Trying to sell anything is impossible

I am doing a big clear out that includes clothes, furniture, all in great condition. Clothes and trainers barely worn, asking very little (around £1 per item) on Facebook marketplace and local pages, no one is interested....piece of furniture, a few years old but absolutely solid, no rips , tears or stains. It would be around £2k new, asking for a little over £100 , no one is interested and only person commenting is saying she knows of a place that MIGHT take it if I don't find a buyer, they'd want it delivered too as I know for a fact they don't collect because I have donated stuff to them before. I've seen other people doing this to countless other sellers, trying to get some money for their items but instead they get asked to donate to this or that. We KNOW that there are tons of places asking stuff for free. There are also tons of people asking things for free and even those waste your time as no shows. Is it too hard to understand that if I am listing for sale is because I want some.mo eye for it? Rant over 😂 at this point I would honestly rather taking it to the skip than suffer more time wasters.

I sell clothes and bags on Vinted

OrigamiOwls · 16/04/2025 14:27

I find Vinted good for postable items, like clothing, bags, shoes. No good for furniture tho.

Pomegranatecarnage · 16/04/2025 14:27

I buy stuff a lot-never haggle and always turn up to collect. It sounds like you have been unlucky.

renovationqueen · 16/04/2025 14:27

Sell all the clothes on Vinted. Any stuff I've put on Marketplace has gone within a few days - maybe your area just isn't good for it.
Take good pictures and be patient.

WaltzingWaters · 16/04/2025 14:27

I’ve been quite lucky selling bits on eBay. I’ve found that more successful than Vinted or marketplace.

hamsterchump · 16/04/2025 14:35

No one buys clothes on fb marketplace, put them on Vinted or do a local car boot sale if you want to get rid of volume in one go.

A lot of people don't want secondhand furniture and there is so much offered for free, especially of large items that would require a van/removal by the council, there's just no market for it.

I'm guessing your 2k item is a sofa? Yeah you'll struggle to give that away because it's too big to be easily moved and they are usually not in as good of condition as people say. You could try it on ebay if it's a good brand that will stand out (Loaf/Sofa.com, etc) and add a delivery quote. If its DFS type of thing then I'd either keep it or give it away to save on waste removal costs.

Pesk17 · 16/04/2025 14:35

Do you need these one pounds for this and that? I just consider it my donation to charity. If I give away a bag of stuff that either a charity shop or I could sell for twenty quid then great, I've donated £20. And I no longer have the bag in my head or any of its contents raking up headspace.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 16/04/2025 14:43

I’ve been more successful on eBay than anywhere else. Facebook marketplace is awful now full of scammers too.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 16/04/2025 15:01

Most people don't have a car you can fit a sofa in or furniture I bet, means less people are looking for second hand unless they can get it delivered

peppermintcrumble · 16/04/2025 15:02

I can’t be doing with the hassle - I just donate things to charity shops instead.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 16/04/2025 15:06

I hear you. We recently moved and had a very good selection of stuff in good condition, including a bed frame, kids bike and other household bits to get rid of.

The charity shops were being too picky about what they would accept, FB marketplace was a non-starter, we have had clothes on vinted/ebay for £1 or £2 an item and they are just not moving. We gave the bed frame away in the end, but even then we had numerous time wasters/ghosters/no-showers.

It was easier to just dump perfectly usuable stuff in the end.

SeventeenClovesOfGarlic · 16/04/2025 15:07

Clothes won't sell on Marketplace, and for furniture it's rare that anyone will want to find and pay someone with a van to carry and transport the furniture.

Easier to buy from a website and have it delivered to their door.

Lovelysummerdays · 16/04/2025 15:14

Vinted For clothes/ shoes. I buy furniture off gumtree but I have a van. Not many people can easily transport furniture so it is cheap. I bought an extending oak dining table with 8 chairs in early good condition for £100 recently. Cost 2.5k new.

CloverPyramid · 16/04/2025 15:20

I sell clothes and accessories on Vinted and never have trouble selling them.

For larger items, I generally find I have to give them away for free. No one is interested in buying things, even at a bargain price. And that’s for small things that could fit in a car, I’d never expect anyone to buy a truly large item.

SpikySausage · 16/04/2025 15:21

post a link OP - sounds nice!

SpikySausage · 16/04/2025 15:23

Vinted for clothes I agree. But personally I take the approach of buying as much as poss second hand (incl furniture, and literally anything else apart from underwear and cosmetics) and then I always give away to charity. This satisfies my environmental and financial and charitable priorities!

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 16/04/2025 15:23

It’s affluenza. People want new and IKEA and Co deliver that. A lot that can’t afford new wouldn’t be seen dead with second hand stuff. Rather go into debt. Bizarre. We are DROWNING in stuff.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/04/2025 15:24

I sell stuff on local fb groups. Never on Marketplace.

They usually sell. Only clothes though.

Savingadime · 16/04/2025 15:26

We are hoping to move this summer so I’ve started big clear outs. Shoes, clothes, bags and anything dog related has gone on Vinted (I’ve sold almost everything). Everything else is being taken to a car boot sale! Cannot be bothered for the stress 😂

Edited

Same.

pearbottomjeans · 16/04/2025 15:33

I’ve literally put stuff outside free today and most of it’s still there - because everyone is trying to get rid of stuff so don’t want my rejects 🤷‍♀️

Facebook is more hassle than it’s worth and I’ve started only giving stuff away delivery only - I will drop it off to you when it suits me and leave it on your doorstep, too many people not showing up to collect, nightmare.

Charity shops are often full.

Vinted is good for toys (made £500 so far since this time last year), baby carriers etc, but had a few bots buying and reselling which pisses me off as I want my treasured baby things to go on to a nice home.

So tip it is! Luckily ours (like most?) is a recycling center.

Hellohelga · 16/04/2025 15:34

Use EBay - far more buyers. I’ve sold quite a bit there.

Yup.

You might want to get some money for your piece of furniture, but it doesn't follow that this is a realistic goal through FB.

I'd probably try and exhaust the supply of charities who might take it before going to the hassle of getting it to a tip though. Unless you have easy access to a van and muscle in which case ignore!

EmeraldRoulette · 16/04/2025 15:51

@Lifeofthepartay British Heart Foundation have furniture shops and will collect from you. They will look at it to see if it's sellable though. It might save you a trip to the tip.

SeventeenClovesOfGarlic · 16/04/2025 15:54

I've seen some nice tables and sofas on FB marketplace but to find a man with a van who has a second man for heavy lifting (who actually shows up) it tends to cost me about £100 at least, if not double, so I'd rather just stick with my own sofa.
If the seller would deliver, someone would take it.
