Watching documentary about the family with 22 kids!

The Radley family. How do they do it? They seem to be really good parents actually. I cannot imagine how you cope with so many kids though. My blood pressure is through the roof just watching this! There are multiple dogs as well! I have 2 kids (adults now) and that was enough for me. How will they cope if all 22 go to Uni? My brain is fried!

OP posts:

Sorry, I am not up to date with what it is called, but a loan for Uni would be open to them, just like other people, is what I mean. The OP is framing like the parents would have to pay for however many of their children wanted to go.

Yes, the loan the student gets is directly related to their parents income and parents must top up the difference.

@LadyKenya
These days the max maintenance loan just about covers rent ( area dependent of course ) and if you’re lucky a bit extra.
Its not enough to survive on.
Whilst students can pick up jobs to top up there are far too many students chasing far too few jobs so this cannot be relied upon.

So many parents are increasingly having to support their kids whilst at Uni.

I've not watched the programme, but I've seen it advertised and the 1 thing I can't understand is how do they afford to feed, clothe, house, educate etc 22 children? It must cost them a fortune. Are they secretly millionaires?

DrPrunesqualer · 17/04/2025 12:55

SeventeenClovesOfGarlic · 17/04/2025 12:22

So young people today can choose not to be saddled with £60,000 of debt and simply get a grant instead?
When did this change happen?

Grants are vanishingly rare and mainly for postgrads @LadyKenya

they are also very small and perpetuate an increase in fees

Pre making the money from YouTube and tv they made an absolute fortune in tax credits

They started frequently that they didn't claim benefits because they worked (they have a small bakery), but the dad did confirm at one point they got tax credits and didn't class that as benefits

Even child benefit (which isn't capped) for the 9 or so under 18s they have is £160 a week.

LadyKenya · 17/04/2025 13:04

Ok, I understand now. Thank you to the posters who have explained how the loan scheme works.

Finallydoingit24 · 17/04/2025 13:05

They are millionaires now clearly. They bought three porches in three years and got fined for doing 52 mph in a 40 and refusing to say who was driving (presumably because whoever it was already had multiple points on their license). Total wastes of space.

I was 14 and my husband 17 when we met .
I can categorically tell you he did not groom me .
You are judging this man on the man he is now not the man he was at 17 . It was different times
Pre internet .multiple tv channels and mobile phones .
A 17 and 13 year old today are in no way similar to a 17 and 13 year old of 30 years ago.

Disclaimer ~ just my opinion.

Why are they not the same as 30 years ago precisely? Has brain chemistry changed in humans since then or something? She was 13 when she got pregnant by him. He is nearly five years older than her. I am a little younger than them but was still a teen in the 90s and believe me that shit was frowned on and anyone who thinks otherwise has selective memory.

It might have been different times, but a 17 year old having sex with a 13 year old was breaking the law as a 13 year old cannot consent. That has been the law since 1885.

They didn't meet at 14 and 17. They met as children and had their first baby at 14 and 18.

Even back then a 17 year old having sex with a 13 year old is completely inappropriate.

He'd known her since she was a child, which smacks of grooming

LetsWatchTheFlowersGrow · 17/04/2025 13:36

I think the older girls have babies at 19 or so simply because it’s the one time their mum gives them so much individual attention, and the first time they’ve felt some sort of recognition and achievement

Fizbosshoes · 17/04/2025 13:40

The sense I got when they first were on TV that she basically loved pregnancy and newborns and lost interest by the time they went to school. They had 15 children then and I was dubious they could meet the needs (practically, emotionally, financially etc) then , let alone 6 more. Possibly harsh but I think they see parent as a title rather than a verb.

The older series were more fly on the wall and always seemed to involve a lot of noise (understandably with that many people) children crying, fighting, or wanting attention. Noel was forever complaining about the cost of stuff despite the fact that a) they were pretty wasteful and bought a new pram for each baby and never handed down clothes or toys, but b) it stands to reason that if you have a family 5 times bigger than average youre going to have massive bills (phones for kids, food bills eating out, going bowling/to the zoo etc....) its not rocket science!

The newer series had made up scripted scenarios, and I didn't watch after the first couple of programmes.

Motherknowsrest · 17/04/2025 13:41

No two people can parent that many children well. It's irresponsible and not fair on the kids. No privacy, no real hobbies, half arsed homework and emotional support.
The odds are that some should have gone to Uni, but the lack of support and ambition means I don't think they have.

ARichtGoodDram · 17/04/2025 13:57

The older series showed them locking their children in bedrooms (by removing door handles) and would absolutely have caused massive outrage now.

The whitewashing that's been done on them is unreal. The companies that fund them with their freebies have zero regard for the welfare of any of the children involved in the show.

The first one that did go to uni was guilted into leaving because she was missed so much.

She went to uni miles from home, then switched to one close to home, and then dropped out completely.

Allseeingallknowing · 17/04/2025 14:10

Sadly, one child was stillborn, so not 22. Some left home and are in their thirties so rarely 21 under one roof to take care of.
The older children seem to lack any motivation to pursue fulfilling careers, one dropped out of Uni, one lasted five minutes in the RAF. One girl is doing well in a hairdressing apprenticeship. The older lads seem to spend most of their time lolling around in their rooms gaming, don’t do much around the house, washing , vacuuming etc. Noel does lots of diy but they aren’t interested and seem incapable of simple tasks, or being independent or resourceful. One episode showed the older children given the challenge of doing a big shop but they seemed clueless. They don’t seem to have many interests or hobbies, eg learning instruments, art, or do things like army cadets, scouts, Brownies, sports etc. Every birthday and Christmas they have mountains of expensive presents, thrown around everywhere , so must be hard to appreciate them They are always off to Disneyworld in addition to having other holidays, some in their motor home.
Must be difficult to keep them all under control, but Noel and Sue seem very laid back, allowing the younger ones to jump all over the furniture and kitchen surfaces.
People wonder how they afford all this, much is made of the fact that they don’t claim benefits and own a bakery, which some children work in. Their tv show plus repeats on several stations is a steady income, plus you tube and other social media . Also there are books including cookery books. Some items are given to them. They have a hot tub, a big, above ground swimming pool
They recently paid for their daughter’s very expensive wedding at which the bride looked very glum!
They have a lot of dogs, too!
How they are today is a far cry from the very first series, when they were strapped for cash, and I warmed to them for how they coped. Now, it all seems greedy and the programme too contrived. I think fame has somewhat spoiled them, but it was inevitable. The same thing happened in Our Yorkshire farm.

Loans are means tested, so if their parents are earning enough to take 24 people to florida they may not be eligible for loans for the full cost.

Didn’t the rule change on entitlement to family allowance, so that they would not all be eligible?

I don't think a tax credit is the same as family allowance/child benefit, but I could be wrong.

ARichtGoodDram · 17/04/2025 14:48

The two child benefit cap only applies to children born after the date of it, so they'd have stayed eligible for all their children until they aged out (they wouldn't have been able to add more but wouldn't have lost out at the time). The cap also doesn't apply if there are any disabilities on a claim nor claiming for any childcare costs.

It also doesn't apply to child benefit at all. You get that for all your children in the age range if you qualify.
