I am just concerned that sterilising won't be enough is it better to just get another dummy?

It’ll be fine.

PlanetOtter · 06/04/2025 20:35

Don’t be silly! Does your DH not kiss your baby?

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/04/2025 20:36

Seriously

Zeitumschaltung · 06/04/2025 20:36

I would also be concerned, particularly about tooth decay, but I would think sterilising should be enough.

TonTonMacoute · 06/04/2025 20:36

🤦‍♀️

Unclench, unless you are intending to raise your child in a sterile bubble.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 06/04/2025 20:36

I understand why, especially if you're a new mum, but I used to clean off a dummy in my own mouth if it had dropped out of the car seat, or out of the pram etc

I really wouldn't advise buying a new dummy every time something not sterile touches it...

CountFucula · 06/04/2025 20:36

That would be disproportionate. Are you feeling anxious? I was -with my first baby especially -and would have worried about things like this more. But it is fine. Really.

onestepfurtheragain · 06/04/2025 20:36

If a dummy fell on the floor, my sister would suck it to clean it before giving it back to her son! Each to their own…

I did that for both of mine!

purpleme12 · 06/04/2025 20:37

Well of course if you sterilise it it'll be fine

Tbrh · 06/04/2025 20:38

Wash it??

Coughcoughcoughallthetime · 06/04/2025 20:38

Sterilising will be fine.
Why don't you buy your H a dummy of his own though so he doesn't have to borrow the babies.

Screamingabdabz · 06/04/2025 20:39

It will be absolutely fine. Generations of parents ‘cleaned’ their children’s dummies like that. It didn’t start a plague.

TheOccupier · 06/04/2025 20:41

First baby, OP? 😂

YABU to worry about germs, YWNBU to worry that your husband has an adult baby fetish.

JoyousEagle · 06/04/2025 20:42

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t think sterilising would be fine? You will wash much dirtier things (anything that’s had raw meat on it for example), and then it’s fine to use without giving you food poisoning! Why would the dummy not be clean?

Byebyechicken · 06/04/2025 20:43

I was the parent who popped the dropped dummy in my mouth to 'clean' it but I wouldn't do that now.
I heard somewhere that there is higher risk of dental cavities when people's saliva gets into babies mouths.

Doolallies · 06/04/2025 20:45

Kindly op I think you might have a bit of anxiety

I tried sucking on my kids dummies because I vaguely remember having one and being very attached.

It wasn't a fetish, just curiosity and nostalgia. I found one very recently having a clear out, both kids had a go and found it hilarious.

Anyway, germs from parents shouldn't be an issue unless they are actually ill. Children are half ours so half our DNA. A suck of a dummy from a healthy parent is not going to maim a child even if it's not sterilised.

Sanch1 · 06/04/2025 21:31

Don’t be ridiculous. It’s fine.

Fancycheese · 06/04/2025 21:33

I’ve actually read this improves the baby’s microbiome! The more you know.

HuffleMyPuffle · 06/04/2025 21:33

Unless he actually tried it up his arse or in the dog's mouth it'll be fine

Magnastorm · 06/04/2025 21:35

I mean, if you think that dh is harbouring some sort of super germ that sterilisation will not kill then you probably need to pack him off to a lab for testing.

Emmacb82 · 06/04/2025 21:37

It’s fine to use after sterilising! The amount of people that pick dummies up off the floor and put them in their mouths to ‘clean’ them is just grim. The human mouth is about as disgusting as it gets! But all those babies seem to do alright, it’s no different to babies picking up stuff from the floor and eating it 🤷🏼‍♀️

OhCalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 06/04/2025 21:37

Do you disinfectant your nipples before breastfeeding? You should do really. Can't be too sure about germs eh? 🙄

PumpkinScarf · 06/04/2025 21:38

What a strange thing to do! Sterilising will be fine though no need for a new one! On a side note, all the posters normalising ‘cleaning’ a dummy with your own mouth are revolting.
