To think the correct way to cut a sandwich is diagonally?

That's all - silly question really. But am I being unreasonable to think sandwiches are nicer when they're cut diagonally?

YABU: Rectangles are superior
YANBU: Of course triangles are better

Diagonal is the best
Tastes better

This. Cut into rectangles if going in a lunchbox for practicality, but first choice is triangles every time

AppleKatie · 12/04/2025 07:55

Triangle of course unless bacon.

BeaAndBen · 12/04/2025 07:59

Rectangle if going in a packed lunch, because they fit in the box better.

Triangle if eating right away.

My dad always said diagonal was pretentious so he didn’t allow it.

I cut them diagonal if eating at home and rectangle if wrapping for a packed lunch.

What if you were in a cafe?

I go a little off the corner diagonally.

Triangles for most fillings (prawn or egg mayonnaise, ham, cheese, chicken, etc.). Hot sandwiches like fish fingers, sausage (any filling with that sort of shape), rectangles as otherwise you are left with a tiny corner of fish finger or sausage that keeps falling out.

GRex · 12/04/2025 08:12

I've always preferred triangles, so I was surprised when DS asked to please cut his sandwich into squares. The key is that he loves crusts, I tolerate them.

BruisedNeckMeat · 12/04/2025 08:18

Fishfinger is the only sandwich I can think of that is better as rectangles.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 12/04/2025 08:34

Weirdly, in my house, it's rectangular for 'every day' sandwiches and triangular for posh or weekend sandwiches. I don't know why. It just is! If I'm feeling really fancy, I cut mine into quarters! I love a good sandwich!

Ddakji · 12/04/2025 08:36

Is this for some kind of afternoon tea set up? Because if I’m making myself a sandwich for lunch I don’t cut it at all.

But if it was for an afternoon tea kind of thing I’d go with diagonally. Less crust.

soupyspoon · 12/04/2025 08:39

The bread flaps about if you use triangles, plus is often empty in the corners

HelenWheels · 12/04/2025 08:40

oh yes i like quarter sandwiches, we used to do that when i worked in the old people's home.

ChristmasFluff · 12/04/2025 09:06

Surely they aren't rectangles, they're OBLONGS!

Depends on the filling. A “wetter” sandwich (tuna mayo for example) needs to be cut diagonally in my opinion, as the “wet” filling spreads and eliminates those pesky dry corners.

FOJN · 12/04/2025 06:51

Surely a chip butty calls for the fold method? 😁

Definitely this. Your filling has less chance of falling out with the folded "butty" style.

ByTheNine · 12/04/2025 09:15

Very much agree with previous poster about cutting vertically. It means both sandwiches are identical so you don't have to decide whether to eat the top or bottom crust sandwich first. Saves valuable seconds on a short lunch break

AppleKatie · 12/04/2025 07:55

Triangle of course unless bacon.

Or fried egg

Bluevelvetsofa · 12/04/2025 09:17

Bacon, sausage and fish finger sandwiches are preferable as rectangles, due to the shape of the comestibles. Everything else should be triangular.

Anonym00se · 12/04/2025 09:18

I prefer rectangles. It gives you a better grasp, especially one handed. If I eat a triangular sandwich I lose filling from both corners if I don’t hold it on each corner.

BlossomBlanket · 12/04/2025 07:15

Not so simple. There's a reason I'm asking.

Do you want to explain what that reason is? 🤔

Depends on my mood on any given day, but why in my head do I think you get "more sandwich" in a diagonal cut than straight across? As for straight to top bottom??? That's just weird!! 😆

wherearemypastnames · 12/04/2025 09:25

You see the long line of the diagonal and your brain gets confused
same as tall jars look more than short squat ones

anyway YABU because it’s personal preference and people shouldn’t be expected to be the same

i orefer rectangle because filling is less likely to fall out the thin ends

WhassatNow · 12/04/2025 09:56

In WhassatNow land, this depends on who you're cutting them for:

  • for triangle fanciers: cut into triangles if you like the person and indulge their foibles, otherwise rectangles
  • all other situations: rectangles - less risk of filling escape. If posh rectangles are required, cut smaller and/or remove crusts and carefully consider the pairing of loaf to filling.

The above only applies for sandwiches made from a rectangular cross-section bread, which is what I'd consider a sandwich to be. Never cut a roll (unless it's the only bread you have in and it's for someone who's going to eat less than a full roll, in which case practical considerations win out). Half panini off perpendicular. Filled baton are for a massive appetite, leave them in one piece. Toasties are for social occasions and are cut into quarters according to the conditions above, and shared between whoever is present, so that no one person is left waiting for multiple rounds of toasties to have been made before they can eat.

Veggielepsy · 12/04/2025 10:05

I personally find something undignified about triangle eating. Posting the corner into your mouth is off-puttingly prissy to me. Plus I prefer the two distinct edges of crust and the subtly textures of crumb at the bottom and top. From the top and underside of the loaf.

Veggielepsy · 12/04/2025 10:06

Subtly different*

Missey85 · 12/04/2025 10:06

I like 2 rectangles 😊 or 4 triangles 🥪
