A week ago on Wednesday DD had what I thought was a viral infection. Temp, off food etc. it seemed to go by the Friday so I thought nothing of it

On Sunday I had symptoms of strep, sudden sore throat, headache so ended up on penicillin

Wednesday just gone I took her straight to the walk in centre as she was really lethargic, fever and swollen glands. Dr said there said swollen throat with some white streaks so tonsillitis, prescribed Pen V 4 times a day. I gave her 2 doses on Wednesday which I’ve had to conceal in Coca Cola as it’s the only thing that masks the taste.

She seemed abit better yesterday but today the temp seems to be creeping back up. She’s got some diarrhoea the same as me so I know the PenV is getting into her system. She’s not eating properly. Maybe chocolate stars and mini cookies but aside from that nothing. Drinking with encouragement and weeing.

She’s not lethargic til the temp creeps up. I’m worried re the not eating and the fevers, she won’t open her mouth either and I know she has an adult molar that just came through with a big white patch on the gum and I think it’s making her abit dribbly.

She also keeps getting a really flushed face, and I’m almost certain she’s got strawberry tongue so I’m thinking more scarlet fever. Im not sure what to do, should the antibiotics have kicked in by now? I’m really anxious re sepsis etc and I do suffer badly with health anxiety.

Darling I don't want to worry you but at 4 years old our DD was treated for tonsillitis with antibiotics but just kept getting worse.
Our local walk in centre then prescribed steroids, but she kept getting worse.
In desperation we drove through the night to Alder Hey children's hospital in Liverpool and the instantly diagnosed HERPES SIMPLEX.
She was admitted to critical care
Acyclovir and the dedication of the NHS staff there saved her life.
Please don't leave this.

Huh? Herpes simplex as in cold sores / blisters?

Can you eat with a quinsy?

Can you eat with a quinsy?

Not easily

CoconutSky · 11/04/2025 20:34

She did ask for a bowl of those potato letters so I've done some. She's ate them quite quickly

A&E are not overreacting. Could be glandular fever, Scarlett (as you suggest), anything. Let them do their job and your DD will recover.

HMW19061 · 11/04/2025 20:38

Generally she wouldn’t be eating if it was quinsy. It sounds like she’s turning a corner, she’s eating and drinking, just give her whatever she asks for/will
eat until shes feeling better and keep her topped up with Calpol and ibuprofen for the pain.

Northerngirl821 · 11/04/2025 20:40

She’s eating, drinking and is active. She’s on the correct antibiotic for strep throat/scarlet fever. I don’t think she needs A&E.

WhatMe123 · 11/04/2025 20:41

It's not treated differently if it is scarlet fever, anti biotics are prescribed which she already has 😁 hopefully tomorrow they'll have fully kicked in op

Zanatdy · 11/04/2025 20:42

Personally it doesn’t sound like a trip to A&E if you’ve seen the GP, have a diagnosis and in the early days of antibiotics. The fact she is eating and has an appetite is good. I’d only go to A&E if she was deteriorating. It will take some time to get better. Keep up with pain relief and the antibiotics and hopefully she will be much better by Monday. If worried over the weekend, i’d think 111 would be more appropriate than A&E, but that is assuming she continues to be stable like she is. You’re her parent so know if you feel she needs urgent medical attention, right now doesn’t sound like it is. Horrible to see little one’s unwell but a few days rest and meds will do the trick.

CoconutSky · 11/04/2025 20:54

I don’t think it’s glandular fever. We’ve all had it. Me DD and my mum and both mine and mums went away with antibiotics

OP posts:
trying29 · 11/04/2025 20:59

I would take her in. I had strep before Xmas and was given a 5 day course of antibiotics and they didn’t work - I needed a further 10 day course to stop it. Could she have a rash in her mouth on top of the tonsillitis making her want to keep her mouth shut? Good luck - strep is rough

CoconutSky · 11/04/2025 21:01

When her temp spikes her nose goes runny. Is that normal.

OP posts:
FairlyTired · 11/04/2025 21:19

I would take her in if she's the same in the morning or worsens overnight. Worst case you have a long wait and some reassurance, best case they work out she needs something else and she recovers quicker.
Hopefully after some sleep she'll be a bit better in the morning.

Bababear987 · 11/04/2025 21:21

So shes eating and drinking and on a course of antibiotics, she really doesnt need A&E shes more likely to catch something

CoconutSky · 11/04/2025 21:53

She isnt lethargic thankfully. Compared to Wednesday where she was practically falling asleep stood up. It's just the pain upon mouth opening and the temps that are scaring me. Plus the random runny noses. She's awake watching numberblocks. I am so anxious.

She doesn’t want yoghurt or ice cream. Just bloody chocolate, jelly beans and Maryland cookies

I’m no doctor but whenever my children have been ill with things like this the medical advice i have had is to not worry too much about food, they can survive a few days without much food, but fluids are obviously important. What about ice lollies to hopefully soothe her throat but also get fluids in.
aside from that i’d just trust your gut, maybe see how she is over the next 24 hours and get an OOH appt if you don’t think she is getting better.

MaryPoppinsAtAll · 11/04/2025 22:06

I think it would be a good idea to take her to OOHs and ask if a swab could be done to find out what the bug is. Then they will know if that antibiotic works on it.

My DS had scarlet fever and it went on for a long time and got really bad. The antibiotic worked extremely quickly though.

my family oof 4 are all on antibiotics with suspected tonsilitius my son 8 is on pen V 2nd day his been off his food but light snacks have gone down, the rest of us on amoxcycillion h.e u spell that. as long as she is having fluids and acting reasonably normal then should be ok. dont go too ane as yoou will pick up this vile 4-5 week viral going round we are on our 4th week now and still got symptoms with anti b's. my 3 year old sounds the same as yours but she is drinking her medicine happily maybe giving it with the cola could not be the best as cola is quite hard on the tummy anyway my son hates the taste but its best to persuade the best you can with drinking the medicine from the bottle without mixing?

mediumdicketh · 11/04/2025 22:20

also let her sleep we have had temperatures on and off for 4 weeks weakness of the body emotional too!

Hankunamatata · 11/04/2025 22:22

Tonsillitis always makes me feel like I'm dying for at least 2 or 3 days. Ibuprofen is only pain relief that helps me but not sure of age

Chick981 · 11/04/2025 22:27

She’s eating and drinking and has been dancing around…. Let her sleep and see how she is tomorrow. By then antibiotics should be properly kicking in

OneCalmFish · 11/04/2025 22:33

Worrying about your child is not over reacting. My little one is also teething, he’s just finished a 5 day course of antibiotics the swab showed no strep but he had pus at back of throat his nose and eyes both stopped running after 2 days didn’t get a temp until after I’d had him at the docs (had only taken 3 doses)we gave paracetamol for a couple of days that helped with pain and temp but gave antibiotics morning and night with another syringe of ibuprofen straight after taking it as he too despised and gagged at the taste. I was also told that for first yr of any nursery/school new start they’re going to be sick more often than not (4th time this year) and ENT wouldn’t even look until it’s 6 times in a year(this is 4th) my hint is learn the signs, for me it was when his eye gunked up, see something familiar just look in their mouth using natural light tilt their head back. I’ve seen when it’s not gone and also when it clearly had. Weirdly the drooling stopped with the meds so I think his amber bracelet is helping him we’ve a little cross cutter who does 4 at a time, I’d suggest ordering a bracelet if there are more teeth to come do need to be worn a while before they take effect x

CoconutSky · 11/04/2025 22:36

She’s asleep so will report back in the morning. I’m shattered myself!
I think given the fact my mum, me and DD all came down with this within like 3 days of each other I’m assuming it’s strep. I’ll probably take her in the morning if she’s no better.

OP posts:
TaggieO · 11/04/2025 22:39

If she’s responding to the antibiotics, which it sounds like she is because she’s eating, drinking and dancing around then what makes you think she needs A&E? Apart from scaring yourself with googling? If she is presenting an improving picture then that’s a sign she’s responding to treatment. Keep an eye on her, regular antipyrexials if she’s feverish, fluids and if she carries on improving she’ll be better in no time and if she gets worse then seek help.

CoconutSky · 11/04/2025 22:44

I think I maybe thought the temperature would’ve come down and not reappeared by now. I think maybe I was expecting too much too soon with the antibiotics. Plus her tooth really is bothering her.
