For taking a sick day because I sliced off part of my fingertip

Spent a few hours in A&E this morning. Could have worked in the afternoon but my mind was frazzled. I could tell my boss wasn't happy...

Also has this happened to anyone else? How well did your finger heal up? Did it grow back??

Doesn’t matter if your boss was happy or not, at the end of the day, health comes before business, especially if it’s someone else’s business and not even your own.

You were clearly injured and not with it, regardless of what your boss thought. You are the person best placed to know if you are able to work. I rang in recently to say I was exhausted and broken and would be in when I had slept properly - my manager supported this completely.

Re the finger tip, I've cut a few of these off (cack handed and inattentive...). I've never got medical treatment when I have, but they've always healed well. I've only ever done the pad/tip (I'd definitely get help if bone was involved!). It takes about a month to fully heal with no professional help, so you might be quicker, hopefully!

What did A and E do, out of interest? I apply a lot of pressure, clean well, bandage with a bit of padding and slap a finger bandage on top to keep everything clean and dry. I have done it 3 times - twice with a hatchet doing kindling and once in a coconut based incident. I'll consider A and E next time if they're doing anything special.

Some workplaces/bosses have particular views about sickness.

Unless it's breaching sickness policy thresholds it won't really matter.

If it's your middle finger you could always take a picture and send it to your boss.

Did it grow back or do you have a dented/flat fingertip now?

A&E cleaned it with solution (?) and then put a dressing on top and bandaged it. It was gushing with blood so I thought I'd better head down. Also I wanted to see if they could reattach it. I still had the cut off bit but no, they don't do that.

Thanks! This is what I need to hear!

I think I might have a girly crush on you for your sheer brilliance!

It looks flat for a while, but they rounded back out with time. About a year maybe? I've not done it for a number of years now and all my fingers look normal!

OK keeping my (injured) fingers crossed!
