To eat chilli left out overnight

Purplegiraffe345 · 17/04/2025 06:53

I batch cooked chilli last night, put it in sealed containers and left it on the side to cool. I finished cooking around 8pm but realised around 5am this morning that the pots were still out on the side. I then put the pots in the fridge. I plan to freeze them later.

Will they be OK to eat?

i wouldn’t.

Mosaic123 · 17/04/2025 06:54

I probably wouldn't eat that.
But might be tempted.

I might do a test eating and then see if I felt ok. Just me and no one else.

Kallabra · 17/04/2025 06:54

I would.

TheMasterplan23 · 17/04/2025 06:55

I wouldn’t. DH definitely would….and in fairness he’s never been ill from doing so (but he does seem to have a cast iron stomach)

anon2022anon · 17/04/2025 06:56

I would 100% eat it, and regularly do. I would stick it in the fridge and have it for my lunches.

SilverButton · 17/04/2025 06:57

I would.

Crispyapple · 17/04/2025 06:59

I’ve done this before and been fine. As long as it’s piping hot throughout when reheated

EilishMcCandlish · 17/04/2025 07:00

Absolutely. Throwing it out would be completely OTT.

TheBlueRobin · 17/04/2025 07:02

It will be fine. Just make sure its piping hot.

Ryeman · 17/04/2025 07:02

Yes

Missey85 · 17/04/2025 07:11

I have before when I forgot to put it away 🙂 it's not a fish dish it should be ok make sure to heat it properly

HardCow11 · 17/04/2025 07:12

It will be absolutely fine. I’ve done this loads of times and then eaten the food with no issues.

Morningstarter · 17/04/2025 07:22

I’m in south east and been wonderfully mild recently

so no way. Doubt it fell under 13 degrees in my kitchen last night

Usernamesarenoteasy · 17/04/2025 07:23

I would, and have, with various different things. I'm always forgetting to put batch cooked stuff in the fridge.

Purplegiraffe345 · 17/04/2025 07:24

Thanks all, I did this with cottage pie as well (you’d think I’d learn by now) and it was ok.

It’s so annoying because I batch cooked like 7 meals to save me time later and if I throw it away now it will be a bigger waste of time.

The pots were sealed with a lid which I hope helps. It is also beef which is safer.

I might try one tonight and see if it’s ok. Is that a good idea?

It was cooked last night not last week. I'd definitely eat it. Obviously cooking it first.

ShaunaSadeki · 17/04/2025 07:28

I would 100% eat this, even more confidently if by no beef, you mean it is meat free.

pearbottomjeans · 17/04/2025 07:28

Definitely, you can’t waste all that! Just make sure it’s boiling hot when you come to eat it.

The other day I combined fresh bolognese with few months old bolognese form the freezer that was originally made from almost-old meat, then I froze that altogether, then I unfroze it a few weeks later and we all ate it and no one was ill. Then I refroze the leftovers and this week we ate it again and we’re all fine and it was fucking delicious! While all this was going on I was definitely thinking of the Mumsnet outrage 😆

metellaestinatrio · 17/04/2025 07:28

Yes definitely! But I probably wouldn’t feed it to someone elderly / pregnant etc. just in case.

Sorry I mean beef I.e. a safer meat than others and cooked well.

Chilli I would
chicken or fish absolutely not

Hercisback1 · 17/04/2025 07:30

It'll be absolutely fine as long as you heat it through properly.

I'm horrified at the people who would throw it away.

Agree. I pretty much always leave my chilli/ragu etc in its cookin pan on the cold stove overnight all year round and I’ve not died yet 😁

Also it’s actually been quite cold overnight so certainly my kitchen feels pretty fridge like at the moment … I’d have no qualms about eating.
