To think there’s no nice way to display / store these toys??

Anyone got any clever IKEA / storage hacks to store these toys? He does play with them every day so need to be accessible but just wondering if anyone’s done anything clever with displaying these. Or should I just give up and accept that it’s going to look untidy for the rest of his childhood - that’s fine too 😂

Hahahaha I had the exact same problem!
I bought a second hand Ikea children's corner desk, which closes of sight to one corner of the bedroom. Next to it (in the now invisable corner) I put a simple open shelving unit and all the hideous plastic stuff is in it. Dc can reach for it, play with it, even on/in the desk and when I come in the room, I only see a white plate which is the back of the desk (this will be covered with cork or wallpaper)
Hope I am making sense with my description. I'll try and add pics.
😀

I’d get a big trunk to put them in

We bought a plain toy box, sanded it down and painted it gloss white. Got some funky lettering to spell his name on the front and shove them all in there

Dizzly · 16/04/2025 17:28

Down the side of the sofa.

Anything that is used daily might as well be out though. We put a couple of bits on top of a kallax. I was more about minimising their footprint than hiding them.

HundredPercentUnsure · 16/04/2025 17:35

An open fronted IKEA unit that fits the toys comfortably on the shelves. Add caster wheels to the base and a panel onto the back.

Then you can spin it around in the day so it is open and the toys are there easy to get in and out for kids. And then when it's time to tidy up, shove them on the shelf and spin the unit around so it looks like a grown up space. I'd do a shaker style panel or add a bit of trim so it looks like any other cupboard or sideboard from that side. And paint it neutral colours.

KittenCatKitteryCatcat · 16/04/2025 17:36

This is what is seen upon entering kids room, but oooo what's behind it😂.
(I sawed one of the back plates that come with the desk in half and screwed them on a bit more to the top and same at the bottom to get more storage room. We only needed one because the other side is to the wall)

It won't be for his entire childhood. They grow out if these fairly quickly and move on to stuff that's easier to hide.
I appreciate that it feels like forever though 😂

SwanOfThoseThings · 16/04/2025 17:39

How about a storage bench or ottoman?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/04/2025 17:41

They're kids' toys to be played with, not a design statement.

Just get a Kallax and some baskets to dump them in at the end of the day.

Calliopespa · 16/04/2025 17:44

I wouldn’t invest too heavily in something specifically for them as he’s likely to move on from them in a few weeks. I know at the time certain toys feel kind of like an extra family member you are going to need an extra burial plot for, but they do move through them fast in hindsight.

I knew someone would say this! I know they’re kids toys to be played with, hence why I said he plays with them every day. It’s absolutely fine to want to make his room a nice, tidy space for him to play and relax in. We just moved house so was just looking for inspiration in case someone has done something very clever with storage that I hadn’t thought of! Tbh the Kallax is probs the answer. We also have an ottoman / toy box

We had a Happy Town Tractor that I think was loved more than us.

If you get the 'long' one, lay it on its side - that way he'll have the top to put things that won't fit in the baskets on it. You could choose some 'prettier' toys for that later on - or a lamp and a board with his most recent artwork on it, that kind of thing.

stayathomer · 16/04/2025 17:53

When eldest dh was young, I bought the coolest ikea storage unit and ended up giving it to my sister! Everything that fit in fit into one compartment and then nothing else fit in! Sometimes real life is just more messy!!!

Bournetilly · 16/04/2025 17:55

I’ve given up trying to hide them, my house is like a toy shop, that’s with 2 toy boxes and a book shelf full of toys. My eldest is 5 now and into smaller toys (lego etc) but I’ve still got all the big toys out for my youngest so there’s more toys than ever. But it’s only for a few years, in my experience once they get to about 4 they are into smaller toys that can be put away.

CrispEater2000 · 16/04/2025 18:06

DP would always put DCs toys away. Usually in cupboards but there was no hiding the bigger stuff.

I always thought the problem with putting them away was they were out of sight out of mind. Tons of stuff that was hardly played with because they were tidied away.

I'd leave them out. It's not permanent and when the time for toys has gone you'll be wishing it was back!

pimplebum · 16/04/2025 18:30

we have a poof we shove everything in , if it doesn’t fit in the poof or in the toy cupboard it gets donated , does he have his own bedroom ?

Lucylongcat · 16/04/2025 18:30

Would a massive wicker chest work?

oakl79 · 16/04/2025 18:43

When dc were small we bought an oke blanket box that matched our living room, all the toys went in there. Added bonus that people could sit on it when they came to visit.

pearbottomjeans · 16/04/2025 18:52

No there’s not. And if they’re not visible, they won’t be played with. As the kid gets bigger, the toys get smaller, so fret not!

OliveWah · 16/04/2025 20:20

Oh my goodness this bring back memories - we had almost the whole of Happy Land when my DDs were small! We gave it all away to my BIL's niece, and the room looked SO empty afterwards!
