Has anybody else never been pregnant?

I'm in my mid 30s, and between the age of 18 and now have had around 12 sexual partners.
I've predominantly taken the pill except for a brief spell of being on the Depo injection, and take the pill at pretty much the same time each night.
Not so much recently but when younger I had the very odd missed pill/took it too late.
However I've never to my knowledge had a pregnancy scare or an accidental pregnancy.

You hear of these a lot, yet it's never happened for me. I've never TTC so I have no idea but I'm starting to worry, though I'm maybe just paranoid. Any advice?

Never had a 'scare'. Was on contraception for 10 years, off contraception for 3 years and had regular sex (I tracked ovulation to avoid pregnancy).

After 3 years I convinced myself I was infertile. How could I possibly be having regular intercourse even during my fertile window (TMI but he never finished inside during those days). Never had an accident. I never took a pregnancy test before the age of 35.

Currently 24 weeks pregnant because I ovulated early in November!

Sesame2011 · 11/04/2025 12:50

I had sporadic reckless sex between 16 and 24 and never fell pregnant (did have 1 scare though)

I then moved onto women so pregnancy scares weren't an issue. Im now 35 and 28 weeks pregnant with my first baby. Had no trouble falling pregnant quickly.

PigInADuvet · 11/04/2025 12:52

It's not difficult to not get pregnant if you use contraception as intended. It's very effective when used correctly.

Allswellthatendswelll · 11/04/2025 12:52

Never got pregnant or had any real scares in my 20s on hormonal contraception. Hated the pill so used the withdrawal method with DH for about 3 years before ttc. No pregnancy scares. We did take a long time to conceive mainly due to his dodgy sperm it turned out but I've had 3 pregnancies (2 children). Basically you don't know and also depends on your partner!

Doggymummar · 11/04/2025 12:52

55 and never been pregnant despite copious rounds of IVF they ne er found any medical reason why not

namechangenelly1 · 11/04/2025 12:53

I’ve never been pregnant. I’m 38 and TTC for 4 years! I’m the only person in my family and friends who has never been pregnant. Some of them had children , some had miscarriages and some had abortions.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/04/2025 12:55

I was reasonably ‘active’ between the ages of 18 and 25 and (foolishly) wasn’t always careful with contraception- never got pregnant (nor an STI thank goodness). When I wanted to get pregnant with DH at the age of 27 it happened the very first month we tried. I have been incredibly lucky.

Zeitumschaltung · 11/04/2025 12:56

People think you can easily get pregnant on contraception because you have a 1% chance of getting pregnant each time you have sex. It’s actually a 1% chance per year of correctly using that contraception. So the odds are much more in the favour of not getting pregnant than some may realise.

PurBal · 11/04/2025 13:02

Ditto @StrongLazyVaguehere. Was told I had polycystic ovaries and might not be able to conceive once I hit 30. Fair bit of (unsafe) sex in my late teens / twenties (more than I’d care to admit) so assumed it was because I couldn’t conceive. When I decided to start a family with DH I got pregnant 2nd month with DC1 and 1st with DC2.

Using hormonal methods or a coil it's more like 0.1% chance.

Zezet · 11/04/2025 13:26

I never had a pregnancy scare and I never had a problem getting pregnant when wanted.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/04/2025 13:33

You hear about accidental pregnancies because they’re unusual - women using contraception not getting pregnant isn’t news!
I never had any ‘pregnancy scares’ on the pill, which was until I was 35 when I TTC, and then from 38 onwards after I’d had my DD. Took a while to conceive because it turned out I had PCOS so needed a couple of rounds of clomid after diagnosis.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 11/04/2025 13:51

I was on the pill from age 17, first time with DD1 I got pregnant age 28 while on the pill a few months after we got married - very hungover and perhaps the one I took in the morning came up again. 😵

With DD2 we did actually plan her, I was 32 and I got pregnant the first month we were together at the right time.

As it happened in my late 30s I was diagnosed with endometriosis and PCOS, so I'm glad DD1 happened slightly sooner than planned.

The only thing is now I'm 49 and have come off the pill, my periods seem to have stopped for four months (I am definitely not pregnant nor trying to be- am checking whether my periods have stopped) we are not quite so frisky these days and we have condoms but I read the pregnant at 48 thread recently thinking SHIT 😱

It’s a different figure per type of contraception, but my point is that it’s always per year, not per ejaculation

TheIceBear · 11/04/2025 15:02

I used the withdrawal method for years and never got pregnant. I know it’s not recommended and I’ve heard plenty of people have gotten pregnant with this method, I never did though. First month we started trying I got pregnant at 32.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 11/04/2025 15:08

Becoming pregnant on contraception isn't that easy, even if imperfectly taken.

Only a finite number of our eggs are actually viable for pregnancy, but that doesn't stop them getting released. Contraception failures usually need to be pretty pronounced to prevent ovulation (as in multiple missed pills), and then the egg has to be a viable one, and the sex has to be at the right time for fertilisation AND the man concerned has to be fertile/reasonably compatible.

Mandylovescandy · 11/04/2025 15:11

StrongLazyVague · 11/04/2025 12:16

I wouldn't worry. I had regular sex from the age of eighteen, using condoms (hormonal contraception never worked well for me), without any pregnancies or pregnancy scares, and I conceived the first month of trying aged 39.

Pretty much exactly the same for me

butterflycr · 11/04/2025 15:13

So.... you're worried because you've never been pregnant despite the fact that you've been taking contraception for most of your adult life to stop you from getting pregnant?

MsCactus · 11/04/2025 15:32

I never got on with hormonal contraception so always used condoms, never got pregnant - had one or two slip ups and used the morning after pill. Had sex without protection a few times in my 20s on my period (which, because I have long cycles, basically a zero/tiny chance of pregnancy).

Since TTC I've conceived two pregnancies fairly easily (within 3 months of trying, in my 30s). I actually think it's quite hard to get pregnant - you have to be ovulating, egg has to meet sperm at the right time etc. I don't think anything you've said sounds like you're infertile!

Worth saying that I know a lot of my friends under 35 who have taken a year or so to get pregnant while TTC - and that's been considered quite normal. So I do think getting pregnant from the odd time without contraception is probably rare (though obviously does happen)

BabyRuthless · 11/04/2025 15:35

Until I started TTC my son I had been on either the mini pill or implant since I was 19 - now 34. I had sometimes missed a pill or my implant had been in longer than the guaranteed safe time. Fell first try with my son! I fell pregnant again recently but had a loss. This was 3rd cycle trying.

Differentstarts · 11/04/2025 15:37

Both times I got pregnant where through my own stupidity birth control is very effective when used correctly

User46576 · 11/04/2025 12:18

Same (except 38 rather than 39)

Same. Used the pill, condoms and lastly Persona from 17-35. Got pregnant first time trying age 35.

JHound · 11/04/2025 16:01

I have never been pregnant.

I also have many female friends who were never pregnant until their planned pregnancies.

I had never been pregnant until I started trying (I was in my early/mid thirties and had several partners since I was 16, I’d been on the pill/depo/Mirena the whole time).
Within 2 months of having the Mirena coil out and TTC I was pregnant with my eldest, and I was pregnant with my youngest 15 months after he was born (first month TTC).

Contraception is pretty effective for most people (and you’re actually not fertile for more than 5-6 days per cycle, so even if you miss a pill or don’t use a condom there’s a fairly good chance you’ll just miss your fertile window anyway).
Not having been pregnant if you’ve been using the pill/depo isn’t a reliable indicator of your fertility.
