The housewife capital of the UK

Outdated article I know, but a Daily Mail article from 2012 listed Tandridge in Surrey as the “housewife capital of the UK”, with over 1/3 of the population falling into this category apparently. Do any of you know areas near you or areas you are aware of that have a high volume of housewives/SAHMs to the point where it is noticeably much more common than normal?

There’s a huge age factor here.

I’m in my thirties and I don’t know ANY housewives in my friendship circles. Everyone works 3-4 days a week.

The only women I know who don’t work are in minimum their 50s - but even then, more typically a generation older than that again.

I’m quite surprised Surrey was the capital, as my observation would be in the South women are far more likely to be working (and working full time) due to the high cost of living.

Same. Actually, I really can't think of anyone. Even the school friends I had who are now just FB friends - they all work. The handful of female neighbours I know. As do all the mums I can think of from ds3's class (he's 7).

My eldest is 19. I was a SAHM for a few years while my DC were little (went back to work when they started school) and it was quite common then. I think it's much less common now, so I expect that article from 13 years ago may be very out of date.

Yes, I’m a SAHM/housewife here in Cambridge and there are loads of others by choice on my school run.

Interestingly though, despite this being a very expensive area to live, none of us are married to rich men. My DH is a classroom teacher. Many of the others DH’s are actually in the more manual trades, e.g. mechanic, construction, etc.

I’m in the east of England, just in my 30s and know lots of housewives. It’s probably 50:50 at my kids’ school.

Those that do work tend to have quite serious / big jobs. I’ve been a SAHM and now work, and my experience is that for others it also isn’t static, woman start and stop working as their family demands change.
