To hate the term ‘unwanted gift’

I see it so often on market place - ‘unwanted gift’ - especially on children’s items. I just think it’s a bit harsh and comes across ungrateful. There’s so many other things you could say (or you know, just sell something without having to explain yourself).

It’s a small thing, but it irks me nonetheless.

I think when people comment this, it’s just to get the assumption that item was just brought and opened. Nicer way to put, rather than unwanted or not needed. “I don’t want it, it’s not good enough for me but you can buy it” I do agree better left blank or brand new/never used.

I read "unwanted gift" as "I pinched it and want to get money for it while sound plausible that I have something quite expensive but unopened"

Maybe I'm cynical.

Yes, definitely this in some cases!

YABU

It's just a term to tell you it's new, but you don't want it.

Odd think to 'hate'

jackiesgirl · 16/04/2025 19:15

I think it’s particularly harsh on Facebook marketplace rather than eBay or Vinted as the person who gifted it might see it

YeezyBreezy · 16/04/2025 19:35

It may just mean they have 2 of the same gift or that the kid got Lego for example when they’re not interested in it so it’s stayed unopened.

toomuchfaff · 16/04/2025 19:59

What'd you prefer?

It explains that it's new, unused, I mean why else would you have something brand new never used?

I always think this. Plus it just sounds so ungrateful.

SouthLondonMum22 · 16/04/2025 20:25

It's just an explanation as to why it hasn't been used. No biggie.

Octavia64 · 16/04/2025 20:27

I don’t think it’s harsh or ungrateful.

i use it as a description. I’ve usually made my kids write a thank you card to granny anyway and explained that she didn’t know they already had one and we can sell it and that’s fine.

kids get so much duplicates.
I got mine ebaying from quite young.

phoenixrosehere · 16/04/2025 20:32

You’re choosing to see it that way when to others that is the exact description of what it is, especially if it is new and someone is selling it for little money.

Some do get suspicious if they see new items sold for very little.

Are you assuming people don’t say thank you when receiving them or are they ungrateful for not holding on to it or giving it to someone else vs selling it?

MyUmberSeal · 16/04/2025 20:35

But if it was a gift and it’s not wanted, then what are we supposed to call it.

DuesToTheDirt · 16/04/2025 20:56

I guess it means, "Unused and brand new," but yes, I wonder if some of these things have been stolen - along with clothes which "don't fit", wouldn't you just return it then?

I sold something last year that was multiple parts. The buyer only really wanted part of it, so I kind of expected she might sell the rest - fair enough, I couldn't be bothered with that. Then some time later I saw it for sale, with the lying description, "Great condition, been in storage for some years." Er, no it hadn't, it had been in MY HOUSE for some years! Grin

sleepfortheweek · 16/04/2025 21:35

Yes ‘New/unopened/never used’ would be fine explanations

or ‘duplicate gift’

I just don’t like the ‘unwanted’ statement. Poor gifts 🤣

Ungrateful when explaining why something is being sold? Really?! You’re going out of your way to be offended here.
