Hosting my first bbq this weekend in my first home.
Sadly the weather looks a little iffy but we’ll have a laugh regardless.

This is my menu. We have a few vegetarians. I think it’s a very easy menu as I can give dh the skewers I’ve premarinated. And the rest can be prepared in advance.

The only thing that really requires effort is the focaccia (I don’t love making bread but I love the recipe).

Its probably a bit carb heavy but I’ve done it that way with the vegetarians in mind.

Pasta salad
Homemade focaccia
Greek salad
Bombay new potatoes (dishoom recipe)
Butter herb new potatoes (for ppl who don’t like coriander)
Halloumi skewers
Veg skewers
Tandoori style chicken skewers (tastes better than takeaways imo)
Mint lamb kofte
Corn on the cob

Homemade mint chutney
tamarind sauce
Mango chutney

Crisps and shop bought dips
Nuts

Key lime pie
Profiteroles

Wine
Beer

I think that sounds lovely but like a lot of work and definitely too many carbs/potato options. I would have just 1 type of potato but really, if doing bread as well, I'd go with one either pasta or potato salad. If you want more variety, Id' go for a different type of salad - I am always amazed at BBQs how good salads do go down well vs in normal life. Ilike a tomato/red onion/parsley salad with sherry vinegar and olive oil, or a watermelon, cucumber, feta, lime and chilli salad is nice. Or just a nice traditional green salad that you can make more interesting with things like chargrilled veg etc. '

InveterateWineDrinker · 14/04/2025 12:06

Agree that looks a bit carb heavy.

I'd substitute one of the potato dishes with a bean based salad - it's still filling, adds more fibre, and becomes another protein option for the vegetarians.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 14/04/2025 12:09

I'd do less carbs and make a nice cocktail.

I also wouldn't invite people who don't eat coriander.

Gall10 · 14/04/2025 12:10

1 pasta salad
1 potato salad
1 big bowl pre bought greet stuff
1 type meat kebab
1 veg kebab
loads of burgers & buns
pre bought dips & crispy snacks
white chocolate magnums
anyone who can’t get a good meal from that lot can bring their own!
Dont overdo yourself…you want to enjoy the day as well!

Agree with too many carbs. I’d be gutted to go to a bbq with no burnt sausages too

Liud · 14/04/2025 12:12

I honestly won’t find this too much effort. I’ll be doing a lot of the prep the day before with my sis and dh to help chop.

I enjoy cooking

The Bombay potatoes (garlic, chilli, coriander, cumin etc) are my absolute fav so I wouldn’t want to cut that out.

Surely most people when going to a bbq expect nothing more than burgers and sausages, and a bit of half-arsed salad on the side which nobody will touch?

Gundogday · 14/04/2025 12:13

Where are the burgers and sausages!!

Only kidding, looks great.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/04/2025 12:14

No burgers or sausages?!! What kind of a BBQ is this?! (slightly tongue in cheek but not entirely).

I agree with other posters. It’s a bit too carb heavy. Can you swap out one of the many carb dishes for a rocket salad and some grilled peppers?

Thefunnel · 14/04/2025 12:14

I love a watermelon, feta and olive salad with a BBQ - though that's maybe a bit close to your Greek salad.

Have fun!

Loamyearth · 14/04/2025 12:15

Another vote for adding burgers and sausages.

ByCoralMentor · 14/04/2025 12:15

I’d be a bit gutted without a burger or a sausage, all the sides look great though

yeesh · 14/04/2025 12:16

Sounds delish

TheSandgroper · 14/04/2025 12:16

Can the food all be kept properly cold? That comes first. Really, the most successful bbqs are not too many choices but cooked properly and plenty of it.

Ditch the pasta salad and the Bombay potatoes. Focaccia and plain buttered potatoes so as not to compete with the meat flavours.

A fruit platter as part of dessert is an essential for my Great Aussie BBQs.

An interesting non alcoholic thing.

lalaloopyhead · 14/04/2025 12:16

Sounds amazing,...my BBQ fave tho is a slightly burnt sausage slathered in English mustard 😁

Stickortwigs · 14/04/2025 12:17

I’d be gutted there were no burgers and sausages.

TooFancyNancy · 14/04/2025 12:17

Sounds so delicious but I do agree I would want either a sausage or burger! Surely they’re bbq staples!

Keroppi · 14/04/2025 12:17

I think it's a bit random to do focaccia and Greek bits with Indian potatoes and chicken

Would prob stick to 1 or the other. But then I'm from an indo Caribbean family we do the same thing every bbq lol

You could simplify and do
Kebab/naan wraps instead of focaccia, bought from Asian shop
Or focaccia and pitta breads, just the 1 tato salad and no Indian dips just the mint yog and maybe a chilli mayo or a garlic aioli
I like a prawn skewer or jerk spiced fish if the veggies eat seafood

RosesAndHellebores · 14/04/2025 12:17

Fewer carbs, buy the focaccia, and I'd replace one of the puds with fruit. Rum marinaded fresh pineapple slices whacked on the barbecue!

Hayley1256 · 14/04/2025 12:20

Looks good but I'd be a bit disappointed if there was no burgers or sausages at a bbq

GoodVibesHere · 14/04/2025 12:24

That's not a bbq, there are no sausages! You can't beat a hot dog roll with fried onions & mustard sauce.

Also, as it's Easter I'd do some marshmallows on skewers with chocolate to dip.

SpaceOP · 14/04/2025 12:27

Liud · 14/04/2025 12:13

The Bombay potatoes (garlic, chilli, coriander, cumin etc) are my absolute fav so I wouldn’t want to cut that out.

great, so have those and the focaccia and get a different type of salad to replace the pasta and second potato option.

I am a bit horrified by all the sausage insistence - I regularly do BBQs with no sausages! :)

CuriousKangaroo · 14/04/2025 12:28

I like everything on your menu, it sounds delicious. But I do think that it’s better to have one cuisine, not a mish mash, if possible as some of those flavours/combinations clash (tandoori chicken next to a feta filled Greek salad? No thanks!)

A lot of your menu is Indian, so why not cut out the Greek salad and make a kachumber salad instead? Swap halloumi for tandoori paneer (same marinade as chicken so really easy). Cut pasta salad altogether. Same for the butter potatoes. Swap focaccia for naan or parathas. There is a fantastic recipe for Indian coleslaw that someone posted once on here that I make often. Can post it if you are interested.
