Partner’s mood two days after drinking

Firsttimemum02 · 15/04/2025 19:11

Has anyone else ever experienced this?

-Partner goes out drinking on a Saturday (say 4/5 pints)
-He is not too bad on the Sunday in terms
of hangover/mood
-Mood drops on Monday and is really bad tempered/argumentative by the evening

It is like there’s a two day lag on the after effects. I’ve pointed this out to him (trend after he has had quite a lot to drink) but he says it’s impossible it’s linked to him drinking and must be something else.

Any thoughts welcome! It’s happened too often now to be anything else IMO

Sounds like he’s drinking way more than he’s telling you, or it’s drugs.

OwlBasket · 15/04/2025 19:15

Bet it’s coke

Firsttimemum02 · 15/04/2025 19:19

There’s been times I’ve been with him when he’s drunk and definitely no drugs involved

Sounds like Coke

WhichPage · 15/04/2025 19:26

Could be messing with blood sugars or sleep, energy levels or he is drinking more than he says of on Sundays too but imo totally possible whatever the mechanism that this pattern is …. exactly what you think it is. Not in his interest so see it though, is it?

ToBeOrNotToBee · 15/04/2025 19:28

This sounds like a coke come down.

Rosie8880 · 15/04/2025 19:29

The first day he’s likely tired/low energy/still a bit pissed - too low energy to muster any moods. Second day it’s hangxiety. Only way to avoid it - drink less. Take breaks of 3-4 weeks from drinking altogether. Pending how old he is - age will play a role in making what we’re once managerable hangovers into poor productivity, low mood, etc

Speckyfourfries · 15/04/2025 19:30

It's 100 percent drugs.
2 to 3 days and you get the rattle

CurlewKate · 15/04/2025 19:38

If he’s a regular drinker 4 pints isn’t going to have this effect. He’s either 🧑‍⚕️ bling a lot more than he’s telling you, or it’s something unrelated. Or most likely as others have said it’s drugs.

mindutopia · 15/04/2025 19:48

Yes, it’s perfectly normal. Recovering alcoholic here, proper withdrawal often hits 48-72 hours after and can actually last days. The acute withdrawal symptoms of a hangover happen within hours. But not the insomnia, irritability, depression or (if physically addicted), things like seizures. These happen later. It’s why people can swear off alcohol but then cave on day 2 or 3 or 4 when they are feeling grumpy. It doesn’t have to be drugs (though could be that too).

Firsttimemum02 · 15/04/2025 20:13

Thanks all. I’m confident there is no drugs involved but understand the suggestion.

The reply about blood sugar levels is interesting, he has many times said he has shown the symptoms of being diabetic (type 1) - but never mentioned mood swings being one, which sounds like it is ?

You shouldn't be having to give a second thought to someone's drinking and their moods. I think he drinks more than you realise.

CurlewKate · 15/04/2025 20:41

@Firsttimemum02Whatever the truth of it, you shouldn’t have to be managing his moods. It’s up to him. He’s an adult.

Onlywhenilaff · 15/04/2025 21:01

Maybe he just hates Mondays?

One binge of alcohol isn’t causing mood swings 2 days later. Those ten units have left the building by the next morning. And alcohol is a depressant.

When I was very young and occasionally did small amounts of drugs, comedowns happened. It’s definitely drugs. Or he hates Mondays.

🤔He is definitely taking you for a ride. You just don’t know what sort of ride it is.
