What places in the UK have weirded you out - part two

I have started another thread, as the topic is so interesting.

West Bay felt very weird to me. We went after watching Broadchurch. I think it’s partly the strange mix of architecture. The cliff falls are also creepy. There are signs on the beach warning you to stay away from the cliffs.

Rothesay Castle dungeon did odd things to me. I was down there alone and suddenly got the feeling I was not very much not alone. I know dungeons are never going to be the most cheerful places but they never usually have that effect on me. All I knew is I had to get out of there quickly. The rest of Rothesay and Bute was lovely.
I also felt very depressed in Cheltenham but I can’t pinpoint why.

AnraithAgusCeapaireLeDoThoil · 15/04/2025 16:05

I was coming on to say Glastonbury, but see the original thread already mentioned it along with Bath! I didn't dislike Glastonbury tbh, just found it quite a weird place. I lived in Bath when I visited Glastonbury so maybe I was a bit immune to some of the weirdness. We visited Bath again recently and found it a strange mix of very upmarket and then a lot of quite grimy parts. I couldn't get over the rats! They are bold as brass in Bath. I live near London and don't think I've even seen a rat in London, so it really surprised me that they were just scurrying about in the middle of the day when we went to Bath. Maybe London is so polluted the rats don't even like it, so that's totally fine 😂

Murfmeister · 15/04/2025 16:06

A house in Alford, near Skegness.
Too long to type out on my phone, but went once when I was about 4 with my mum and grandparents, and apparently screamed the place down and again when I was 19 and it still felt as bad.

towelonfloor · 15/04/2025 16:09

Camber sands

Camber Sands is a weird one. the beach is beautiful but I also find if you drive down the single road parts can look quite post apocalyptic. I think it's because it's so flat.

Regarding Stoke on Trent I forgot to add I did feel a creepy vibe around Hanley Bus station, but that might be because it is minging. And the rats around that end of Hanley are huge! I'm not exaggerating when I say large guinea pig size excluding the tail! Not to mention that horrible Unity House, urghh. But more because just ugly than any vibes.

the bus station’s new and Unity House has gone.

i was coming on to say Lud’s Church

Glad to have found this second thread, thanks OP! The first one and now this second make such interesting reading.

Sorry to the poster on the previous thread I spooked with my rural East Devon experience! 😬 I wanted to reply before but got distracted reading the rest of the thread. Wanted to say I have also had similar recurrent dreams to the one you described where there is an unused extended part of the house that was eerie and menacing. Very probably triggered by the experiences at that isolated rural house.

As a household we are Christian but we are a mixed faith wider family with some atheist and agnostic but both those with and without faith saw stuff there and felt oppression, including the woman in the bedroom I mentioned before. On one occasion all of us in the house saw the same thing at the same time, a black shadow in the form of a large cat but bigger, around twice the size with a very long extended tail. In broad daylight, in the corner of the kitchen. We prayed against it and it leapt up onto the counter, out the window and vanished and another cat-like black shadow followed close behind. All of us who were there witnessed it.

We found some strange artefacts in the garden that surrounded the property, there was a very old orchard, quite wild/ overgrown. Strange ceramic charms and objects made from twisted grass or hay near or attached to the trees. We found an old well that had been covered and was completely overgrown, that felt sickening and creepy. There were ribbons tied around some of the trees, possibly wassailing practice. We removed things we felt were not good but sometimes things would reappear a few months later. No idea who would do this as the house was so remote and hidden away down a tiny private access lane.

Nighttime was the worst, did not have a single night of peace there, got to the point I just slept on the floor in the same room as my family as did not want to be alone with the things. One came out of the wall over my bed once, it had the face of a person I knew. I was lying down and it loomed out over me, fixed an awful wide eyed stare then disappeared back into the wall. Horrendous. Wasn’t even the middle of the night just early evening. Could not wait to leave that place. It felt like a spiritual highway, things coming and going constantly, like the walls were made of glass and many unfriendly eyes watching. There was a supposed intersection of ley lines in that location. It felt like we were on ‘their’ turf.

Driving down the Acle Straight (the last section of the A47 from Acle in Norfolk to Great Yarmouth.) The scenery is so flat and monochrome and doesn't seem to change, so you feel like you aren't really getting anywhere, it's eerie. Endless windmills and drainage ditches as far as the eye can see. There never seems to be any sunlight.

Apparently, the road is haunted, but I've never seen anything of the sort, it just felt odd while on it.

MyKingdomForACat · 15/04/2025 16:24

I might have said this on a similar thread but there is a road a stone’s throw from where I live in SE London that I can’t get out of quick enough. Try to avoid as much as possible. It feels oppressive and hot and it has too many houses but it’s really quiet. I find it very odd

Carolynpig · 15/04/2025 16:27

Dundrum castle and surrounding area, particularly around the river bridge. As a child I felt terribly sad there and wanted to cry. I would love to visit now as an adult but live too far away.

Picle · 15/04/2025 16:32

Salisbury Cathedral. Friend and I had a strange time loss experience there and were both weirded out by it.

Also the A30 leading away from Salisbury. Feels unsafe and dark, even on a clear bright day.

mrlistersgelfbride · 15/04/2025 16:33

Rawtenstall and Helmshore in Lancashire.
I'm from a shit part of the north west but they were rough and very backwards. It felt like country bumpkin mixed with people who wanted to glass you.
I d
I find some Somerset villages quite eery, cheddar gorge was odd.

Agree with Whitby, not so much scarey but very over rated.

God yes. I had to drive that road daily for a year and got a really weird feeling from it too.

ThisWOMANWontWheesht · 15/04/2025 16:36

I also forgot to mention... the M50. Sounds stupid but it's the most awful, neglected-feeling road. I used to have to use it quite often to visit MIL. It's never busy and I never felt safe in it.
Apparently a young pregnant mother was murdered there in the 80's though I did know that till after I had felt my ill-at-easeness there!

mathanxiety · 15/04/2025 16:47

Aldgate in London circa 1986 and Holyhead in Wales in the late 70s. I felt as if I had entered a portal to another dimension in both places.

mathanxiety · 15/04/2025 16:48

@Picle
Time loss experience! That's the phrase I needed.

Weirdedoot · 15/04/2025 16:51
  1. I have the dream with the house with the "secret/deserted" rooms that are terrifying. The rest of the house is my dream house. Sometimes I go in to the deserted areas and as I open the door to the room I get pulled in by an invisible force.
  1. Glasgow Central is a square with an upper and lower level so fairly straightforward to navigate but as a previous poster mentioned there is a whole underground section that is pretty spooky and many people have claimed to see ghosts. Recently someone claims to have captured an image of a ghost whilst on a tour of the old Victorian platform below the modern station. The Central Hotel which is attached to the station is also reported to be haunted. There were so many suicides on the seventh floor of the hotel it has been completely closed for decades.
  1. My own weirded oot place is Culzean Castle in Ayrshire. Apparently as a toddler my parents tried to visit this castle several times but each time I would become so distressed that I'd vomit and they'd have to turn the car around. Never even made it to the car park. I've not tried to go as an adult and as far as Scottish castles go the ghostly tales around Culzean aren't that bad. I wonder if I had a run in with the Kennedy Clan in a former life. 🤣😁
Catrionablocke · 15/04/2025 16:52

I don't get these feelings very often and can't remember bad ones but I did have a really lovely one in 2019.
I was on the isle of Iona and went into St.Oran's chapel on my own. It was so quiet in there and as I stood there I was overwhelmed with a good feeling. I felt like someone who loved me was with me and was looking after me. It was such a profound feeling that I didn't want to leave. I don't know who it was, but someone was with me.
I am interested in church architecture and have been in many churches and cathedrals but never felt like that. Maybe it was God or a friendly monk or one of my dead relatives.

towelonfloor · 15/04/2025 16:54

I liked West Bay, didn't like the cliff but I dislike any cliff.

I haven't seen the original post about recurring dreams, but your post just gave me the shivers. A nightmare I used to have a lot was of a house, different houses sometimes, with secret rooms. Those rooms were utterly terrifying, just the most oppressive haunted feelings came from them. So much so that I don't really like being alone in houses now!
I have no idea why the dreams started, haven't had one in a while.

TheGlitterFairy · 15/04/2025 17:01

Thanks for the second thread; I went to post on the first and it was full!

Had an experience near Padstow in a cottage. The atmosphere was v oppressive and charged. Swear there was some sort of spirit / energy watching me for the duration of our stay. It felt very hostile. I felt claustrophobic and panicked the entire time I stayed there which is not like me at all, in addition to having nightmares which I also never have. Safe to say I won’t be returning and felt very pleased to pack up and leave. Awful vibe.

I can be a bit woo with places / houses etc but haven’t felt this bad with one in a long time. Scared me shitless tbh. Does now even thinking about it.

I hope people get the point a bit more with this thread and don't just name towns they don't like 😂
I haven't actually been to any but I love looking up abandoned places like old theme parks and Pontins sites on Google Earth and exploring them that way. I sometimes then Google old pictures (like postcards) of them.
I get an odd feeling of sadness of the lives been and gone of people who spent time there.
That's a bit weird isn't it 😂

Oooh I do exactly this kind of thing!

JudgeJ · 15/04/2025 17:10

CalleOcho · 15/04/2025 12:01

Thread 1 will be my late night read tonight in bed!

My weird places are:

Piccadilly Gardens and Market Street, Manchester - was a student in MCR 10 years ago, and I would always feel overstimulated and unsafe round that side of town.

Peak District - specifically Woodhead Pass A628, feels really eerie.

Woodhead an!d Snake Pass used to be my favourite roads to drive although when I was little I thought the Snake Pass was covered in snakes, I would keep my eyes closed all the way. Luckily as an adult I stopped doing that!
A lot of posts on there 2 threads aren't finding places weird, they're just places people didn't like

SunsetCocktails · 15/04/2025 17:13

@Shovealoadon did your family sell the house in the end? Wonder who lives there now?

I quite like looking at those Urban exploration videos on youtube. I don't do any urban exploring like that myself but I find abandoned places fascinating. Especially when it's a building that's just been left as it is and abandoned, although that often means a sad back story, it's also fascinating in a morbid sort of way. It's a bit mawkish of me I guess.

I love doing this too, I find old asylums and hospitals etc fascinating (we have quite a few abandoned asylums near where I live). After I got into checking them out on Google, I drove to a local asylum (board fencing all around the front of it separating it from a housing estate) and I 'accidentally on purpose' drove into the grounds via an overgrown lane round the back. Found myself looking at the sad old buildings, water tower and smashed up orangery, and one of the smaller buildings must have still been in use for something because someone was standing in the window looking out. I totally freaked out and had to do a fifty point turn in the little lane to get back out! I didn't care if the tree branches scratched the car, I had to get out 😆 I'll stick to Google exploring from now on!

Mothership4two · 15/04/2025 17:18

Whenever I go to Greator Rocks on Dartmoor it feels really 'off'. Gives me Picnic at Hanging Rock vibes. Once something odd happened there. It's quite close to Jay's Grave, which doesn't 'weird me out' at all.
