Stop talking about my child!

I got in a lift today.

A woman & her baby got in too. (Maybe 9-12 2 months, I don't know.

The child kept waving at me and laughing.

So I started waving back and just said, awh she's adorable and so friendly.

The lady just barked at me "Stop talking about my child!"

Forgot about it until now and doesn't really bother me but just curious if there's something I'm unaware of and should I not have interacted. It was just weird. What did I do wrong?

Nah, she was just weird.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 15/04/2025 23:14

Who knows what is going on with the woman. It's a perfectly natural thing to do, don't take it to heart.

Saphire123 · 15/04/2025 23:14

She sounds odd. It's a natural reaction to respond to a friendly child.

QuickPeachPoet · 15/04/2025 23:15

Oh dear. Silly girl sounds a bit unhinged.
You did nothing wrong! I would say the same about a cute kid or dog.

Seachanger · 15/04/2025 23:16

Well if she didn't like you interacting with her child you've got to worry about the little ones future development if her mother isn't going to allow little innocent exchanges like this.

Pinkdreams · 15/04/2025 23:16

There’s a possibility she has depression? I get stopped numerous times a day due to my DD and I think it’s sweet I’d never bark at anyone for commenting on her in a positive way

Sonolanona · 15/04/2025 23:19

I always smile, wave, make silly faces at babies and toddlers. Most parents are happy that you are noticing their gorgeous children ! I think you just happened to meet someone a bit odd!

DoYouReally · 15/04/2025 23:19

Cool thanks. Not taking it to heart and didn't see anything wrong with it.

Just found it odd and unnecessary.

Child was such a happy little one, just enjoying herself waving away and laughing.

At least the kiddo doesn’t take after her grumpy mother 🤣🤣🤣

She is totally weird. Poor child. I had a full on chat with a kid in a trolley in Tesco last week, he started the convo! His Mum was lovely. Poor wee thing as this will discourage their natural interactions with others 🥲

DoYouReally · 15/04/2025 23:26

My OH thought maybe she was trying to settle the child to get them to sleep or something (he's a voice of reason type!) but this child wasn't anywhere near sleeping. Full of life and no signs of tiredness.

I'm not a people person outside of work but my toddler is absolutely a people person! Sometimes internally I do be a bit urrrrgh when someone stops to talk to him and I just want to get on with whatever I'm doing but I would never let on because I know ds enjoys the interaction and people are just being polite. So I just smile and go through the small talk motions. Maybe she was just having a really bad day or maybe she had a bad experience with someone overstepping or being creepy and is now overly sensitive to it.

Montea · 15/04/2025 23:27

maybe she was on her period or something

TwinklyNight · 16/04/2025 08:59

It was her being weird not you.
