Peleton - genius or waste of time and money?

Any opinions one way or the other?

In my head, it’s more accessible, more straightforward to jump on and do a quick session.

Hoping husband and tweenager might also use it if it’s there and shiny and fun….

But it may also end up an expensive coat hanger. I’ve heard more negative in real life than good (people buying and not using), but I have been for a demo and really like it so I almost want to be convinced that I’m just getting the experiences of a disproportionate minority.

If you have one, do you like it/do you use it? I enjoy spinning and am a regular gym goer so already fit and active if that makes a difference.

I’d do some research about them before investing. They’ve had loads of problems. Massive drop off in customers. Mass layoffs. Lost loads of their trainers.
they were very lucky in that Covid came about at a perfect time for them and the busyness exploded. The inevitable crash came. I am not sure how they are going now. But I wouldn’t buy without checking

luna2025 · 06/04/2025 14:02

I love it. Easy to finish work at home and just do a quick class
the weights classes are good, the power zone programmes great for fitness (also the FB power zone group does challenges) and I do the stretch classes too
I always enjoyed spin classes and I love being able to do them at home

I had the bike and loved it. Got the treadmill and loved it more so sold my bike. I use the treadmill most days. Great range of classes available - not just bike/treadmill but strength, pilates, yoga etc

Jaessa · 06/04/2025 14:04

Waste of money. Literally can achieve the exact same results with any generic cardio machine in the market

Gundogday · 06/04/2025 14:05

My ds uses it all the time, including doing the challenges etc. it’s not cheap though.

B0bbingalong · 06/04/2025 14:05

I also love it, easy and accessible. Their content is superb and that's probably been the most eye opening bit - I use strength, stretching, mobility, outdoor runs and rides

HeyItsPickleRick · 06/04/2025 14:06

I love it, use it every day and so does my husband. Have several colleagues who use it and it’s fun to chat about. I’ve never ever stuck to anything this long - tried and given up running, CrossFit, various classes - Peloton gave me my first ever set of visible abs at age 33 and I’m obsessed! I got the peloton+ and do the weights/strength classes and then normal cycling.

This I definitely disagree with - I had a cheaper spin bike in Covid and it was awful. As a spin bike, I really like it. I’m more curious as to whether people to stick to it or the novelty wears off if that makes sense.

In what sense should I potentially be worried? From a warranty perspective?

I love it. Do around three cycles (45 mins each) and two strength classes a week. Also use stretch classes and meditation. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Absolutely worth it to me. I like that I can do training programmed or freestyle. Hundreds of different classes to choose from. Don't have to travel to a gym. Only exercise I've ever kept up for years now.

lilydragon · 06/04/2025 19:13

I’ve had the bike since Covid and I love it, I still use it 3-4 times a week plus do some of the strength/ yoga classes. Definitely worth the money in my opinion. I was sceptical as I hate the bike machines at the gym but I was desperate during covid, and it’s so much better than a normal stationary bike.

Not even close. I’d argue that the best part about peloton is the content.

Yes you can use a non-peloton bike but the classes are the thing that make me keep using mine.

We’ve had our bike for 4 years and I use it consistently and have added strength classes which I would not have done if I’d just bought a standard bike.

Have you got one? In my experience Peloton is brilliant, the machines, the classes and the instructors are fantastic.

I’ve found that the people who are negative about it haven’t had / got one but I’m happy to be contradicted.

Aslanwasright · 06/04/2025 19:57

I love it too - cycling around 200 miles a month and lots of strength training and yoga. Would never be able to do the same if I had to rely on a gym etc. There's also some really good online groups with challenges that keep me extra motivated. Please don't take advice from anyone that doesn't have one as you just can't know.

I think they've lost two instructors in the past year or so out of 70 odd, don't let that put you off!

Jemimapuddleduk · 06/04/2025 19:59

We love ours, we got it in 2029 during lock down when gyms closed and still use it now. I do around 5 classes a week (mid of strength and bike 3x/2x) and dh around 4 times a week. Well worth the money.

Yes, I did try it. It works. But also curating a playlist on spotify and run my own HIIT programmes on any cardio equipment worked as well. If you need external motivation amd don't have access to classes irl, go for it. But if you know how to stay disciplined, then it's a waste of money. Plus it's useless for whole body strength, so I prefer spending my money on either a good gym or at home equipment that includes a power rack

Jemimapuddleduk · 06/04/2025 20:01

In 2020!!! Not 2029

Avacadoandtoast · 06/04/2025 20:01

I love it! We had an issue with the screen and they replaced it immediately, couldn’t fault the service and love the classes. As people have said above I really like the spin, strength and stretching.

Mirren22 · 06/04/2025 20:02

There’s no way I would work as hard on a Peleton as I do when I’m a spin class with others

MrsPeterHarris · 06/04/2025 20:47

We’ve had ours 2 1/2 years now & still love it. I use the bike every day and also do strength & stretching classes. It’s the most consistent I’ve ever been with exercise. Love the platform & the instructors are great.

SpecialToMe · 06/04/2025 20:53

had mine a year and love it! Try to use it about 4x a week. Strength and bike classes. I like the Pilates classes too. I got a guide in the sale and use that sometimes to check my form

i I also use the app frequently when I travel to either use a walking class on the treadmill in a hotel gym or weights stuff etc

I like doing live classes too sometimes as that’s extra motivation and uk ladies peloton is a lovely community

Tiredb · 06/04/2025 20:55

We have both the bike and the tread. Both my Husband and I use it daily. We also do the strength, yoga and meditation classes.

In 4 years we've both done around 1500 classes each and it is the best mental health release I've ever found.

Currently I'm 26 weeks pregnant and completely credit it with being able to keep moving with minimal pain and barely having put on a pound.

It's the best investment in ourselves we've ever made. I'd encourage you to do it.

TerroristToddler · 06/04/2025 20:57

Got my bike a year ago - still love it. And it’s the only thing I’ve stuck to for such a long time. I have a generic old treadmill too but have long been eyeing up the peloton tread to replace it, but the price tag is just soooo expensive!

Keepsmiling2948 · 06/04/2025 21:04

Absolutely love it and intend on getting the treadmill. I work far harder on a 30 minute peloton class than I would an hour aimlessly on cardio equipment. I can do a class while my toddler naps. There’s structure and a plan to follow (I also didn’t believe I was a competitive person until my name was on a leaderboard!)

As with any exercise though I do think sticking with it is a bit of a personal thing. If you enjoy exercising it’s much easier to have the motivation to do more. There are some instructors and classes I’m not too keen on but others I really look forward to doing.

I’ve 2 stone and toned up since eating well and doing classes 4 times a week.

pinklimefish · 06/04/2025 21:08

I got one in lockdown, and sold it about a month ago. My kids are both in school now, and I’m back at the gym so I started using it less. When it was lockdown, through maternity, trying to fit in exercise around very young kids it was a godsend. I used it tonnes (got a bit addicted with my streak!!!) and I still love the classes. It was a bit of a reluctant sale but came down to me being back at the gym now, and not wanting to spend gym membership and peloton membership every month.
