Kent seaside moving

Eusabio1980 · 07/04/2025 14:05

Hi all,

I live in Lordswood, Kent with my family and would like to love nearer the cost.
We are quite a chilled family so not looking for a Croydon by the sea. Also need a good secondary school for my son.

Would really appreciate some honest recommendations.

Thanks
😀

No not Herne Bay if you DON’T want Croydon. Broadstairs.

Hythe , Dymchurch New Romney are lovely areas with schools

TBH I don't really understand the 'Croydon' bit. Just shows how you can't ask anyone's opinion for things like this - I think Hythe, Dymchurch and Romney are dreadful. You're not far away so you'd be best to drive around the coast and check out for yourself. Broadstairs is much nicer than HB but the reason I suggested it is you're more likely to be able to access the Canterbury grammar schools

Thanks.
In regards to the Croydon comment, I'm not keen on moving where lads and lasses spend the weekends drunk and high on the beach. No offence but I'm a little too old for that. Tankerton seems nice

My folks live in Herne Bay. Although they do like living there, they say it's quite unpleasant during the summer holidays. Personally I would love to live in Seasalter, preferably right on the coast!

You will only get a good school for your son if he is good for grammar or you pay. If you pay, Kings Canterbury is OK academically but used to be pretty poor for sport.

I'd go for somewhere quieter but with good links to Canterbury. I'd only contemplate Birchington of the Thanet Towns. Agree vis Tankerton. Possibly Deal. Sandgate? There are more options if you go inland a bit. Chilham/Wickhambreux/Faversham, etc.

Katemax82 · 08/04/2025 07:35

Hythe is very nice

You'll get a lot more teenage beach parties in Broadstairs. Tankerton is very nice- but expensive.

If you want a sandy beach then you will be restricted to Thanet, in Kent. Minnis Bay (Birchington) is lovely but all the Thanet areas are full of DFLs so are getting expensive.
There are lots of beaches so the beach parties tend not to be on the main beaches and from Cliftonville to Ramsgate the cliffs prevent the sound travelling.
if you want a very quiet life then consider the Palm Bay and Kingsgate areas.
If you need easy access to the station then these areas are not suitable.

Deal is lovely. Grammar School area though.

Birchington to Reculver has terrible issues with seaweed rotting on the beaches all summer and sewage releases. Canterbury Grammars are not as good as Broadstairs and most others in the South East, so choose wisely if that is the aim or you may as well settle in a cheaper non-grammar area and get a better achieving school.
