Why is a jockey who rides a horse to death not charged with animal cruelty?

Just that really.

Whipping an animal until it collapses with exhaustion, witnessed by millions. But it’s ok because the people who own racehorses are rich & influential.

The same reason people who kill pigs and cows and sheep in a slaughterhouse aren't charged with animal abuse.

As a society we've decided which nonhuman animals are worthy of a level of respect and care (see: dogs, cats, on whom many owners will spend thousands to ensure they have a quality of life) and which nonhuman animals are literally worthless objects (see: fish, cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, geese, ducks, many others).

Our country and the world is built on animal abuse and exploitation. This is only shocking because it's visible.

faerietales · 08/04/2025 15:05

Because horse-racing is a multi-million pound industry, sadly. And money talks.

It's barbaric and should be banned.

Luddite26 · 08/04/2025 15:05

Excellent question.
And media like the BBC laugh and talk about the racing as though it's wonderful overlooking these cruel deaths.
YANBU. But they are.

caringcarer · 08/04/2025 15:05

All he got was 4 days suspension. The horse gave all it had and jockey should have pulled up sooner. He should have got a very large fine to prevent him doing it again.

SirDanielBrackley · 08/04/2025 15:06

Don't ask us. Ask the RSPCA.

I’m not disagreeing with you, but surely even people who eat animals must see something wrong with cruelty as entertainment.

The problem is he crossed a line, even in the world of racing. It’s a risky sport. Some people want to ban it. I’m not one of them. But u agree that the repercussions of mistreatment should be more serious. What he did was not akin to a slaughterhouse. Even though a slaughter house kills animals, it needs to meet welfare standards and can face consequences for breaching them. He should face much much harsher consequences that prevent him from whipping a horse to death ever again.

I don't think they do. It doesn't really matter if it's for entertainment or not. Eating animal products isn't necessary so eating meat/eggs/milk etc. is purely for pleasure too. We need to remember that any person who is happy to fund an industry where humans abuse and ride around on the backs of horses like they're a vehicle rather than a sentient being isn't going to give a toss about their wellbeing.

Every time, there are campaigns around the abuse inherent in horse racing, but most people simply don't care.

Thé horse didnt Die. It collapsed from heat exhaustion. After being hosed down on the course, it walked into the horse box on course on its own four feet. He was rolling around in the field at Phillip Hobbs yesterday morning, perfectly okay, though he will be retired now as he is getting on a bit.

The horse was 13 I think? I know very little about horse racing, but 13 seems pretty old to me for a racehorse.

TheJollyMoose · 08/04/2025 15:40

Oh for goodness sake. Don’t be so dramatic.

edwinbear · 08/04/2025 15:40

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen this one died. No retirement for this one. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/horse-racing/articles/cnv5z81qzrjo

Why is cruelty for food different to cruelty for entertainment?
Neither are necessary. We do not NEED sausages or horse racing- people just like them. Both are to satisfy personal choices. The end result makes no difference to the animal.
I eat organic meat and ride horses. I would not eat meat from a cheap supermarket because I suspect the animal had had an unacceptable life and death.
However many people eat meat from Asda but call horse racing an awful cruelty !

So why the difference ?

Race horse Celebre d'Allen dies after collapsing during Grand National

The 13-year-old horse died on Tuesday after his condition deteriorated. Jockey Micheal Nolan, who rode him in the race at Aintree, has been given a 10-day suspension.

Hé was actually given TEN days suspension, more than twice your statement.

Ok my mistake 10 days is not a lot either. A huge huge fine might make him think twice.

Anotherparkingthread · 08/04/2025 16:17

This looks off, horses that fit having had that much training don't generally collapse for no apparent reason. The horse will a separate medical condition/medical event.

My friend sold a gypsy cob, it was 10 years old. About a week later ahe got a call from the new owner and the perfectly healthy horse had dropped dead in the field after being moved, the vet was called and seemed to think she had had a cardiac event (a heart attack basically). Perhaps induced by the move and stress but suggested it would have been an underlying condition and could have happened at any point.

Shoxfordian · 08/04/2025 16:21

Even eating organic meat accepts animals dying for your culinary enjoyment. I eat meat too btw, just don't think organic makes you any more ethical

YOU check YOUR facts - he has since died.

TallulahBetty · 08/04/2025 16:23

The 10 days' suspension is pathetic. They clearly acknowledge he has done something wrong, so why the ridiculously lenient punishment?

Not really, not for a steeplechaser. It's flat racers that are young as they tend to start at 2.

In what way is it hyperbole?

The horse died unnecessarily. The jockey was found to have committed misconduct & was given a ridiculously lenient punishment.
