To apply for jobs just for fun?

I’ve noticed a few times where I’ve applied for jobs out of curiosity or just to see what’s out there, not because I’m seriously looking for a change. I know people say you should only apply if you’re genuinely interested but sometimes it’s fun to see what opportunities are out there, even if you’re not actively looking.

Is this a bit weird or do others do it too?

What you’re describing OP after your updates is not applying “just for fun”. It’s a perfectly normal thing to do for someone who is quite happy in their current role but open to moving for something better paid / more interesting etc.

Yes it’s different from people who are desperate to move jobs and making dozens of applications, but it’s not “just for fun” either.

it’s a bit like people viewing houses when they are fine with their current house but open to moving if the right place comes along. Rather than viewers who are needing to move. Both sorts are genuine viewers , not just for fun, although obviously the first sort will be more picky.

‘People viewing houses when they are fine with their current house’ otherwise known as time wasters 😂. That’s why thankfully it’s become the norm for sellers to refuse viewings to such people who don’t realise the work for the seller to have to clear their schedule, tidy the house, get kids/pets out the way in preparation just to satisfy someone’s ‘curiousity’ 🙄

I was thinking don't tell an estate agent that! As someone who recently sold a house, those people are the worst!

Its a good comparison of the difficulties though

An open house where you're just one more viewer but might be taking a slot of someone interested

Vs an individual viewing where someone's tidied, carted kids, dogs and stuff out to somewhere else. Estate agents have driven over etc

Its the difference of going to interview Vs seeing if you get shortlisted imo

Don’t agree at all Moomin. Plenty of people move just because they want (but don’t NEED) a bit more space or a bigger garden etc. Those people aren’t time wasters just because they aren’t desperate to move or have to move for job etc. they’re not just curious, they will buy if they like it enough.

In any case how do you suggest an estate agent would tell the difference between someone desperate to move vs someone who doesn’t need to but will if they see the right place? They can’t.

At the risk of derailing.
We were often asked if we wished to have certain viewings they felt were non serious eg viewed lots of properties, didn't have a house on the market. They'd only tack them on when we had other "proper" viewings that day

At one point you could only view if your house was on the market or you were chain free. Some estate agents here still do similar

Look, companies expect you to waste hours tailoring every CV, filling out pointless forms, and writing a ‘passionate’ cover letter only to ghost you. So why play it their way?

Use ChatGPT. Save your time. Doesn't matter if your reason for applying is seeing whats on the table, or if its money, career change, or just getting out of a dead-end gig what matters is you’ve got the skills.

They want performance, not poetry. So give them the headline, skip the drama. Work smart. plus Using faster methods seems fine when its companies using them, so why not the public too. plus who knows what roles youll achieve even if applying for the prospect of it
