like this. I can't fit much in in one sitting so have to eat regularly; sometimes I wish it weren't the case. But not being hungry the next day seems extreme to me

WonderingWanda · 17/04/2025 10:38

If I overeat it makes my hungrier the next day.
