I suspect I will be made redundant today.

Been with the employer for just over 2 years. I’m aged 45.

i work in a corporate IT roles: suspect my job will be moved overseas.

can I ask if you have been made redundant from similar role. What type of redundancy package did you get?

Basic is notice period (might be gardening leave so you get pay but don’t have to work) plus a week pay per year worked but it’s capped.

dh’s organisation offered that plus 2.5 with no cap.

I received a month per year of work plus 3 months notice. It was just over 8k which was great back in 2009 as I walked into another job.

You can ask for additional things - see if they will pay for support to help you with employment, I’ve previously been allowed to keep a laptop that they’ve wiped etc.

£83k, took £30k tax free, put the rest in my pension. Got a new job on same money straight away.

boredoflaundry · 17/04/2025 13:12

@Paulsinpieces if your role is being moved over seas, is it something you could do remotely? If so you might be entitled to be TUPE’d across to that department or organisation.
you need to do more research and ask more questions …. But this is a key question to ask !!

The company I work for has a different approach each time it comes around.

This year they were offering 6 months pay if you took voluntary and statutory minimum if they had to go to a compulsory process.

Last year it was statutory minimum for both compulsory & voluntary (so no point volunteering!).

Worldgonecrazy · 17/04/2025 13:13

Been in a similar situation three times. Got between 2-6 months pay. If you get ‘gardening leave’ check what your situation would be with regards to starting work with a new employer. If you’re in demand you could walk straight into another job.

potplant · 17/04/2025 13:21

I wasn’t there long enough for statutory redundancy, but I still got paid 6 months salary. They also let me keep some of the kit they bought me for my home office, paid for my prof subs (just coincidence it was due at the time) and I had 6 months access to Udemy which they let me keep.
I thought I did pretty well out of it.

Everywhere is different, you will soon find out what’s on offer. Unless the process hasn’t been followed legally, you probably won’t have much opportunity to negotiate anything better.

Horserider5678 · 17/04/2025 13:42

I would get 24 months but then I have been with my employer for years!

Delphiniumandlupins · 17/04/2025 13:51

Some years ago I got over a year's pay, once I got the tax back. This was a good company scheme, over 11 years in the job (mostly over age 40), Pay In Lieu Of Notice, holiday leave etc.

My husband was made redundant in December in a similar field of work. He had only been there since May and received 3.5 months full pay. We were very relieved. Sorry your going through it. Its very stressful. It hit us just as I was entering in to the zero pay part of my maternity leave

Paulsinpieces · 17/04/2025 20:44

Thanks everyone: unfortunately I was right and it looks like I will be made redundant.

applied online for a few roles this afternoon, and next week I’ll apply for more (having a day with my kids tomorrow)

There’s a government redundancy calculator who can check for redundancy pay. Sorry to hear this.

HappyHappyy · 17/04/2025 21:14

Sorry to hear your company is making your role redundant. Having been through it post covid, it is a tough time and can knock your confidence. Be gentle with yourself and take some time out to prioritise your own well being at the beginning. After my initial period of feeling like I’d failed and was a complete loser, I’m now in a job I love, earning more and has opened up far more opportunity. Sending lots of positivity your way 😀

Thanks so much. I’m feeling a bit unsettled, but optimistic that I will find something else. Just need to be a bit more careful with money for a while

Have they gone through the process? What have they told you about what you'll be entitled to?

YorkshireTeaDrinker2 · 20/04/2025 08:22

I took voluntary redundancy after 6 years. 1 month salary for every year worked plus a bonus of 3 months salary (it was a VR scheme so the extra was offered as an incentive). So 6 months salary. I figured that was long enough to find something else and jumped at it.

AprilBunny · 20/04/2025 08:26

My DS aged 36 received 11 weeks pay for 11 service plus 10 weeks PILON.

My DH received almost a years salary which was enhanced redundancy pay and three months PILON.

Meadowfinch · 20/04/2025 08:34

Anything between statutory minimum and £40k depending on how much they wanted to buy my silence.

The latter was after they 'made me redundant' first day back after maternity leave, having given my job (head of dept) to the sales director's wife. And they only paid out, four days before the tribunal hearing.

Good luck OP, I hope they treat you well.
