My DD5 came down with a fever on Tuesday night. Nothing a little calpol couldn’t sort out initially.

she woke up screaming during the night and was curling up into a ball screaming. We were asking her what was wrong and she just couldn’t answer. She was kind of contracting her body, it’s hard to explain.

she didn’t have a fever at that time.

anyways, we took her to the loo and I can’t remember if she peed or not now. But sometimes in the past, she does moan during the night and then we take her to the loo and she’s kind of asleep, but pees and then back to bed and she’s fine. She fell asleep again and then woke up again, screaming and saying something was in her bed. ( I was next to her ) there wasn’t anything. Anyways I managed to calm her down and she went to sleep until the morning.

she had a fever all of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday too. She has seen a doctor and had some blood tests because I noticed when her fever is rising, she was looking quite yellow for a short time. Blood tests came back normal, so I felt reassured. The fever is decreasing in frequency too, which is also reassuring.

her fevers haven’t been that high, up to 38,5 or so.

anyway last night she started shivering again and fell asleep. I gave her medicine as soon as she fell asleep.

she woke up after a bit and she was screaming her head off and she didn’t recognise me for a bit. She was also contorting her body like she did the other night. I took her to the toilet and she did pee. She’d been saying earlier on she really needed to go but then fell asleep She was just shouting ‘ I want my mummy ‘: anyway I managed to calm her down. She didn’t actually have a fever at this time, as the medicine had kicked in. She’d lay down and fallen asleep and I had given her medicine as soon as I noticed the shivering. So it never really came up properly but she was just exhausted.

anyway during the night she woke up a couple of times and was quite distressed. I managed to calm her down.

her fever also came back in the night and I gave her medicine, water and some food.

she woke up this morning and she seems fine. She knew where she was etc and not delirious.

her fever hasn’t come back yet but I am very concerned about her and I can’t work out if it’s just that she was extremely tired or if it’s something else.

Sorry this meant to say ‘ I gave her medicine as soon as she started shivering ‘. I also want to add that her fevers have come down with medicine, she’s been eating when she feels better and she’s been drinking a lot and going to the loo. When her medicine has kicked in, she’s playing normally etc. she’s just miserable whenever her fever rises.

You need to phone 111 and take their advice tbh.

It could be a few things - I'd immediately suspect an infection, along with possible dehydration - but I agree with PP that you need to seek medical advice

My kid gets this with fevers. Even if ok during the day and the fever isn’t that high My dc also sleep walks when not poorly and can appear to be awake and distressed but is actually asleep.
usually it’s the fever ‘breaking’. Did she wake up sweaty? How many days has this been going on?

letmeknowpls · 12/04/2025 11:06

I have been seeking medical advice but I guess not for this particular state of things. They did a blood test to check her inflammation levels and although elevated, they still think it’s viral at this point. I may just take her to hospital. Im not in the UK at the moment, so can’t ring 111.

She did wake up super sweaty. But the fever is back again now after around 6-7 hours.

first fever was on Tuesday night.

I'm not medically trained so I would seek advice on the temperature.

Primary age children can suffer from night terrors and they generally out grow them before secondary school. For my DD they always happened between falling asleep and 4 hours later. DD would be distressed, appeared to be in pain, calling for me but even though her eyes were open wasn't awake or aware of where she was. The first few times were really upsetting for us but once we realised it was night terrors we were much calmer.

We bought cooling bottom sheets and pillow cases (not cotton) as the hotter DD was the more night terrors she had. So we were always more vigilant when she had a temperature. I just used to hug DD and reassure her that 'mummy was here'. If DD wanted to move 'escape' the terror I took her to the toilet. DD had no memory the next morning but her terror was very real at night and with experience episodes only lasted 10 mins before I could get her back to sleep. Good luck OP.

Yeah I think even if it’s night terrors, just seeing as it’s crept up now she’s ill, I would feel more comfortable discussing with a doctor.
