Working for family/parents business

AIBU to think that if you work for your parents business you will get paid more than other employees doing same job and get much more annual leave?

I know 2 people that work for their parents business. 1 freely says that she does a few bits in the office replying to emails but most of the time she just goes on social media. Her uncle owns the company. The other goes on holiday loads and she will just ring on a Monday and say she isn’t coming in. She works for her parents.

These businesses are run by family members which I’m sure is different to running it yourself or partner.

Depends on the business - we all work bloody hard for not a lot of money in our family business which turns 5 this year.

I'd actually say the opposite - lots of people who work for family end up working stupid hours and get taken advantage of.

I guess it depends on the set-up though.

My parents owned their own company and would never have accepted that behaviour. That said, I wouldn’t have wanted to work for them. I once advised them on something to do with my specialist area and they were totally dismissive and thought they knew better. I think the idea their child would know more than them was difficult for them to comprehend despite my 15 years experience in the field 🙄
I love them but I don’t think working together would be conducive to a great relationship. Everyone will be different so I don’t think you can make a sweeping statement.

Depends on the business. My family has a highly successful and now very old business which multiple members work in ( I will not say what as would be very outing). It's a specialist service ( one everyone needs at some point) so they definitely don't just turn up and go on social media.
(I am not in the business myself).
They all have had to do specialist training and absolutely do the work.
They are paid approximately for the jobs they do. in fact family members going into the business have always started at the very bottom on the minimum wage.
Senior family members do all own a share of the company though. ( As do I as a family member who inherited a shared)

As long as it's not off the books cash in hand, it's the company/owners problem if they choose to employ staff they don't have enough work or are allowed to slack off.

I do sometimes feel 'family businesses' often include at least one fairly lazy unwilling individual who's clearly being paid to do not much. But I'm sure the majority actually need everyone to pull their weight if they want to make sufficient profit.

I guess I'm kind of jealous. I always wanted to just inherit a shop from my dad or something. So I'd have a business without having to think about it. But of course you'd need the right support and knowledge to make it continue to succeed.
