Alternative to Shein?

Ridelikethewindypops · 06/04/2025 08:07

I know fast fashion is bad for the planet, but is there any ethical/ not trashy online alternative to Shein? We live very rurally and struggle to find shops suitable for 15yr old dd going to teen discos. Any suggestions?

There's a woman in my road who bins entire bags of Shein clothes regularly. Presumably they weren't what she thought and returning them was too much hassle

Everysand · 06/04/2025 18:13

I wouldn't buy secondhand unless I could see it, you can't return easily to places like Vinted, I wouldn't buy from Shein either though. Don't people use Primark anymore as you can see what you are buying there

Returning to Shein is easy. I ordered some tops and when I returned them the credit was issued within a couple of days. Such a waste to just throw them out.

How do you know, does she have a label on it or a placard

This just shows how little you know about government. It's pretty hard to just ban things without support of the people and unfortunately we are overrun with people like you who don't give a shit.

If no one bought shein, they wouldn't be destroying the planet with their cheap plastic. You might not be able to be the solution but you can choose not to en part of the problem.

And if you don't care about the planets you must care about the slaves who make your clothes? Or is that ok because they are far away?

It's that kind of hectoring lecturing attitude that makes people like me dismiss people like you.

How perfect you must be in every single aspect of your life. I don't envy you that, as the only way is down.

Absolutely

Holier than Thou type.

Screamingabdabz · 06/04/2025 18:28

H&M have anti-slavery ethical policies on their website.

grumpypedestrian · 06/04/2025 18:30

Wow. The nastiness towards people not wanting to buy from companies using slave labour. Defensive much?

Returns process being more important than working conditions is no longer shocking me.

Ethical brands being more expensive isn’t an excuse. I’m on minimum wage, I just buy less, save up, buy better.

Dread to think what Shein users would think of the slave trade. Because that’s what you’re funding.

vandelle · 06/04/2025 18:37

Well Shein won't make much in the USA now that the Marmalade Moron has put 34% tariffs on Chinese imports. That's good isn't it?

How would you even know this? Do you rifle through her bins?

No, she leaves them in plastic bags next to the communal bins, spilling out all over the place.

Good for you. You do realise that not everyone is in a position to do that?

SnoozingFox · 06/04/2025 19:04

So depressing that not supporting possibly the most unethical fashion company on the planet, which uses children and slaves, rips off individual designers and small traders, and which creates more plastic waste than you can shake a stick at is "holier than thou".

That is an exceptionally low bar to set.

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 06/04/2025 19:05

Everyone is in the position to organise a clothes swap or buy second hand, for cheaper than Shein

Shein returns go straight to landfill. Utterly revolting company.

What part of minimum wage did you miss? Admittedly I have a limited wardrobe and rarely buy clothes as I can’t afford to.

How do Shein buyers feel about abolishment of slavery? Or is it just ok because you don’t see it being your screen.

H&M have anti-slavery ethical policies on their website.

Of course they do. All the high street brands do CSR PR, green washing etc. But there's plenty of undercover reporters who go into the factories in remote Chinese cities and expose what's actually going on on the ground. If you really are bothered about this you need to dig deeper than the PR they put out themselves ..that's not for H&M especially, most are similar and will claim ignorance if "caught".:

H&M maybe

I didn't miss it but just because you can afford to save for clothes doesn't mean everyone else can. I'm going to need a whole new wardrobe if I get a job and it'll be coming from somewhere I can afford.

Of course slavery isn't ok but if people need clothes they are going to buy what they can afford which in most cases isn't going to be ethical unfortunately.

vandelle · 06/04/2025 19:15

I don't trust any of them to actually have the green credentials they profess to have.

I remember well that one of the reasons Covid was rampant in Northern Italy at first (remember that), was because there was a huge Chinese contingent who worked in "high fashion" in Milan. When they returned from visiting China for their New Year, they brought Covid back with them.

So why not use indigenous people in these oh so ethical high fashion factories?

I'm not convinced about any of them. Money talks and bullshit walks for all of them IMV.

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 06/04/2025 19:18

Vinted is on a par with or cheaper than Shein, for better quality and less environmental damage. Why not use that for your new wardrobe?

That would be fine if companies made clothes to a standard size! Personally I want to order several sizes (I seem to be anything from a 16-20), try them on and return what I don't like or doesn't fit. I can't afford to risk being lumbered with clothes that don't fit.

My clothes used to be generally Next, Roman and Wallis, despite what it comes across like on here I don't actually have anything from Shein!

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 06/04/2025 19:24

Why not just order Next stuff on Vinted then? Shein is shit on sizing too according to the other thread.

Nevermindthebuzzard · 06/04/2025 19:29

When they get back to shein, they go in the bin there.

It's cheaper to throw them in landfill than it is to remerchandise so they throw it away.

Not just shein. Most retailers do this. So you ordering multiple sizes and sending back what you don't like - a lot of that will be going in the bin.

grumpypedestrian · 06/04/2025 19:41

When did exploiting people become better than just trying on clothes? I get full time jobs, but if you’re whole ‘thing’ is clothes just go to fitting rooms.

Talk to shop staff. They’ll help you with budget and style, stylist appointments are normally free.
