To be a bit envious of this lifestyle? (USA)

I've just watched School Swap: UK to USA on Channel 4 and have ended up feeling a teensy bit jealous of the kind of lifestyle that's possible over there.

Even normal, non wealthy families seemed to be able to live really outdoorsy lifestyles where they can hike and hunt and boat amongst the gorgeous scenery. I feel like in the UK, even rurally it isn't possible as everywhere is so densely populated especially when the weather is nice. The weather is also a limiting factor!

I'm obviously not jealous of the MAGA/Trump craziness or the crappy healthcare and all the rest of the political stuff but purely the lifestyle side of things, it seems so much more possible to live in that free, outdoorsy kind of way.

And the schools seemed to have a much more positive, enthusiastic culture with things like school sports and dances, compared to the UK teens in their drab uniforms staring at their phones the whole time in their miserable, run down secondary school.

aibu? Anyone live this kind of life in the UK? If so, where?!

It's totally different for Americans to criticise their own country. I'm sure Brits wouldn't like it if I came home and sat there telling them all about how crap Britain is.

Your on a British based forum, none of us have done to your home to tell you these imagined slights!

Surely American cuisine is influenced by European heritage. I saw on the News a New York Deli owner panicking about the tariffs and stocking up on Parmesan before they came into place. Another member of the public saie it will really impact her choices as she mainly eats imported food.

It is, but there's a ton of Latin American food and Jewish food, too.

I hear it all the time, everywhere. Online, at home, in the news, coupled with never, ever saying anything positive about it...frankly I wish they'd all shut up! If the US is so bad, why do the Brits come on holiday here i droves then???

Um maybe use US forums. The US has a lot to be ashamed off at the moment and thankfully many American people aren’t so blinkered as yourself.

This

Yes, that's true in some parts of the States, and it's a stain on the nation.

Thankfully, where I live is not like that, although of course there are racist individuals everywhere - including in Britain.

In droves, I doubt that, many Brits couldn't afford to go to the U.S. especially these days, it all goes on housing costs and food!

Which you can buy across Europe too.

I'm not blinkered nor am I American. I have nothing to be ashamed of - I didn't help vote him in.

That's the people who identify as Catholic. The overall culture is Catholic and has a strongly Catholic heritage. This is shown in its architecture, history, and social attitudes. France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece...they all retain Catholic attitudes about women. Maybe only 35% identify as Catholic and go to church, but the continent is a product of a Catholic heritage, much of which endures today.

Errr Europe isn’t the continent that tells women what they can do with their bodies. You’re confusing Europe with the US. You do realise there is more to a continent than architecture, you seem obsessed with it.

Half the country did and the country as a whole has to take responsibility for him and his increasingly fascist acts. There was plenty to critique ( and praise)the US about before Trump.

There are more Jewish people in America than there are in Israel, and there are many millions more Jewish people in America than there are in Europe. I'm sure you can seek out any cuisine you want in Europe, but my point is that Jewish and Latin American food is everywhere here, in addition to European food. You don't have to go and seek out a specialist shop or restaurant. I bet most non-Jewish people in the UK have no idea what challah bread is, but everyone does here. And of course we are attached to South America, so no surprise that Latin cuisine is readily available and not just in specific restaurants and shops.

I, personally, have found America more diverse in some key ways than Europe. YMMV.

Only 31.5% of eligible voters voted for Trump, actually.

Many, many of the States are in no way telling women what they may do with your bodies. Once again, you're confusing the Red states with America as a whole.

Maybe the part of the UK you lived in didn't know anything about Jewish culture but the part I love in does!

You’ve got a great electoral system then considering how somebody can sweep in and ride rough shod over the constitution, rights, security and laws on 31% of the vote. Or are we not allowed to point that out with it being criticism and all.

Hardly droves - it’s 6%

I’ve been many times as we have family there. I love it however it’s not above criticism and I wouldn’t want to live there.

That's only a measurement from the last 30 days! Low season!

How do you know you wouldn't like it here? If you lived in a sensible part, not a crazy part.

63% of eligible voters voted. Half of those voted for Trump.

I’ve only been to lovely parts not crazy parts for varying amounts of time. Some quite long. I absolutely do know I wouldn’t want to live there. Recents events have only accentuated what I already felt as regards living there.

You can't expect the media to have anything positive to say about the US for the foreseeable future. You must know the world is watching the US self destruct in absolute horror. It's admirable that you want to try to defend your adopted country but try to view the situation through the eyes of others and then take a step back from the internet.

But everyone was so negative about it well before Trump. The Brits have always looked down on it. No one ever says one positive thing about it. And you're right - I wouldn't expect that from the media right now, of course.

I'm coming home soon and I just know I'm going to get a shower of insults about my life choices. 🙈

Yes - should step away from the internet!

It's OK in Massachusetts. Very blue state. And you wouldn't like air conditioning and free Coke refills and insect screens and loos and water fountains everywhere and snowy winters and guaranteed summers? I bet you would!
