What does "Parking on premises" mean to you? Air B&B problem ...

Unashamedly posting here for honest opinions, based on the main question in the title

Background is that I'm on holiday with a friend, in an apartment situated in an area where street parking's well known to be almost impossible

We were therefore extremely careful to source a place that actually had it, and checked with the owner before booking that it really was provided - only to find on arrival that it isn't, and all that's available is (non existent) street parking meaning that we hardly dare go anywhere because returning means driving around ( over 2 hours yesterday Sad) in the hope of finding a space

Obviously we've contacted the owner, only to be told we've "misinterpreted it" and street parking counts as being on the premises

So my question is whether or not we were BU to expect what the listing said, and if not what would anyone else do now? What we really want to do is leave the hassle behind and ask Air B&B to sort a refund based on misrepresentation, but I'd welcome thoughts before doing this

In what world is the street “on premises”… ? Two vastly different things IMO. Take it up with Airbnb and let them know it was falsely advertised.

cramptramp · 16/04/2025 11:08

I’d report this to Airbnb as well as leaving a bad review. The owners are CF of the highest order.

GasPanic · 16/04/2025 11:09

I would expect hassle free parking on private land. Not having to do a battle with the general public for spaces, especially if it is in an area known for parking issues.

I would report, for your benefit and everyone elses. I am actually surprised they have gotten away with this so far if parking is such a hassle.

Movinghouseatlast · 16/04/2025 11:09

Phone Air bnb. They can over ride the hosts refund decision, and find you somewhere else to stay.

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 16/04/2025 11:16

I wouldn't let it go OP. It's ruined your holiday and you are in the right. Phone Air BnB.

beAsensible1 · 16/04/2025 11:16

mmmmm its a bit iffy, "on" is probably the contentious word as in London id count street parking as technically available as long as its free.

outside i'd expect a drive or allocated parking for the property. 2 hours is mad was there not a station or paid parking close by?

Superhansrantowindsor · 16/04/2025 11:19

How have previous guests not commented on this? Parking is a deal breaker for me.

Whyherewego · 16/04/2025 11:19

I think it's very clear on premises means off street parking of some description and given you specifically checked the hostel is being very unreasonable
Definitely complain

Espresso25 · 16/04/2025 11:21

Parking on premises means private parking within the curtilage of the property you’re staying. You’ve not misinterpreted anything - they’ve intentionally misled you.

Espresso25 · 16/04/2025 11:21

You can escalate this to Airbnb.

I'm with the BnB. They are the same thing. In the same way that a man in a dress saying he's a woman, is a woman.

Tiswa · 16/04/2025 11:31

FortyElephants · 16/04/2025 11:01

Understandable. If I were you I would contact Airbnb today, explain the situation and ask their agreement to fund the cost of car parking. Then you can drop your friend at the accommodation and walk back from the car park yourself.

This is what I would do

It still wouldn't be 'on premises'!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/04/2025 10:35

Yes, that would make sense

As I mentioned the on-street parking is well known to be a major problem round here, so many do indeed travel without a car. However for mobility reasons this wasn't an option for us, which as said all formed part of the care we took in checking

Mobility problems?

Does one of your party suffer from what could be recognised as a disability?

If the answer is "Yes" then make the most of that fact in your complaint to Air B'n'B and to the owners.

Service providers can't discriminate against people with a disability and I would say that lying about misrepresenting the parking situation amounted to discrimination if it led you to enter into this agreement on false pretences when you would not have done so if you had known the true facts.

If you get no satisfaction from a complaint nothing to stop you issuing a money claim against the owners for any extra costs you incurred or loss of enjoyment of the holiday.

jolota · 16/04/2025 11:36

I'd be very unamused, parking on the premises obviously does not equal on street parking!
Very frustrating for you and I hope you can get some compensation.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned it in the reviews, but perhaps they've only recently advertised parking or others haven't needed it.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 16/04/2025 11:41

This would infuriate me. When we stay in touristy/busy places we look for an AirBnB with parking included because I don't want to be driving around looking for a space. I would expect an allocated space or private drive.

The owner is a cheeky fucker. I would definitely leave a bad review

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 16/04/2025 11:43

BaronessBomburst · 16/04/2025 10:03

Parking on the premises means on private land, owned by the Air B&B. The street is not their premises.

Exactly this. Public car parks or on street parking are neither therefore it shouldn’t be advertised as such and I’d be complaining to Airbnb if the owner is claiming you’ve misinterpreted their listing.

SnoozingFox · 16/04/2025 11:43

No - parking on premises means private parking. Either a dedicated spot for your apartment or a car park for a block where it's first come, first served.

The street outside is NOT part of the premises or owned by the house so therefore cannot be "on the premises". Absolutely complain. I always filter apartments by parking because like you I want that convenience.

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/04/2025 11:50

Of course it's wholly unacceptable. Not really sure why you're checking OP? It couldn't be more of a YANBU. Do whatever the full scale of the complaint procedure involves.

beAsensible1 · 16/04/2025 11:51

FortyElephants · 16/04/2025 11:32

It still wouldn't be 'on premises'!

i mean technically, but they can argue they meant parking available and it amounts to the same.

i'd let airbnb adjudicate because its an iffy one (to me)

terracelane23 · 16/04/2025 11:54

I would take parking on the premises to mean an allocated or private parking space - not street parking. Sounds like you should complain.

user1492757084 · 16/04/2025 11:55

Take them at their word and park behind the gates.

ie: Park on their garden.

StealthyBMI · 16/04/2025 11:55

Haven't RTFT but I host on AirBNB and there are two options we have selected for parking 'Free on-street parking' and 'Free parking on premises' - ie. Park on the drive or on the road. If they mean street parking, that's the option they should have selected.

Copied the screen grab from my listing but I doubt it will post so let me know if you want me to try again.

Espresso25 · 16/04/2025 11:55

OP - I’m a host and was curious - these are the options for free parking on premises. Clearly not for on street parking.
