What places in the UK have weirded you out - part two

I have started another thread, as the topic is so interesting.

West Bay felt very weird to me. We went after watching Broadchurch. I think it’s partly the strange mix of architecture. The cliff falls are also creepy. There are signs on the beach warning you to stay away from the cliffs.

We took kids to a campsite in Cambridgeshire fens. As we drove into the village I tried to push down my feeling of unease but my eldest said straight away that it was very spooky and she didn't want to stay. Things got worse from there and we didn't stay

Jelliots · 15/04/2025 22:35

Newcastle - it’s a weird one for me because on one hand I feel like I belong there in some way - but on the other hand I feel a strong sense of depression when I’m there. No idea why. Very first time I went I seemed to know my way around instinctively so I’m pretty sure I was a geordie in a past life 😂

Eastie77Returns · 15/04/2025 22:44

Endured a terrible weekend in Middlesbrough. I was reluctantly attending a family member’s wedding (long story) which didn’t help but the moment I arrived I felt unnerved. Very odd vibe and the town centre felt oppressive with a vague air of menace. I stayed near the university as someone told me the area around there was safer but I didn’t feel that at all. Almost cried with relief when I got in the car to drive back home.

Nunney, near Frome - pretty and traditional English village but feels a bit odd and dark, even on sunny days and I can't quite put my finger on it. Have been a few times and each time I feel uncomfortable. The church is creepy too.

Yes, Nunney does have a slightly weird vibe. It never seems to be warm there.
See also Shepton Mallet - distinctly strange vibe all over, especially near the Cannard's Grave side of town.

SunnyCoco · 15/04/2025 22:56

Funny how we have such different feelings about the same places

I totally love Manchester, last time I went I felt a huge sense of relief like I'd come home.

Bishops Stortford was insanely depressing and heavy.

And Bristol makes me feel so pissed off and angry 🤣

The weirdest though was a village in Kent, visually pretty but completely creepy and felt like it didn't really exist and I'd never be able to find it again if I tried.

I'm from Cardiff, I don't live there any more, but honestly I can't relate to anything you've said. It's a great city.

To each their own! I think that we’re all probably biased about our home city though.

@Moonlightdust
I don't want to be outing but, in a nutshell, numerous sightings of dark figures, seemingly as solid as you or I, going through walls or gradually fading away to nothing. Seen by more than one person at the same time (guests, cleaning teams for example). Lots of noises like someone running down a deserted corridor, or a sound like something crashing to the ground in an empty room (nothing out of place though). Several sightings of a 'grey lady'. The freakiest bit was when she spoke about seeing someone she thought was a guest in costume in a staff only area so spoke to her and she turned round and had no face as such, just a featureless face (although she said she weirdly felt afterwards that she did have a face but couldn't remember it). I actually know this person quite well and she's very down to earth usually.

Coombe Abbey is notoriously said to be haunted , plays up to the image a bit and it's definitely quite gothic in its style. I can't say I've ever experienced anything weird there myself.....but I wouldn't fancy staying the night!

That’s so creepy! The footsteps above us were so loud; constant stomping back and forth all night long. We thought it strange a guest would be pacing in their room and so heavily. We slept with the lights on (I say slept as neither of us actually got any sleep!)

I really want to go to Dungeness. Quite like flat landscapes - love the land between Ormskirk and Southport for those big sky views, especially in winter.

I love the Moss too

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 15/04/2025 17:19

What a truly horrible comment. Aberdeen does have a specific accent but was/is the oil centre of Scotland and used to many different people who speak in many different accents. So you choose to diss an entire city because you can't make out what some people say?
And I'm not aberdonian nor from the north of Scotland

It’s not a horrible comment at all. Not understanding or being understood can be unnerving. That’s not “dissing” the city, just OP’s experience. Other experiences are no doubt available

onetwothreefourfive11 · 15/04/2025 23:30

Blackburn and Weston super mare

just a very cheap weird chavvy vibe

Jibberjabba · 15/04/2025 23:32

Centre parks at sherwood, felt v claustrophobic and heavy and I adore being in woodland so my feelings were completely out of character

UnctuousUnicorns · 15/04/2025 23:38

"The weirdest though was a village in Kent, visually pretty but completely creepy and felt like it didn't really exist and I'd never be able to find it again if I tried."

Funny, that's exactly what I said about Llangollen earlier in the thread.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 16/04/2025 00:10

I have a recurring dream that I’m in a house with very very high ceilings and I know I shouldn’t be there. The house looms over the trees outside very weird.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 16/04/2025 00:24

this thread is taking me ages to read as I’m looking up all the places mentioned even the motorways !!

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 16/04/2025 00:32

The pontins jersey one is very eerie especially the abandoned swimming pool.

KatMansfield6 · 16/04/2025 00:56

MoonWoman69 · 15/04/2025 17:42

Oh I so agree with this! What the hell is it?! We sometimes go through on the motorbike to get to the A59, which I also find parts of eerie and it has an odd vibe around there!

Yes! I used to drive over blubber houses late at night on my own and would get really spooked. Only place that has happened to me while driving.

OldCottageGreenhouse · 16/04/2025 01:03

@EminybobSaltburn is beautiful! You must’ve gone out of season because it’s packed when the weather is nice. Fab place for kids

OldCottageGreenhouse · 16/04/2025 01:06

piscofrisco · 15/04/2025 07:01

The Fens. Particularly the area below Peterborough and above Huntingdon. DH and I drive through it a few weeks back and we both felt overwhelmingly depressed until we got back on the A1 and further south. No idea why.

Lincolnshire was home to over 150 RAF airfields during WW2 and the remains of many of them can still be found in places. The area you’re describing had a fair few airfields with a sad history.

A house in Alford, near Skegness.
Too long to type out on my phone, but went once when I was about 4 with my mum and grandparents, and apparently screamed the place down and again when I was 19 and it still felt as bad.

I live near here would love to know where it was!

cocoloco23 · 16/04/2025 03:14

Lots of people on the first thread mentioned Camden (although I can’t tell if it was because of a weird vibe or if they just don’t like it!).

I worked in an office inside Camden market for a year, and for various reasons, I had to work there at night when the building was empty. It was an old stables (almost 150 years old) and I definitely wasn’t alone in there at night. There were all sorts of weird noises, and I felt like I was being watched when I had to walk through the building to go to the loo. I smelled burning more than once, and saw shadows moving where there wasn’t anything that could have caused it.

This was just as we were going into lockdown and it was a very strange time anyway. Very dark memories.

Tryinghardtobefair · 16/04/2025 03:30

Crediton, Devon. Almost everyone is related by marriage or by blood. It just feels as if they're all going to go a bit Hot Fuzz on you

Wastwater in the Lake District (which I otherwise love), there is something about the 'lighting' of that lake, the way sounds.....well, sound.... the stillness of it....I feel a really heavy feeling there and always refuse to get out of the car 😁

wastwater is an odd place. I remember going as a child and my mum telling me about Margaret Hogg, a woman who was murdered by her husband 1976 and dumped in the lake, found 8 years later perfectly preserved (thanks mum😂) also in the late 90s 3 divers died there too. It’s also the deepest lake in England.

My mum really had the heebie jeebies at Wastwater, probably not helped by the lady in the lake story.

it definitely has a nasty vibe

I’m similar; 15 mins away but I only ever hear bad things about it from those I talk to so in the many years I’ve been here I haven’t ventured there once. Google street view tells me all I need to know.
Shame, as there was a large Gurkha presence there before the military moved out- Nepalese are amongst the best people I’ve ever met.

Have the Gurkhas gone now as well? I know they stayed down for a while after everyone else had moved to Colchester.

I was flashed in Manor Park on the way home from school when I was about 10. I never actually told my parents because I wasn't supposed to go through there on my own. That day I found out why! I always hated that whole road in front of the park/football stadium though. It didn't feel safe. The bit where we lived was fine though - army estate. And I loved my primary school.
Apparently there's a Travelodge in Aldershot now. I know people still go for Airborne Forces Day but I can't imagine who would want to stay there the rest of the year!

I was just coming here to say Wastwater! It’s a very creepy place.

I spent some time in the 80s in Aldershot as a kid as my dad was Army. Left early 90s.

Been there a few times since but not for atleast 15 years. The town had changed a lot. My dad visited it last year and said how unrecognisable it was.

We lived in a block of flats for some of that time , long gone now. When did you live there? Do you remember the big Duke of Wellington statue near the woods? As a kid I find it quite eerie !

I was born there! 1983. We moved to Northern Ireland in 1988(?) then back to Aldershot in 1991.
I definitely know the Wellington statue but the woods I found really creepy were the ones next to our estate, by the railway line. At the top is Redan Hill with the big canon. Being creeped out didn't stop us playing in them though 😅. My friend and I got caught cutting through them on the way home from secondary school once - by her dad who she hadn't realised was coming home on leave that day. She got a massive bollocking and for the next two weeks her mum walked us halfway to school to make sure we went the long way round. Luckily they never told my mum or I'd have been dead meat.
