I know I’m a bit late with this one but has anyone else seen it recently?? I’m gobsmacked!

Is that the one where they thought they were home schooling them but in reality they were just running wild?

Bobbieiris · 17/04/2025 07:14

Yes I saw this last year and it just seemed so irresponsible….especially when they were planning to take their children travelling without having any vaccinations. To be honest it seemed quite neglectful and lazy to me, I can see what they were trying to do but I don’t think it was doing them or their children any favours. And the father saying he didn’t work because he just ‘didn’t want to’!
They just don’t seem to be preparing their kids for adult life and they don’t seem to socialise with other children or have much of an education either, which is sad

Wildflowers99 · 17/04/2025 07:24

I’m not against homeschool by any stretch and I’ve seen it very well done in some cases, but holy moly this was basically neglect. Kids not sleeping til 10/11pm, up all hours on the iPad, the toddler eating oven chips and monster munch 😳

I thought the boy seemed really unhappy, restless and bored. They didn’t seem to go out much, just sitting around at home with the tablet or sometimes in the garden. I wonder how they’re doing now.

the part about malaria was shocking

OP posts:
MissionaryMumtoOne · 17/04/2025 07:25

It’s disguised neglect. And shouldn’t be allowed. They are not setting the children up for the real world. They are selfishly putting their own wants and agendas above the children’s needs. I am 100 percent supportive of homeschooling and even a few alternative measures but those children are being neglected by their own parents on tv and it’s being watched for entertainment and it’s so sad 😞

QuillBill · 17/04/2025 07:39

I agree that they were doing it because they were lazy. At the time I thought that if they weren’t middle class they would have had their dc taken into care for neglect. The boy was bored half to death.

Lulu1919 · 17/04/2025 07:51

Ooh I missed this...where could I watch it ?

Augustus40 · 17/04/2025 07:56

Did anybody watch the one about young Japanese women earning money with middle aged men? The height of sleaze. I could not bear to watch it but caught some of it. Stacey Dooley covers many interesting topics.

Poppymeldrum · 17/04/2025 07:58

The girl was on this morning with her parents and weed on the rug
Her parents just sat on the sofa with those gormless smiles and didn't even stand up
I can't do links as I'm useless at tech,but it's on YouTube

BumbleBeegu · 17/04/2025 08:08

The mum on this was just so ‘woo’ and seemed totally spaced out I thought! Dad was a lazy, work-shy tosser!

The neglect was high…house was a tip, nutrition was low, children were dirty and unkempt. Honestly gave me the rage!

I almost choked on my coffee when mum said she wanted to go travelling with the children when they were a bit older, with NO vaccinations (and NO way to fund this ‘adventure’!!). How the hell is she expecting this to pan out?? 😱🤯🤦‍♀️

I agree that the boy seemed utterly bored, but he also seemed more than a bit strange to me…the way he crouched in a corner with his bowl of weird food, and ate like a wild animal, and was unable to communicate at even a basic level. Could be that he just was poorly socialised of course (in fact probably this to be fair). However…it was very clear that this environment did not suit him, and if there IS a SEND issue, he won’t get any kind of support from his crazy woo parents!

I really hope someone from social services was watching this!

Superhansrantowindsor · 17/04/2025 08:12

It’s quite old that programme. She’s on Facebook and instagram and hasn’t changed.

Wildflowers99 · 17/04/2025 10:45

It’s on BBC iPlayer.

I thought the same about the boy. Girls seem to
learn to socialise and conform a bit better, but I think boys are more likely to struggle with this, and in every ‘woo’ homeschool family I’ve known, the sons have been frankly very odd, while the daughters seem to have adapted a bit better and can engage with other people on a slightly higher level. You could tell the poor thing desperately needed to kick a ball/climb a tree with some mates, get an early night and eat something that wasn’t crisps/chips and raw veg.

That episode still lives in my head. Doesn't the Mum keep going on about everything being 'child led'? What b*llocks. A parent should not abdicate responsibility for their child, to that child. Agree with others that the parents, the pair of them, are lazy, weak and basically neglectful.

Agree about the Dad. At one point he suggested the government should provide everyone with a house on a equal basis, as if this were a new and enlightened idea. Stacey D missed the opportunity to point out that this set up already applies in Communist states, but in return the government requires everyone to do a day's work. Idle tosser.

fudgesmummy · 17/04/2025 12:35

It made me laugh out loud when, after talking to the mum about vaccinations, Stacey said “we’re not on the same page, in the same book, and not even in the same library!!” 😆

I’ve been watching all her sleep over programs again on BBC I player.
I love Stacey Dooley!

IveGotAnUnusuallyLargePelvisISwear · 17/04/2025 12:56

I personally prefer to outsource my children’s education to people who know what they’re doing, e.g teachers, but I do understand why some people prefer to homeschool or simply have no choice but to.

What I don’t understand is how these parents had the neck to pretend their way of living was in any way beneficial to their children. Their eldest is 8 (at the time anyway) and couldn’t read or write at all and his parents apparently had no interest or inclination to teach him that at all and it was a case of “oh, he’ll figure it out one day, right now it’s more important that he knows himself”. Babe, he does know himself, pretty well. He’s with only himself for most of his life because he doesn’t mix with anyone outside of his immediate family. He looked bored, exhausted and aimless. His diet and complete lack of routine probably doesn’t help.

The kids seemed lovely btw, but everything they were doing: walks in the woods, playing together, on bloody screens is what most other children do as well as going to school/nursery. I really like Stacey Dooley and the programme was interesting but infuriating.

MrsSunshine2b · 17/04/2025 13:02

I've tried to find out where they are now and there's a post on their facebook page about PDA.

Do their kids have PDA or have they just grown up believing that they don't have to do anything except exactly what they want to do at all times?

The eldest one would be 14 now. Apparently he learned to read by himself and is "fully literate", although who knows what they define as "literate"?

Wildflowers99 · 17/04/2025 13:13

I just had a Quick Look on the fb page (no idea why that’s in capitals), the girls feature quite a bit in photos but their son has completely vanished?

I’m willing to bet he has some ‘issues’ now and rather than examine whether their approach caused them, they’ll say ‘he has X/Y problem, so good thing we unschooled and gentle parented as he’s naturally anxious/PDA/whatever and wouldn’t have coped with a conventional approach..’

This would be interesting to know how you can establish whether someone is ND- specifically with something like PDA if they’ve been brought up the way these children have been, being able to do whatever they want, when they want. I’m not doubting an official diagnosis btw, but 2 of mine are autistic, 1 with a significant learning delay and ADHD on top and we needed school/nursery and other outside help to establish that with the paediatricians. This family apparently didn’t have that because they didn’t want it.

Hopefully it’s worked out ok for all of the children in the end. Don’t give a stuff about their lazy arse parents.

Takeoutyourhen · 17/04/2025 13:14

Is this the couple from East Sussex? They might have had another child. Child-led parenting rings a bell…

SleepQuest33 · 17/04/2025 13:19

Those poor children! What a wasted childhood. No stimulation no education. Thst shoukd be a crime.

I think they were expecting the government to fund it all. I am sure I remember they said they claimed tax credits etc.

I saw this a few months ago and googled them. The oldest child has since been diagnosed with ASD I believe.

I would really like to know how they are getting on under the new UC rules. The dad got away with his part time teaching under WTC but he won't be considered gainfully self employed as far as UC are concerned.

Then I’m sure their new way forward financially is DLA and carers 🤷🏻‍♀️

They are probably claiming DLA which switches off work commitments.
