Butter on pain au chocolat?

GeminiGuy · 13/04/2025 10:11

Our son like his pain au chocolate with butter spread on it.

I don't see an issue with that. So, I have always allowed it. But, my wife disagrees categorically based on the premise that a sweet pastry does not need butter (she butters her croissant). She says it is a cultural difference point (she is British and I am Middle Eastern). We each think the other is unreasonable about this.

Thought we would post here for an idea what most people think.

I wouldn’t butter a pain au chocolate, but I figure if you are giving your son a treat anyway it wouldn’t be the hill that I died on not letting him butter it! So long as it’s not a daily occurrence, obviously!

Itsawildridealright · 13/04/2025 10:13

I've voted yanbu as butter is not the devil and your DW is being super controlling with no beneficial outcome. Is she controlling generally?! 🤪

Jollyjoy · 13/04/2025 10:14

I don’t think either need butter as they are so full of butter! But for a treat, if we have freshly heated croissants, I’d have a bit of butter. I wouldn’t think to on a pain au chocolate, it’s already moist.

Anyway is this a proper dispute between you?

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/04/2025 10:14

Butter doesn't belong on them, but if your son likes it why not.

BeaAndBen · 13/04/2025 10:15

If he likes it, then it’s fine.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/04/2025 10:15

Yes to butter here, if hot. Weirdly not on sandwiches but anything hot (toast, pan au chocolate etc)

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 13/04/2025 10:16

Butter on everything!!!! Personally I butter croissants and I don’t butter pain au chocolate, but I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if someone else did. It’s a ridiculous thing to make an issue of.

x2boys · 13/04/2025 10:16

Its not what i would do but if thats the way your son enjoys them than so be it.

ExH is a baker and occasionally made croissants or pain au chocolat at home, butter is literally one of the main ingredients! There’s no reason to add any more to either of them.

Edit to say obviously everyone is free to add butter to whatever they want!

OliveHenry · 13/04/2025 10:19

If your wife adds butter to croissant then she cannot complain when your son adds it to pain au chocolat (which isn't that sweet anyway)!

The reason to add it is if you like it..

There's no law.

My daughter puts cream cheese in hers 🤷‍♀️

PonyPatter44 · 13/04/2025 10:23

How Do you butter a pain au chocolat? Do you spread butter over the top, or do you slice it open like a burger bun and butter over the chocolate slabs? I am intrigued now!

Personally I love a pain au chocolat, and would never think to butter one, but you do you.

Oftenaddled · 13/04/2025 10:24

No different from Nutella on a butter croissant I suppose.

Butter in things and butter in things are different tastes and textures.

SomethingDifferentBloomed · 13/04/2025 10:25

It’s a bit of a rogue choice tbh, but then again so is buttering a croissant. They are like 90% butter to start with! Now a bit of jam I can absolutely get behind…

Cut it open

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/04/2025 10:27

I’d never do that. They are made of butter so don’t need any more!

but my kids do strange things too so I wouldn’t get worked up about it.

WillItEverWork · 13/04/2025 10:29

My DH and DS have butter with Nutella on bread etc. I think it’s gross but each to their own. I would imagine it’s a bit like the butter icing on a cupcake

LardoBurrows · 13/04/2025 10:42

You are both wrong, butter on a pain au chocolate is wrong, it smothers the lovely chocolate taste and is sacrilege.

Croissants are made with butter (if you buy the all butter croissants and not the nasty ones made with margarine and palm oil) and were designed to be eaten as they are, a perfect and complete pastry, no additions necessary - apart from a strong black coffee and a Gauloise obvs.

faerietales · 13/04/2025 10:43

It sounds so wrong to me but then I would have butter with peanut butter or chocolate spread on toast so I'm clearly being a bit hypocritical, lol.

Pillarsofsalt · 13/04/2025 10:44

If it came down to a pain au chocolate OR butter I’d choose the butter 😄

Lorlorlorikeet · 13/04/2025 10:45

In a family of cardiac issues, this gives me the collywobbles.

InWithThePlums · 13/04/2025 10:45

But they are about 90% butter as it is!! I butter everything, but never a pastry.

McSpoot · 13/04/2025 10:46

It seems odd to me, but I don't butter a croissant either. However, if he like it, I don't see the problem.

Dramatic · 13/04/2025 10:47

It's a bit odd but I wouldn't be stopping someone else having it if that's what they wanted.
