Toddler’s span attention

Does any of you have any experience with a toddler’s span attention duration , specifically in a 26 months old . I can only get her focused on activities for 3 to 4 minutes . I have made some research and it seems that the average is around 4 to 6 minutes .

Can’t help. I read Trump’s attention span…

SpanThatWorld · 13/04/2025 11:46

Minute per year of age

Anything beyond that is a bonus.

No, she doesn't have ADHD

Edited to add: Averages are based on a span from most to least. Average does not mean minimum expectation. Some will focus for longer or shorter periods and still be within the normal range.

Well if that's the average, she doesn't seem too far off? My advice is stop researching and enjoy your little girl ☺️

I’ve never actually timed my toddlers attention span, I guess it depends on the activity. Dd could probably do 20 minutes with a large piece of paper and pens/paint but definitely less than 5 reading a book or playing with building blocks. Do they ever get to chose their activities (from choices)
the difference between 3-4 and 4-6 is small, sounds like they’re getting there and I wouldn’t be worried.

Maybe she just has far too much stuff and is overwhelmed by it all.

Try putting 99% of it out of sight and just having a handful of toys out each day.

First child, OP? Grin

I mean it kindly as timing the attention span of your toddler is the kind of bonkers thing you do with your first child. I remember doing some odd things with DD1 and fretting about her not doing things on a certain timeline. With DD2 there was none of that!

It hasn’t ever occurred to me to time either of children’s attention spans, but they range from about 10 seconds to 30+ mins depending on what they’re doing and how old they are.

What’s the problem? That you think something is wrong? Toddlers have short attention spans, that’s part of their ‘charm’! My DD2 is 2.5 and she’ll just wander from thing to thing. I don’t generally set activities up because she’ll only do them for a few mins, but she’s quite happy free playing and going back and forth between all her stuff.

Being bored isn't a bad thing - my 5yo DD has less of an attention span than her 3yo brother and I'm sure it's because the second one has to just get on with it sometimes.
DD3 is 3 months and probably had a longer attention span come to think of it 🤣

I really don't understand why so many parents these days are looking at stuff like this, your child will do what they need to in their own time.

ItsaMeMummio · 13/04/2025 12:14

You need to stop this.

Your child is developing in what seems to be a completely typical way.

Your anxiety and obsessing over it is going to cause damage.

So shes average
Are you the poster convinced your child is autistic,or has ADHD despite no evidence?
