Cheating on a quiz?

ohyesido · 13/04/2025 20:04

Went to a quiz night with DH and his family, and one of the questions related to a certain prime minister.

His DN (7) wanted to join in so we gave her a clue by which I said maybe you remember the nodding dog?

now SIL’s husband heard that and got the answer right based on the clue I gave DN.

now SIL is accusing him of cheating for taking a point (two points determined the winner at the end).

would you consider that cheating?

I would not. And this was just for fun, right?

Giving a clue to the child was enabling the child to cheat. If it's a quiz with adult-level questions then children have to accept they might not have sufficient general knowledge to compete as equals. In other words, you were the one who started the cheating so you can't blame someone else for joining in.

ohyesido · 13/04/2025 20:12

I didn’t blame anyone 😆

OK; but you were still wrong to start off the cheating. It's really annoying when you're doing a quiz and people keep giving out clues to others.

GoogolB · 13/04/2025 20:14

No. If someone hears you talking, that’s your fault.

ohyesido · 13/04/2025 20:15

@SwanOfThoseThings she’s a child,

I don’t see anything wrong or enabling by giving her a chance to get a question right.

So take her to a children's quiz. Don't spoil an adult's quiz for everyone else.

FFS it was a clue to a 7 year old - get over yourself! 🙄
I presume it wasn't cough cough WWTBAM, so who cares?

BacktoBeginnersFran · 13/04/2025 20:25

Jesus @SwanOfThoseThings someone has really rattled your cage 🙄

KrisAkabusi · 13/04/2025 20:25

He didn't cheat, he heard you talking. He would have had to actively do something to have it considered cheating.

Edited

Yes - which an adult overheard, spoiling it for everyone else.

MoominMai · 13/04/2025 20:36

yeah it’s not cheating lol if he got the answer because he heard someone else give out a clue. Also who knows if maybe he could have got the answer right anyway. Must say though I’d have been v impressed of a 7 year old got the right answer from your clue!

Shinyandnew1 · 13/04/2025 20:53

He wasn't cheating, you were giving obvious clues loudly which gave the answer away!

You clearly don't go to quizes, it can be a bloodbath!

LizTruss · 13/04/2025 21:30

That's exactly how I scraped through on my 'O' level in political science!

With just that same answer!

Although fortunately I had written a lot of the potential answers on my thigh, (but then everybody did that!)
