I was living in a women’s refuge facility and was abused by a man who was employed by them. I was vulnerable at the time having just fled an abusive relationship. He gaslighted and manipulated me into a sexual relationship when I finally told my key worker what was happening he blocked me on everything. The organisation have finally held themselves accountable for employing a male that had contact with vulnerable women.

Am I eligible for compensation? How would I go about finding out?

Why do you think you should get compensation? What did the refuge, the organisation, do wrong? Presumably they didn’t know what the man was like. He is obviously a swine, and it shouldn’t have happened, but you getting compensation won’t change that. It would just make the refuge, or whoever funds it, poorer.

Of course he blocked you on everything. Once you told his employer, he’d have been in trouble with them and told to have no more contact with any of the women in the refuge.

The refuge will have rules for all staff to follow regarding relationships with the women staying there. The guys will no doubt be fired for breaching his contract. It only really becomes criminal if he abused you in some way though; did he?

It sounds like a consensual relationship; you went along with it so would they pay compensation? Or did he attack you?

If your relationship was consensual as it sounds it was as you said he gaslighted you into a sexual relationship then you are being highly unreasonable. Take responsibility for yourself and your actions and move forwards and learn from it.

It sounds like he did take advantage of his position but it also sounds like The Refuge behaved appropriately when it cam to light so I am not sure why you would be eligible for compensation
Also, would you really want to take money away from an organisation set up to help vunerable women?

Did you lend him or give him money during this relationship ? I think that when you “go for compensation” you need to prove a financial loss like medical fees but I am not a lawyer.

Also why are you suing the refuge who sounds like they acted quickly rather than the man?

They employed a man in a women's refuge. I have worked in many, men aren't even allowed to visit for education classes (the reason I was there). I couldn't have got a lift from my DH, no man gets the address.

Basic safety. Most people don't know what men will do to gain access. Count yourselves lucky if you don't.

I personally wouldn’t seek compensation from a charity but I would expect him to be nowhere near vulnerable women in future, hopefully he has lost his job.

There is so much poor advice legal and otherwise on this thread. Please go and see a solicitor. An employer can be held vicariously liable for the actions of their employee and you do not need to show financial loss in this type of action. However a solicitor will go through the full details of what happened, when and how and be able to advise whether there is any cause of action. Don't be put off by people saying not to take money from a charity. They will have insurance that covers such issues.

Fair enough, but the one I know does employ a man, useful for deterring unwanted (male) visitors.

They do. There are some sheltered accommodations for women I used to be a mental health support worker in and they had male staff.

If their safeguarding measures failed and he was employed when he should not have been, thereby exposing vulnerable women to abuse then you might have a case. Not sure you would receive compensation even then though. Were his actions undertaken during his job role, did he exploit his position? However you might be better speaking to police and reporting his coercive control and abuse. If he were prosecuted it might open up Victim Support to you.

So they have male staff… which we have said.

There are male staff in these places. There are males present. Women staying there will know about it but there are male staff present. Don’t talk to them would be my suggestion.
