AIBU to expect a metal ikea bedframe to last more than 1 year?

I purchased a metal ikea bedframe in June 2021 for my guest room, its been used maybe 40 nights since then. I have a friend coming to stay for Easter and was cleaning the room in advance and went to move the bed, the leg on one side bent and when I went to move it back into place it came off completely in my hand. From what I can see a tiny bit of metal internally holding it together failed.

I duly dug out the receipt and contacted ikea hoping to get a replacement part , sent them photos etc. I was told the bed is no longer in stock and no replacement parts available. I asked what they could do for me as I assume the lifetime of a metal bed is longer than 3 years 10 months and I was told they couldn’t do anything as the warranty on bed frames is only 1 year. I asked if they could direct me to where that is stated on the website or elsewhere and I got fobbed off.

I have another metal ikea bed in my house that is in daily use and going strong after a decade, so I think my issue is a manufacturing fault but I’m disappointed that ikea will only stand behind their products for such a short period of time.

Caveat emptor I guess but AIBU to expect a bedframe to last a long time?

That does sound rubbish for a spare bed. Mine is metal (not Ikea but can’t remember where from!) and it’s 18 years old and just starting to look like it might need changing soon

Thanks OP, I was planning on treking to IKEA this weekend to buy a new bed but will look at other options if they are only standing by them for a year. Had a look at their guarantee section and they just leave out the part about bed frame guarantees only being 1 year https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/customer-service/returns-claims/guarantee/

We are confident in the quality of our products and many items are covered by guarantees and warranties. These start on the day of purchase. See more here.

I don’t know what your budget is so apologies if it’s out the price range but I’ve heard good things about get laid beds
I’ve not seen any others with an 11 year guarantee and they’re solid wood, I’ve narrowed it down to them from my long list of options!

Wish I could remember where the one I have is from as it’s been great

YANBU although my wooden John Lewis bedframe started breaking after a couple of years too, and I was thinking of going back to IKEA!

I had a poor experience with Get Laid beds about five years ago. Ordered a bed and it arrived missing several different parts, which they said would take weeks to replace and re-send so we cancelled the order. The parts that did arrive didn't look especially sturdy either. They may have got better since then, but there's a bit of chatter on Reddit that suggests they might not have done.

You could try complaining through Moneysavingexpert's Resolver service, which is good at directing your complaint to someone who will take it seriously.

Also look at their advice on consumer rights. Your argument is that it's not reasonable for a bed that's only used occasionally to break after 3 years. We have a metal frame IKEA bed that's 20 years old and it's still as new.

But we have found they've been OK on guarantees, we've has a mattress replaced after a few years also a leaking tap, but they both had much longer guarantees although that's not relevant as you still have consumer rights which trump shop guarantees.

I'm on the fence, it depends how much you paid, quality, it didn't just break you broke it off by dragging it accross the floor.

If you didn't drag it or cause the fault and it was a good quality product with a corrisponding price then YANBU.

We have a small double, cheap Arogs, I dragged it and that bent the leg, luckily it didn't come off and has lasted 8yrs so far. But if I dragged it again it would probably snap off.

Lots of recommendations for good quality wood beds, does anyone have a similar recommendation for a metal bed? I obviously don't want to go with IKEA if they think the lifetime of them will be so short

BlondeMummyto1 · 16/04/2025 13:15

Sounds like you bought cheap so I wouldn’t expect anything.

I’m also looking at the original bed company if that helps
