Shop assistant scanned same item twice.

Hi,

Does anybody have any experience of this? I bought some clothes in Sports Direct today. The total amount came up to more than I was expecting and I wondered if my son had mixed up the 2 for £35 offer. Anyway, I've gotten home and realised that the assistant scanned a £30 jacket twice.

I'm a bit worried as I remember before going to return something to their stores and they said they don't offer an exchange or money back unless there's something wrong with the item! I've heard other stories about them as well.

I don't know how to prove that I didn't buy two. I could ask them to check CCTV but would they? I'm gutted.

Your receipt would have a date and time so narrowing it down shouldn't take long

The manager might also have claimed to be checking but just refunded without doing anything

I used to work in head office and they have cctv that covers the tills so they should be able to pull your transaction (if they aren’t being dicks) but they do have cameras that covers each till and they can pull footage. It might need to go to head office I’m not sure how long the manager can view back

Go back with your receipt and the clothing and say what's happened. Be firm and Tell Them They Have Overcharged You And You Want The Refund.
A loud voice will help imo and the attitude of a menapausal lovely .

This happened to me in a different shop. I challenged it just after I left the till and got the money back. The assistant said the label had dropped off the first item and it had accidentally gone across the scanner again when they were scanning a cheaper item. I am not convinced it wasn't some sort of scam and that if I hadn't noticed then the assistant would have refunded the money to themselves later on.

Why assume store staff are scamming you? Have you never made a mistake in your job! It must be nice to be so perfect!

Exactly. I work in a supermarket and sometimes items scan more than once as you pass them over the reader. Usually I notice, but sometimes I don't - I'll always refund as soon as the person has looked at their receipt and said 'oh, you put this one through twice'. It's just human error.

What kind of a scam would it be anyway? The shop telling till operators that they have to scan X number of items twice? What would be in it for the till operator? We can't 'refund things to ourselves' - all refunds have to be authorised and signed for.
