Is anyone else sick of travelling on trains?

I know i need to learn to drive. Took the slow train to London from the Midlands as I can't afford the high-speed one.
No option to reserve a seat, luckily I got one as it's busy. People having loud phone conversations, constantly moving around and hitting the back of your seat.
A woman sat next to me and ate a prawn sandwich, why would you do that.
Tons of people rushing on 20 seconds before the train leaves, expecting a seat.
People not moving their bags from seats when they can see it's very busy, I doubt they've paid for 2 seats.

Cramped, overpriced, noisy, just generally unpleasant. Most journeys are the same unless it's very quiet. Does anyone else feel like this?
Every time I go abroad, I find trains cheaper and more pleasant, and actually on time.

It's horrible. I try and upgrade my ticket if it's not too expensive. And I always have headphones and audio to listen to.

Overthebow · 11/04/2025 15:45

I really don’t like trains so I don’t travel by them usually.

PaintDecisions · 11/04/2025 15:47

What's wrong with a prawn sandwich? It's hardly a strong scented meal.

Trains are what they are. You either embrace it or fight it - but you'll lose a fight. Wear headphones. Read a book. Job done.

TigerRag · 11/04/2025 15:47

It's awful. Spent most of today having to listen to screaming kids

And the there's the adults with no volume control

cherrytree12345 · 11/04/2025 15:51

Anywhere you are confined with the public is generally is not pleasant to be honest. Any form of public transport- people have no manners or consideration for anyone else. Waiting rooms in hospitals especially A&E are the same.

ohtowinthelottery · 11/04/2025 15:57

Bags on seats can be lifted off and either handed to the owner or dumped on the floor. Noone has a right for their bag to have a seat, least of all when people are standing. They'll soon tell you if the occupant of the seat has popped to the toilet!

I don't see a problem with someone eating a sandwich. It's hardly curry.

I've travelled extensively by train in other European countries and phone behaviour varies widely from place to place. I was actually pleasantly astounded when a woman's phone rang and she got up and went and stood between carriages to hold her conversation.

It really is strong scented, and terrible for people nearby if they are allergic to shellfish.

Oh come off it, you might as well try to ban all foods for allergens then.

Not all allergens are airborne either. My mum and BIL are both allergic to shellfish as it happens, one with anaphylaxis, and both are happy to share a table with anyone eating shellfish. We just don't kiss them or wipe our hands on them after eating.

Perhaps she was hungry. Just a thought.

cariadlet · 11/04/2025 16:18

I don't drive so use trains a lot and quite like them.

I don't use them in rush hour so almost always get a seat. I can read on a train without getting travel sick. Don't often end up near badly behaved children. If someone is using a device and has it too loud, I ask them to turn it down or use their headphones.

I just wish they weren't so expensive.

wherearemypastnames · 11/04/2025 16:20

Fish should not smell strongly . Curries can. Egg mayo can. Fresh fish and shellfish shouldn’t

Kreisler · 11/04/2025 16:20

It's pretty awful. Unreliable, dirty and slow. And that's just the passengers.

Also : the bloody price.

Kreisler · 11/04/2025 16:22

Get driving lessons OP. I did when I moved out of London and realised how difficult it is getting anywhere without a car.

shewasasaint · 11/04/2025 16:23

I would like train travel more if they would put on enough carriages. Two or three carriages aren’t enough and end up packed with lots standing.

jellyoh · 11/04/2025 16:24

I quite enjoy a day trip or holiday by train, although it's usually inexpensive as we book ahead and use a Family Railcard. We never drive if train is an option as it's quite spacious with a table seat and you have a surface for dcs activity books, snacks and toys. We generally travel off-peak so trains aren't too busy, though sometimes it's been difficult to get a seat if we can't reserve them. I like that I can relax and read a book or watch something on my phone, which I couldn't do if I was driving.

I regularly get a train from Plymouth to Bristol. It's 4 carriages and heaving from Exeter. I remember getting that train from Birmingham (it usually comes from Newcastle or Scotland) and it was ridiculously busy. And it was 4 carriages. Occasionally they'll attach another train

MasterBeth · 11/04/2025 16:25

Either learn to drive, stop moaning or get a coach.

Public transport means mixing with the public. Maybe think about what it says about you if other people are so problematic to you

PontiacFirebird · 11/04/2025 16:27

I drive but I used to love train travel. People did NOT eat stinky food on the train. I’m on a train now, and everyone around me is eating something- Doritos, McDonalds, sandwiches. I really think eating anything other than a biscuit or something on a train is so inconsiderate, unless on a really long journey ( which we are not!)
Everyone treats everywhere as their living room nowadays, there’s no consideration at all.

tipsyMintMember · 11/04/2025 16:28

Don't drive so do have to so them.

I've had some truely god awful journey's with them and I have to say post covid I think it's more common to have bad ones than good and they are really expensive now.

That’s rubbish. Firstly we should all be driving LESS, secondly being in public does not have to mean a free for all! Maybe you don’t remember when people were expected to behave themselves in public, but I do!

Sidebeforeself · 11/04/2025 16:31

I used to go regularly from Leeds to Birmingham and back . It was always utterly rammed. I’d have to fight to get to my booked seat and always had to turf someone out. It used to make me so anxious. And then of course several people playing crap on their phones at full volume. Once I saw these poor blokes with luggage trying to get on. They didn’t speak English and I was trying to explain to them what to do and they looked utterly appalled

Iheartmysmart · 11/04/2025 16:32

I don’t travel by train as much as I used to but recent journey experiences have been expensive, unreliable and overcrowded. Fortunately I drive so have an alternative but I feel sorry for those who don’t have a choice, public transport in this country is dire.

NatureOverNightclubs · 11/04/2025 16:35

And the crisps. The FUCKING crisps!!

SpanThatWorld · 11/04/2025 16:38

I love trains.

I commute daily using at least 2 trains and a tube so I'm the first to agree that standing with your nose up someone's armpit is not fun.

But a good train journey is an opportunity to stare out of the window and watch the world go by. Try doing that whilst driving a car through a contraflow on the M6

TeaRoseTallulah · 11/04/2025 16:38

Tbh there are a whole new set of problems if you drive.

I love train travel , the tube can fuck off but I like over ground.

There is a special place in hell for people who don't use ear buds though,I'll grant you that.
