There’s a correct way to slice onions

BreathesOutSlowly · 06/04/2025 19:40

DH helping with supper. I asked him to peel and slice x4 onions. He chopped them. He was two onions in before I pointed out that chopping wasn’t slicing and so I asked him to slice a couple more.

He stomped off. I know IANBU in thinking he is a middle aged man child but what I am more interested in understanding is if IABU in requesting new onions be sliced.

To avoid any sort of drip feed:
I went on to fry the sliced onions to add to sausages in buns.

The chopped onions are in the freezer.

The sausages were high welfare and delicious.

We’ve been married 20 years+
Sunday is a non drinking day.
My favourite colour is orange.

What difference does it make?

CherieBabySpliffUp · 06/04/2025 19:43

It sounds like he misheard you or had a brain fart. Stomping off seems like an overreaction on his part.

kittenkipping · 06/04/2025 20:18

Weaponised incompetence?

BoredZelda · 06/04/2025 20:28

My mum and dad do this stuff. She’ll say “I just pointed out….” When what she has actually done is snapped at him. He gets annoyed and he’s the one who is being unreasonable.

The onions were fine to be chopped for frying, they didn’t need to be sliced.

Hoppinggreen · 06/04/2025 20:31

They did need to be sliced, if you had wanted them diced you would have said diced
However, some people use the word interchangeably

Gretnaglebe · 06/04/2025 20:32

YABU to use anything except for pre chopped frozen onions. Godsend

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 06/04/2025 20:33

Did it matter that the onions were cut into smaller pieces before frying instead of in people's mouths when eating?
Ultimately it wouldn't have changed the flavour.

I wonder if you'd just pointed out that you'd like 'the next two sliced please' would he still have stormed off? Was it the fact that you asked him to do two more, like making him do lines at school?!

Were you just annoyed that he hadn't followed your instructions in the first place?

I nearly always chop so I could easily have autopiloted and just chopped. Would it affect the meal?

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 06/04/2025 20:33

I don't think I would know what you're asking for.

ExtraOnions · 06/04/2025 20:35

Does it matter … they taste exactly the same.

Micromanaging how someone chops an onion 🙄🙄

Hoppinggreen · 06/04/2025 20:37

I don't agree
I no longer eat hotdogs but when I did they were best with slies onions cooked slowly and slightly caramelised, diced wouldn't work the same

soupyspoon · 06/04/2025 20:37

Im with you OP, ignore these others

And yes, sliced onions do taste different to chopped, any good cook/chef knows this

This morning I said to OH, leave the washing baskets upstairs, dont bring the washing down

What do you think he then did?

Panterusblackish · 06/04/2025 20:39

Obviously they should have been thinly sliced to go on a sandwich.

Diced chunks don't work in a sausage butty.

CoastalCalm · 06/04/2025 20:44

I agree with the OP thin slices of onion wouldn’t fall off the sausage , chunks would

It even makes a difference which direction you slice them

Tagyoureit · 06/04/2025 20:57

Yep there's a difference.

Diced up
Long slice
Short slice

I don't know why or how each one makes a difference to the dish being cooked/prepared but I do know my preference and that's that.

Italian tomato based dish - diced
Salad - long sliced
Curry - short sliced
Hot dogs - long sliced
Burgers - cut in rounds if raw
Cheese and onion sandwich - raw, cut in rounds.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 06/04/2025 21:39

My DP did this last week. I think they just think 'cut up some onions'.

gingercat02 · 06/04/2025 22:30

No vote! Disappointed OP
Yes chopped is different from sliced and yes it matters

BreathesOutSlowly · 06/04/2025 22:50

Sorry I am on the app and can’t work out how to do the voting.

To my mind, "chopped" is a general term that could mean sliced, diced etc. But sliced is specific and means, well, cut in slices. 😂

minnienono · 06/04/2025 22:58

Chopped is chunky but sort of squares, sliced is thick or thin slices (clue in the name) diced is same as chopped unless preceded by finely which means very small squares and minced in finer still. I have given my dh these written down to save confusion along with my carrot grading system Grin

softlyfallsthesnow · 06/04/2025 23:02

Think yourself lucky someone else was doing it. I hate peeling/ chopping / slicing / dicing onions. And I've done an awful lot of them! I don't blame him for leaving you to it.

ouch321 · 06/04/2025 23:06

Fuss over nothing.

PickledElectricity · 06/04/2025 23:09

YANBU, there's a difference.

Sometimes you have a brain fart though.

Once I was away with work and a colleague had a broken leg. She asked me to get her breakfast from the buffet, listed a bunch of things including "scrambled eggs". I brought fried eggs because that's what my brain had processed. I was also severely hungover so that might have had something to do with it.

CarpetSlipper · 07/04/2025 06:14

YABU. Do you pick fault with everything he does?
