AIBU to want to boast

I'm so excited but I can't say in real life as its boasting. I'm 44 and I've made the final payment on my house. At 18 I was living in the YMCA, now DH and I own our house. It's a huge relief.

You have every right to be proud but don't boast in the presence of anyone worse off than you/ still struggling.

🙄 obviously she knows this which is why she’s sharing it here in a safe place, doesn’t need condescending stupid comments, well done op

Devilsmommy · 07/04/2025 10:50

I don't think yabu at all. Fair play to you for getting it done, especially after where you started from. You've every right to be super proud 😁

JHound · 07/04/2025 10:51

You should boast - this is great stuff! I am your age and yet to even get on the housing ladder but still love to hear good news stories like this. Such a weight off your shoulder and also frees up some income each month.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 07/04/2025 10:52

Are you saying it wasn't fun to stay at the YMCA?

Depends really.

You and OH worked hard to pay it off, boast away.
My husbands dad gave us £250k as a gift, which we used to pay it off, maybe keep to self.

Oldandcobwebby · 07/04/2025 10:53

That's brilliant! Isn't it a glorious feeling?

Now cut up your credit cards and get any car loans paid off!

Aparecium · 07/04/2025 10:56

I love an honest boast on Mumsnet 😀

Well done. Definitely an achievement to be proud of.

mintgreensoftlilac · 07/04/2025 10:57

What an amazing achievement! Well done you it sounds like it took an enormous amount of hard work and you have every right to boast!

Bit over the top. Hope you're having an ok morning.

Obviously she's doing it here instead. That was just in case a raft of comments appeared encouraging shouting it to all and sundry rather than selectively. Latter in person fine in my view. To be openly proud to appropriate people.

🤣🤣🤣

Bighouseinthecountry25 · 07/04/2025 11:01

It's interesting at the YMCA, they were there when I needed a bed to finish my a levels, but was glad to leave.
No car payments and credit card paid monthly. I owe nobody anything!

Fucking smashed it! 😀 what a great position to be in. I’m happy for you

CoastalCalm · 07/04/2025 11:18

Brilliant !

stayathomer · 07/04/2025 11:19

Congratulations op!!!🥳🎉

expat321 · 07/04/2025 11:19

How much was the house?

Authorperson · 07/04/2025 11:20

Yes! Amazing work. Good idea not to boast in real life. I have someone in my life who used to be a friend and I had to downgrade her to acquaintance as she kept banging on about the fact she paid hers off. So tone deaf! If I'd managed it I would boast in here though

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 07/04/2025 11:20

Well done, OP!

Bighouseinthecountry25 · 07/04/2025 11:24

So 20 years ago dh and I bought a house for 205 and over paid like crazy, 9years later we sold for 305 and bought new house for 380 which we've over paid all the time interest rates were low. When we bought new house we didn't take more money, we used savings to bridge the gap. Holidays mostly in UK, cars always old but we've done it

Congratulations! I think it's quite depressing that most people expect to be about 60 before they're mortgage free. It's such a millstone.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 07/04/2025 11:27

It’s an amazing feeling isn’t it. We were able to do this due to an inheritance I received.

We have never since then used a credit card or overdraft (If we even have one).

Ha ha! I wish that would be me. At 44 and yet to get on the housing ladder I reckon it will be 70 before I am mortage free.

Why not? It might inspire them to better themselves.

Was debating how to word that, but you've done it perfectly!!

Don't be daft, it's just wildly insensitive
